Race: Let's Talk About It Wednesday, February 11, 2015 7:00:00 PM Coordinated Universal Time - 8:00:00 PM Coordinated Universal Time
With the unfortunate recent events...Michael Brown...Eric Garner...Tamir Rice...who were unarmed and killed by police, the issue of racial discrimination is front and center again. Demonstrations around the country show how divided we are on the issue of race. A Pew Research survey showed that 78% of Blacks and only 37% of Whites thought that the Ferguson (Michael Brown) shooting had serious racial implications. What is the impact in the workplace of these recent events? How do we have constructive conversations across racial lines? We easily talk about generational diversity. There are all sorts of programs focused on women. The topic of the aging population does not seem to make us squeamish. We even have a certain comfort level discussing cultural differences such as ethnicity (e.g. Asian Americans, Latinos). Not surprising, authentic discussions pertaining to LGBT issues are still rare, but it is surprising that open dialogue about race is still just as unlikely. This special complimentary learning lab will explore the state of race relations in the workplace. We want to hear from both Blacks and Whites on how the recent events impact their working relationships and productivity. Speaker Mary-Frances Winters & Dr. Joseph R.
