Frac Sand: An Effective Proppant for Hydraulic Fracturing

Frac sand is a special sand used in the process of hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, a process of extracting underground natural gas from shale gas formations. Frac sand is a propppant—a material that helps prop open underground cracks to obtain natural gas during the fracturing process. Proppants are mixed with industrial fluids and water and blasted into a shale gas well at high pressure. The gases obtained as a result include natural gas liquids, natural gas, and petroleum fluids such as oil. North America was the largest consumer of frac sand in the past, in terms of volume, due to the positioning of shale gas as an easily available source for natural gas.

Ottawa White and Brady Brown Sands: The Two Major Types of Frac Sand

Frac sand can be classified into two types namely Ottawa White sand also known as Northern White sand and Brady Brown sand also known as Hickory sand. Brady brown sand contains less amounts of silicon dioxide than Northern White sand, which is found in Midwest. Due to this factor Brady brown sand is the most popular product for the use in wells that are drilled less than 8000 ft. below the surface of the Earth.

Market Overview

Findings of a report available on Radiant Insights, Inc. suggest that the frac sand market would witness a significant growth in the coming years. This growth is credited to the emergence of highly advanced and innovative technologies for oil extraction. A surge in demand for oil products, particularly from emerging regions such as India and China, is also likely to propel the market expansion in the near future. Furthermore, increasing global demand for energy is also projected to help spur the growth of the frac sand market over the coming years.

Leading market players include Preferred Proppants, LLC; Badger Mining Corp.; and U.S. Silica Holdings Inc. Technological innovations and M&A activities are the popular strategies followed to strengthen market position. For example, CIG Logistics LP recently acquired SANDSTORM products from Propell Oilfield Equipment. The acquisition will help CGI to offer comprehensive, end-to-end logistic solutions for gas and oil exploration/production companies, proppant producers, and oilfield service providers.
