Our online guide can be used by absolutely anyone from any field who needs to write a business case.

Business people at a meeting

To ensure budget for your service, you may need to put together a business case.

Who can use this tool?

This online guide can be used by absolutely anyone from any field who needs to write a business case. Although the helpful statistics and evidence we provide is tailored to support cardiac healthcare, our suggested step-by-step process can be applied to the writing of any business case, no matter the context of your proposal.

What is a business case?

A business case is a detailed written proposal for the creation of a new service, the development of an existing service or to secure the ongoing provision of a current service. It will go to a decision-making body so it needs to clearly present all the evidence required for that body to make an informed decision.

It will be read by key decision-makers, including the doctors, nurses and other health and social care professionals who make up the Clinical Commissioning Groups. It may also be read by a local health and wellbeing board, consisting of representatives from community organisations and members of the general public, and local authorities.

Why you need a business case

Limited budgets mean there could be competition between similar services in the same area. So all service providers now need to make a clear, detailed business case to ensure the future of their service. Without this, even those providing good, evidence-based practice may cease to exist or lose the potential to develop and expand. That’s why we've created this Business case toolkit.
