BATTLE MUSIC.
Out; of the most, vivid descriptions of what it feels like to l>e under lire that have .yet appeared is that given by a young 1' rencii lieutenant in a letter to M. la Jeunetse in the Paris 'Journal.'. "There are many spectacles harder to endure," ho says, "than a fireswept battle-held, winch really is nothing much. The only sensation is that of the ears. The shells seem to belong to a Jlarinetti orchestra, but if you look out you can always avoid them. But the bullets, when you are lying in the tiring line under a warm 6un, 011 the look out for the en«mj — ,how stirring it' is to hear them whistle over your head! There are the machine guns, which make a sonorous web of sound. One would think that their trajectories made a solid mass, vibrating, stretched out, up above there. "And then there are tbe fluke bullets, the stragglers, more imperative. Zip!—and there is a leaf cut off t'oee to you. Then, too, there are the clumsy bullets that bound here and there and. ricochet past you buzzing like great may-flies, and the o.nes that 'fall too short and tap into the ground in front of you with a little cloud of dust — smack. And ail this time you are pigeon shooting. "There, at tbe edge of the wood, to the right of the mill, there are a dozen Bodies creeping out! We've got 'eml 'At 900 yards—fire 1 Too short! You there, raise your back sight. Good ! Now, then, you take the big fellow on the 'horse.' "And so it* goes oil —one hour, two hours; you wait, then you get up, you advance, you run in zigzags to escape the sheila—until the day comes when one of them gets you in your turn. Well, I am only telling you the brighter side of it all —the other side you know already."
