Introduction

What is CHAF.png

The Community Housing Assistance Fund (CHAF), a fund of HomeStart, Inc, helps neighbors experiencing homelessness or housing instability to pay the high initial costs of moving into a safe, stable home. On their own, families and individuals being pushed by economic hardship into homelessness simply don’t have the thousands of dollars required to pay for startup costs. Lately, more and more available units require an additional broker’s fee to move in– a cost that no publicly-funded resource will cover. Already struggling to find a place to live, neighbors in crisis are being shut out from available, affordable apartments because of these financial barriers.

CHAF is a restricted emergency assistance fund of HomeStart, Inc. which is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit working to end and prevent homelessness.  HomeStart’s Tax ID # is 04-3311270 and all contributions to CHAF are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

CHAF bridges that gap between homelessness and a stable home by covering expenses such as first and last month’s rent, security deposits, moving costs, and even utility arrears that would prevent our clients from having a fresh start.
