How do silage inoculants affect animal performance?

Inoculants are silage additives with a main ingredient of lactic acid bacteria. These bacteria ferment sugars in the crop and help to preserve it.

“Adding lactic acid bacteria helps ensure the fermentation goes the direction we want it to go,” said Richard E. Muck at the Midwest Forage Symposium earlier this year.

New silage production handbook released

If you've attended any spring conventions this year, you may have received a copy of a new silage production manual. The 100-plus-page booklet was produced by DuPont Pioneer and released this spring.

Dairy worker safety and health: Tractor safety on dairy farms

The leading cause of death for farmworkers between 1992 and 2009 was tractor overturns, accounting for more than 90 deaths annually. A roll bar or roll-over protective structure and seat belt usage could have prevented these deaths.

However, in 2006 only 59 percent of tractors used on farms in the U.S. were equipped with these devices. Other tractor-related fatalities involve falls, run-overs, crushes and PTO entanglement.
