I am delighted to welcome you to the 17th annual Mouth of the Tyne Festival!

We have a fantastic programme of things to see and do including; live music concerts in the stunning Tynemouth Priory, free international street entertainment, live jazz music, activities for under fives and a pageant featuring hundreds of local school children and community groups. Our coastline provides a wonderful setting for the festival and I know we’ll have many people travelling to the area to enjoy it too. While you’re here, why not visit some of our brilliant local businesses, restaurants, attractions and beaches.

Food and drink

We’ve got some of the region’s best street food for you to try at this year’s festival. Anyone attending the music concerts at Tynemouth Priory and Castle can enjoy food from our independent street food traders.

There’s a fully stocked festival bar with top beers, wine and prosecco ready to go.

Concert attendees can bring their own food and drink in reasonable quantities but no glass is allowed.

STREET ENTERTAINMENT

Timeless: Joli Vyann

Timeless is performed inside and around a spectacular 7-metrehigh rotating hourglass! The four performers use daring acrobatics to explore the fragile relationship between civilisation and nature, climate change and the precarious balance that could at any point tip us into chaos.

The Battling Butlers: Bash Street Company

Life on the road is never straight forward for single dad Joe Butler in this celebration of the everchanging relationship between a father and son who work together in a double-act. The show uses a unique blend of circus skills, original songs, live music and magical illusions and features a real-life father and son!

Zig Zag: Cie Alexandra N' Possee

This French hip hop dance company is directed by choreographer Abdennour Belalit. A bench is the temporary resting place of a homeless father. Another man tries to lift his spirits, using no words but movements that range from tender gestures to explosive virtuosity.

The Owl & The Pussycat: Murmuration Arts

The Owl and The Pussycat are sailing into Tynemouth this summer in their beautiful pea-green boat. Edward Lear's well-loved characters are brought to life in a family show featuring original songs played live on the guitar.

Jumpers For Goalposts: Meta4 Dance Company

Meta4 is a community based contemporary dance company working in rural Northumberland that aims to give opportunities to young people with learning disabilities. The show is a funny, light-hearted look at a dysfunctional football team trying to work together after an injury to their top player.

Free Workshops: Meta4Dance Company

Experience the ultimate fusion of football skills and dance techniques with the Meta4 Dance squad. Discover the fun of warm-up games, technical exercises, and creative tasks, culminating in a chance to showcase your new-found abilities.

Parade - The Giant Wheel: Autin Dance Theatre

ADT returns to Tynemouth with a large-scale travelling performance featuring a 15-foot tall Giant Wheel driven by performers travelling high above the street. Parade is a moving performance inspired by the beauty, power and impact of people coming together from different walks of life.

Victorian Time Travellers: Bell and Bullock

Meet Professor Weft and Miss Warp, two intrepid Victorian time travellers in their amazing H. G. Wells-style Time Machine. They'll stop to entertain you with time travel and science themed magic and mind reading tricks.

Garaghty and Thom

Richard Garaghty and Goronwy

Thom last hosted our Cabaret Stage back in 2017 and were so good that their return is long overdue. Look forward to circus trickery, hilarious comedy routines and quick-witted improvisation.

Les Oiseaux: Neighbourhood Watch

The North East's most famous stilt-walking exports return to Tynemouth after travelling from South America to China and many points in between. And they are as cheeky as ever, so watch out!

Dovetail: Vanhulle Dance Theatre

Two agile performers go to the limits of physicality to show what it is to bend but not break!

Choreographer Mickaël 'Marso' Rivière has an international reputation for his unique blend of hip hop dance, martial arts and contemporary movement.

Gibbon: Gandini Juggling

This poetic and comedic show by Chris Patfield and Jose Triguero uses hypnotic patterns of juggling and movement to explore affection, violence, co-operation and the need for personal spaceand what happens when it is taken away!

Stories In The City: Les Dudes

All the way from Canada, Les Dudes return with their new show. Stories In The City brings circus, live music and physical comedy together in a delicious mix that is surprising, funny and touching.

There is a continuous programme of activities for children and families at Tynemouth Station between 11am and 4pm each day.

The Birds and The Bees: Neighbourhood Watch:

Newcastle-based Neighbourhood Watch bring their amazing collection of human-sized insects and exotic birds to Tynemouth Station. Children will love the beautiful creatures displayed in all their finery, and can join in simple games and puzzles with an ecological theme.

Please be aware that Neighbourhood Watch’s performers will need to take breaks from time to time!

Festival Parade ‘Birthday Party’

Saturday 8 July from 11.15am

Kings Priory First School

Led by ‘Billy Bay the Birthday Bairn’ puppet, hundreds of local school children and community groups from across North Tyneside will take centre stage in this year’s fantasy birthday party themed parade.

There’ll be giant jellies, dancing French fancies, party hedgehogs and piles of presents along with party animals of every sort.

With colourful costumes fashioned in school workshops and dance moves led by the LP Dance in Education team, the promenaders will take over Front Street joined by The Spanish City Rollers carnival band, Drumdin and the North Tyneside Music Education Hub samba bloco.

Everyone will be revealing their imaginative outfits and moves on the day!

JAZZ STAGE

12pm - The Vieux Carré Jazzmen

The Vieux Carré play and sing a mixed programme of popular music from the 1920s and 1930s including rags, marches, blues and spirituals.

1.35pm – Archipelago

With influences stretching from Joni Mitchell to Don Cherry to Esperanza Spalding, Archipelago draw on a deep pool of sonic references and the diversity of their individual musical histories.

3.10pm - Classic Swing

Six piece band and vocalist playing an entertaining selection of jazz, specialising in 1930s swing.

4.40pm - Trilogy of Four

Four piece featuring a wide repertoire of jazz.

12pm - Rendezvous Jazz

This popular six piece has a wide repertoire including traditional, New Orleans and Dixieland Jazz, as well as blues and ballads.

1.35pm - The Delta Prophets Trio

Blues and swing trio featuring harmonica, guitar and vocals.

3.10pm - Abbie Finn Trio

North East based jazz ensemble led by the energetic young drummer. In the trio she works with fellow Leeds College of Music Alumnus, saxophonist Harry Keeble, and bass player Paul Grainger.

4.40pm - River City Band

A six piece playing traditional jazz from the 1930s and 1940s in the style of Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and Kid Ory.

At Wallsend Festival just a week earlier, local young musicians took part in a competition to open today’s show!

Lily Brooke

Part of a new wave of original, alternative pop artists, Lily Brooke creates stunningly catchy pop tunes with dark undertones. She has caught the attention of industry and fans alike, amassing a small army of social media followers hungry for more!

Jen & Liv

Jen & Liv are best friends who discovered their love for performing together whilst busking in Newcastle three years ago. Known for their tight harmonies and vibrant energy on stage they took their dream full time and are now travelling performing hits all over the UK including Bob Marley, Fleetwood Mac, TLC, Dua Lipa and more.

Big Red and The Grinners

Featuring banjo, accordion, double bass, acoustic guitars and percussion, Big Red & the Grinners move seamlessly from the likes of Technotronic’s ‘Pump Up the Jam’ to The Bangles’ ’Walk Like an Egyptian’. You will know the songs but won’t have heard them played quite like this!

Kevin Davy White

Kevin captured the nation’s attention in 2017 with powerful and emotional performances in the live finals of The X Factor. With blues, soul, rock and funk in his heart, expect a show full of passion and great songs.

Gabrielle

One of the most successful soul singers of her generation, Gabrielle made an immediate impact when her debut single ‘Dreams’ spent three weeks at number one in the summer of 1993. Her second single ‘Rise’, also a number one, followed in 2000 and her catalogue of hits includes a further eight Top 10s, notably ‘Out Of Reach’, ‘If You Ever’ (with East 17) and ‘Give Me A Little More Time’. A true pop icon.

Park and ride users can park in Beaconsfield Car Park (subject to availability) and must use pay and display. Payment machines are located in the car park. Payment can also be made via the parking app RingGo.

Metro

Parking will be extremely limited in and around Tynemouth. We recommend that you use public transport or the Park and Ride service wherever possible.

Normal service will run with trains every 12 minutes on Saturday daytime and every 15 minutes in the evening and on Sunday.

Take the kids for free, up to three children aged eleven and under can travel for free with a fare paying adult.

Help us reduce waste

Look out for recycling stations inside the Priory, where you can recycle empty plastic bottles and drinks cans, clean cardboard and foil in the purple wheelie bins. All other items should go in the general waste bins on the site. Recycling bins can also be found around Tynemouth village and outside Tynemouth Station.

If you have a reusable water bottle with you, you can re-fill it from the fountain to the side of the Gibraltar Rock located just outside of the public toilets.

Priory Shows FAQs

Where can I buy tickets?

Remaining tickets are available from See Tickets and Ticketmaster. Re-sale tickets may be available from See Tickets Fan to Fan Marketplace and Twickets.

What if my tickets don’t turn up?

We are unable to deal with ticket issues unless we have been notified of changes by the ticket provider. If you have lost tickets or your tickets do not arrive in time, you must contact the ticket company ahead of the event.

What time are the concerts?

Gates open at 6pm. Support acts start at around 7pm. Concerts finish by 10pm. For Sunday afternoon, gates open at 11.45am and the concert finishes by 7pm.

Can I bring my own food and drink?

Food and drink is available on site (see page 11) but people can also bring their own. Alcohol is allowed in moderate quantities. Glass and BBQs are NOT permitted. Bag searches will be conducted.

Is there any seating inside the Priory?

No, they are standing concerts. We have an accessible viewing area for those with disabilities and additional needs, with spaces on a first come first served basis. People can bring camping chairs but should be mindful that views may be restricted. Tents are not permitted.

Is the site accessible?

Yes it is. There is a path all the way into the Priory which leads to a raised viewing area, if required. There are accessible toilets on site.

If I need to leave the concert can I get back in?

There is no re-admittance once you have entered the Priory.

Is there a cash machine?

There is no ATM on site. Street food traders and the bar all accept card payments.

Are dogs allowed?

No dogs are allowed on site, except guide dogs.

Is smoking allowed? No smoking is permitted.

Can I take photos?

Yes. Capturing photos for personal use is fine. Photography or filming for commercial use is not allowed without prior authorisation.

Where can I park?

Parking will be extremely limited in and around Tynemouth Village. We recommend that you use public transport where possible (www.nexus.org.uk). There are limited blue badge parking spaces nearby. If travelling by car, please note Front Street will be closed on Saturday and Sunday.
