Donald Trump Distances Himself From Roger Stone

Donald Trump

First Posted: 02/25/11 06:23 PM Updated: 02/25/11 06:24 PM

Earlier Friday, I wrote about an interesting piece from Maggie Haberman, who spoke to renowned political trickster Roger Stone about the presidential ambitions of Donald Trump. In that article, Stone trashed many of the politicians that Trump would ostensibly be running against, boasting that Trump would be working with a $2 billion war chest -- an insane figure, given that President Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) combined to spend only $1 billion.

Since then, I've received a written statement from Trump:

Recently, Roger Stone has appeared in the news making very favorable statements about me and my potential candidacy for President. While I greatly appreciate his flattering comments, Roger does not represent me and is not an advisor to my potential campaign. I will make a decision sometime prior to June as to whether or not I will run, and am greatly honored by the recent Newsweek poll featured on CNN, and others.

Shortly thereafter, I spoke with Trump himself, who reiterated, "I appreciate the nice things that Roger has been saying about me and my campaign, but he does not represent me and is not advising my campaign at all."

In addition, I'd like to draw your attention to a significant passage from Jeffrey Toobin's 2009 profile of Roger Stone from The New Yorker:

Over the years, Stone's relationships with colleagues and clients have been so combustible that his value as a messenger has been compromised. Stone worked for Donald Trump as an occasional lobbyist and as an adviser when Trump considered running for president in 2000. "Roger is a stone-cold loser," Trump told me. "He always tries taking credit for things he never did."

My guess is that Roger Stone will not be taking a particularly active role in a Trump for President campaign anytime soon.

Mr. Full of himself - with the bad comb over. He knows everything - he's better at everything - and, of course everyone would want him for president. What arrogance!
MMJones   5 minutes ago (9:55 PM)
He has a huge liability with his private and professional life.
But he's a huge bully and everything is about him.

Yep, that qualifies him to be the GOP choice.

The very idea of The Donald running for president, let alone getting elected, is as ridiculous as the idea of that woman from Alaska doing the same.

Oh sure lets put the guy in charge who has literally ran down every business he ever owned. Let's call him the bankrupt king. He'd make a good president since he loves losing other people's money. This had better be a joke.

Roger Stone, the longtime Republican dirty-tricks operative who led the mob that shut down the Miami-Dade County recount and helped make George W. Bush president in 2000 is, apparently, even too much for The Donald though he once worked for him as a lobbyist for his casino business. He also was involved in spats with Eliot Spitzer, threatening him though his elderly father, and reputed to be involved with the prostitution scandal that ultimately brought Spitzer down. A thoroughly despicable character by all accounts.

meg whitman ring a bell with anyone. she wasted, What? 140 million dollars!

let the Trump man waste his billions.

I'm sorry but Donald Trump is too arrogant to run for anything. Running a business doesn't equate to running a country. Plus, he doesn't appear to be very diverse in his hiring practices either. Agree with Obama or not but one thing he's done for this country is open their eyes to diversity.

America is so sick and tired of professional, career politicians that many will pluck anyone out of a crowd and ask him to be president. NOT!

I think trump is the only one that is going to get this oil crisis in check. And in is a crisis. OPEC will destroy the world economy. Not sure why Obama is not talking about this at all. With the middle east we unrest we are about to hit huge gas prices that will collapse not just the us but the world economy. Obama better had figure out what the heck he is going to do and fast!

Does Trump know anything else other than real estate and building things? That alone does not make for a good president. Does he know U.S. History well? Does he know world history well? Does he know that sometimes you need to hold your tongue like Obama did during the Libya uprising until Americans living and visiting there were safely on their way back? Does he know that even though there are some pretty sh*tty world leaders out there, that we need to deal with them the best we can in order to keep peace and that you can't just go around calling people names and expect them to work with you when you need their help? I am not so sure Trump has the intellect it takes to be president. You need to take into account other countries customs and history when you are president. They don't all think like we do. I think Trump's ego is way too big to be a good president. He is used to having his butt kissed all the time. I don't know if he could even fit
it through the White House doors.

He's smarter than Bosh no doubt, but I can't picture the Donald being any less narrow minded.

At least Trump is talking about issues that matter most to the working and middle classes in this country. He is an advocate for taking a firmer hand with the Chinese on their unfair trade practices and their currency manipulations. He also has made numerous statements about the fact that the Big Banksters looted our Treasury at the time to save their own azzez, then turned around and did nothing to ease the credit and foreclosure crisis all the while giving themselves more giant bonuses. At least he has an economic fairness message, more than I can say about most Democrats lately with the exception of Elizabeth Warren.
harriettubman   28 minutes ago (9:31 PM)
Spitzer had a lot of good things to say too but look where he is.
Ailton   18 minutes ago (9:42 PM)
He's also asking the question: can't we even answer the phones anymore? pertaining the all the "service jobs" that went to India.
This guy is on the money and he has the balls to face the chinese and their dirty tricks.
I would go republican in a heart beat if the Donald becomes a candidate.
mandalay007   48 minutes ago (9:11 PM)
once again, I have decided I live under a rock. It is UNfathomable to me that ANYone could seriously consider this guy as a real candidate, and, as ever, I assume he is simply marketing his name and persona again, ala Perez Hilton style (now that I think of it, a similiarity in numerous tacky ways). But then, it is equally unthinkable to me that the Disasta from Alaska could be serious, whadda I know. Back to the comfort of the rock------
MMJones   8 minutes ago (9:51 PM)
I do that back-to-the-rock comfort zone more and more lately.
Unfathomable, unbelievable... and then we get, like you say, something like the pageanteer from AL.
