💧🏡 Fluid Living — Inspiration

What is this about?

I am currently working on my Bachelor Thesis and currently collecting all kinds of inspiration.

I want to visualize a positive future scenario. How do we want to live? Basically the opposite of Critical Design, let’s call it Design Dreaming.

My goal is to make this scenario as tangible as possible. Ideally even show what we should do today in order to get there.

👽 Future Scenario

We work, live, eat … in self-driving mini-houses: 

Imagine skiing in the mountains on a Sunday. While you sleep your mini-house drives you to work while the office-house drives towards you. You wake up nearby and cycle through the woods to work. Just in time for lunch your favorite restaurant drives by. After work you meet a friend at a big multi-puprpose building for a concert. And on Saturday morning you wake up by the beach with friends and family.

With the rise of affordable autonomous vehicles like mini-houses, new organic mini-cities emerge in previously uninhabited regions. These fluid cities adapt to flora & fauna, weather and the needs of people and communities. In winter these fluid cities move south and in summer back to the north. We no longer have to decide between the city or countryside, we can have the best of both worlds: nature & tranquility + network and convenience. Rigid cities like Berlin will become less desirable and flexibility will become the new luxury.

Self-driving mini-houses?
  • Basically your flat/room on wheels
  • It’s highly self-sufficient: it produces its own energy, recycles its water etc.
  • They are affordable, at least the basic version
  • People need less space as they own less because you can get delivered whatever you need really fast
  • I believe in a balance of fluid vehicles and rigid structures

Fluid Living

In the coming years our mobility will improve tremendously but also decrease the need for mobility making us less dependent on our existing infrastructure. How could it work? An optimists scenario.

Autonomous vehicles and self-sufficient tiny houses dramatically reduce our commuting time and allow us to move freely. Services and goods are delivered efficiently while technologies like virtual reality allow us to work from home. We form new organic mini-cities in previously uninhabited regions. They quickly adapt to the weather and needs of the people, communities, flora and fauna. We no longer have to decide between the city or the countryside, we can have the best of both worlds. Rigid and dense cities like Berlin will become less desirable as flexibility becomes our new priority.

Rather than attempt to present the ultimate solution, ready to build and scale tomorrow, I want to explore directions that could be interesting to think about. I want to analyze past and current developments, visualize the concept of fluid living with its possibilities + constraints and how it could affect other parts of our life.
