Study on genomic markers might help reverse low fertility in lactating dairy cows

Technologies used in genetic studies have undergone major advances in recent decades. Decoding of the human genome took approximately 10 years and cost around $3 billion.

Similar technology is now available for a tiny fraction of that value, and it is routinely used in genetic selection programs in all A.I. studs as well as used by dairy producers for genomic selection of females.

The program includes a tour of nearby farms, a two-day agenda packed with the latest research and industry information, and a trade show dedicated to the latest technology in robotic milking and precision management.

It’s almost June. I suppose, since I’m involved in the dairy industry, it should be the most fun month of the year.

Don’t get me wrong – I’ve been known to throw candy at a parade or two, maybe participate in an ice cream social. Mostly, though, I avoid it.
