BIG MEET 6

Date: 19th October 2016

Time: 10.30am - 4.30pm

Hosted at UCL, organised with the help and support of Debbie Sorkin and Sue James

The power of place to affect people’s mental and physical health, and hence their overall wellbeing, has been recognised for many years and is the central tenet of NHS England’s Healthy New Towns programme. Recent health and wellbeing indicators, and reports such as the House of Lords Select Committee

Review on ‘Building Better Places’, have also illustrated the effects that place design and quality can have on people’s physical and mental health.

The Place Alliance, which puts collaboration at the heart of its work, invites you to BIG MEET 6 to look at different aspects of the health and place connection, so that participants can share expertise, learn from what’s happening around the country and explore how to innovate in their own practice.

Those taking part are likely to come from the built environment, health, public health and housing sectors, but the day is aimed at anyone who has an interest in creating and maintaining places that are healthy and attractive for people to live and work in.

Confirmed speakers: Dr Jessica Allen (Institute of Health Equity, UCL and Marmot Review Team), Matt Bell (Berkeley Homes), Rupert Bentley Walls (Trees and Design Action Group), Prof Matthew Carmona (UCL and Place Alliance Chair), Dr Ann Marie Connolly (Public Health England), Prof Rhiannon Corcoran (University of Liverpool), Nick Grayson (Birmingham City Council), Rod King (20s Plenty for Us), Dr Daniel Masterson (Stoke-on-Trent City Council), Bruce McVean (Transport for London), Debbie Sorkin (The Leadership Centre), Sarah Wigglesworth (Sarah Wigglesworth Architects and Dwell Project).

The Place Alliance is a voluntary movement that relies on donations. There is no charge to be a supporter or to attend our Big Meets, but if you would like to donate to help cover the cost of the lunch and other expenses then please visit our UCL online giving page to make a gift now.

Organised by

The Place Alliance was established in 2014. Initially it aimed to encourage collaboration, communication and collective leadership in the cause of better place quality. Increasingly it has developed a campaigning role and does this through direct engagement and the dissemination of targeted research and thought leadership to key governmental, professional and community audiences. The Place Alliance provides a forum for its supporters to come together, debate and work towards raising the national consciousness regarding the importance of place quality.

We are open to all who share our vision and invite you to join us!
