James Clarke

I'm a writer and a director/scriptwriter/producer.

As ClarkeCreative, I offer producing and directing services for culture and heritage projects. I also provideconsultancy, proposal and bid writing development, for film and education initiatives.

My recent writing work has included commissions from Film Club / National Youth Film Festival, Edusites and the British Council. As a director and producer I have worked with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust on a short film adaptation of The Tempest, featuring young actors from Birmingham, UK.

In 2014 I co-produced and wrote a series of short films about Dylan Thomas for the British Council.

As a screenwriter, I co-wrote the short film Chasing Cotards which premiered at the IMAX in May 2010 before being selected to play at a range of film festivals in the USA and Canada. In 2001, I co-produced the short film Space Dance for British tv. It also played at the Birmingham International Film Festival and in 2002 was longlisted as a BAFTA nominee candidate.

I am the author of Movie Movements: Films That Changed the World of Cinema (Kamera Books) and in 2014, Columbia University Press published my most recent book: Bodies in Heroic Motion: The Cinema of James Cameron. Other books that I have written include The Virgin Film Guide: Animated Films. I have contributed to the Rough Guide to Film (Rough Guides/Penguin) and the Teachers' Animation Toolkit (Continuum Books)

The Guardian, MovieScope, Resurgence, Imagine, 3DWorld and the Times Higher Education magazine have all published my writing.

James has guested on BBC radio and appeared on Channel 4 and Channel 5.
