The Delaware African American Heritage Council (DAAHC) was founded in 2018 to expand, include and elevate the historic and present-day contributions of African Americans through education and engagement. Objectively, DAAHC will lead the Delaware County community in understanding the African American experience through sharing significant contributions and achievements, past and present, to guide in stronger connections, inclusion and equity within our community.
The DAAHC Scholarship was established to recognize African American graduating seniors within Delaware City Schools who are seeking higher education through the collegiate or trade school paths. Through this strategic effort, we seek to affirm, advance and value the hopes, dreams and needs of African American students and families.
APPLICATION
To apply for the DAAHC Scholarship, students are required to complete the online application and:
1.
Compose a 500 to 750 word essay - or - video that addresses how the life and legacy of a prominent figure in African American history or family member that has impacted you - or - ,
2.
Compose a 500 to 750 word analysis - or - video of a contemporary issue facing African American life and how you plan to contribute to the community and society-at-large in solving the issue.
Applications should also include the following:

7th semester transcript
•
Resume which should include:
o
Work Experience (Please include positions held over the last 4 years, dates of employment, hrs/week.)
o
School Activities (Please include the name of each club/sport participated in during the last 4 years,
number of years participated, any leadership positions held, and any special honors or awards.)
o
Community Activities (Please include the name of each community activity you participated in as a
volunteer (without pay) during the last 4 years, number of years participated.)
• Letter of recommendation from a school or community member.
The essay, analysis or video must be downloaded and attached to the completed application. Upon completing the online application and assignment, a representative from the DAAHC Scholarship Committee will contact the applicant to schedule a virtual interview as the final step in the process.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
• To be eligible for the scholarship applicants must:
•
Be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident.
•
Be a full-time student.
•
Seniors attending Delaware Hayes H.S. and/or Delaware Area Career Center.
•
Must possess a minimum GPA of 2.5 (C+) on a 4.0 system.
•
Must be accepted to an accredited college, university or technical school in the United States.
While first-generation college or trade school students are encouraged to apply, it is not a condition of the scholarship.
SCHOLARSHIP AMOUNT
The DAAHC Scholarship will award four (4), $500 scholarships to be used for school related expenses, including books and materials.
TIMELINE
The application cycle for 2021 will open on Tuesday, March 23 and applications are due by Friday, April 23, 5 p.m. EST. Interviews will be conducted from Monday, April 26 through Friday, April 30. Selection of candidates will be made the week of May 1.
