Elizabeth McKinnie will no longer accept men ruling her life. After the Civil War devastated her family home, and having no way to survive, Elizabeth accepts one of the mail-order bride proposals presented to her and her sisters. She chooses a man who promises to treat her as an equal. Her sister convinces her to switch suitors, proclaiming the weather in Texas would be more suitable for Elizabeth’s weak lungs. Agreeing, she heads west to meet the mysterious cattle baron she knows little about.

Jeb Clayton grew up as a poor son of a drunkard. He has worked his entire life to ensure he never starves again. He is a man who understands cows better than women, especially after watching the fairer sex manipulate his father into an early grave. Still, he begrudgingly agrees to marry a sturdy bride to produce sons who can help build his ranch into an empire. Yet, what he sees getting off the stagecoach is a whisper-of-a-woman with undesirable birthing hips.

When Elizabeth’s and Jeb’s futures are threatened will they join forces, or will their bitterness be their end?

I liked it but didn't love it. And the ending was too quick and not particularly romantic.

Jeb is a cantankerous rancher with a managing mother, who hates women.
Elizabeth is a southern belle fresh from the war who is part special snowflake.
But he needs a bride to make his mother happy with grandbabies and she needs a home away from the burnt out shell of the south.

I really enjoyed the first 3rd but then Jeb started to wear on me and Elizabeth was just too chock full of super powers. She's a fantastic cook, beautiful, can rescue everyone (several times) with her quick reactions and nerves of steel...
There's also the amazing way she can talk on and on while having an asthma attack.

But anyways, Jeb takes an instant dislike to her when they meet by chance before she gets to the ranch but the mother manipulates things to keep them together.

The story had promise but it just jumped the shark way too many times.

safety is good and it's a clean read anyways.

When love ruins all your plans…

The characters are everything in this slice of the American Wild West that shares the adventure of that time as well as the hardships. War, lawlessness, survival – there was a lot to live through and overcome and Elizabeth and Jeb’s romance highlights them all…

“…but that’s what’s funny about destiny. It’s a vixen…”

Elizabeth was a survivor. She had gone through the wars (literally) and suddenly found herself alone with no one to count on but herself. She was feisty, resourceful and extremely likable as she adapted to each situation with a strength I couldn’t help but admire. She didn’t rail against all the bad things in her life but met each challenge – including Jeb – with an attitude that could see her through anything. And Jeb, well, he was going to be the biggest challenge of them all…

Initially, Jeb came off as a real jerk. Condescending, rude, it soon became clear that the façade he showed the world was one he'd grown to protect himself. Once Elizabeth started to chip away at that crusty, and unpleasant, exterior he quickly showed he was more than grumpiness (and hid a lot to love). Of course that took a while and the situations they both found themselves in meant their relationship grew slowly but surely while they fought for the ranch, their future and for their very lives…

It was family, love and sacrifice rolled into a historical romance that ticked all the boxes. I realized too late that I started this series with the fourth title but it totally worked as a standalone and I now have at least three of Elizabeth’s sister’s stories to catch up on. I can’t wait!

After the Civil War there was so much  destruction left behind. Lost loved ones. Homes destroyed. In the 1800's women had no rights. If the men in their lives died, they were on their own.

Elizabeth and her six sisters had a chance to become mail order brides that would spread them over the states to begin a new life.

Elizabeth is a strong and fiesty young woman who would not allow any man to control her life. She stood on firm ground determined to work as hard if not harder than any man.

Jeb was influenced by his alcoholic,  womanizer father that women were nothing but liars and manipulative. Jeb wanted his wife to be a cook and have sons.

Love on the Ranch is a beautifully written historical romance with a slow burn. Loved the adventures on the trail ride. Flawless characters. Perfect story.

This story hit close to home. Born in Sherman. Raised in Texas.

I look forward to reading more of this talented author's work.

Wow!!!! I absolutely ADORED this book!!! What a treat. This was my first book by Ciara Knight (and my first Historical Western Romance too) and I must say I am VERY impressed. Wow!! I fell irrevocably in love with Ciara Knight’s words. From the very beginning to the very last page, I was GLUED. I actually stayed up all night reading which is something that almost never happens.

Elizabeth—what an amazing character!! She was so strong and sassy! Loved, loved, loved her. She certainly didn’t put up with anyone’s crap and had a strong head on her shoulders. She knew what she needed to do to survive in a world ruled by men and got it done. She was so strong and kind-hearted. Absolutely loved her.

Jeb—there was so much more to him than met the eye so he kept me intrigued with each turn of the page. He was a tough man on the outside, but you could just tell he had a heart of gold in the inside. He was protective of Elizabeth and always a gentleman. They did have their fair share of arguments, but everything fell back on his rough childhood. He has his reasons and they only made me love his character even more.

What a phenomenal story!! Seriously. I wish the ending included a glimpse more of their future, but I am still incredibly happy with how it all wrapped up.

LOVED IT SO MUCH!!! Can’t recommend this book highly enough.

The book is a good historical romance read. The book is the 4th in the McKinnie Mail Order Bride series but can be read as a stand alone read. The story is a well written, and has a good flow. The characters are good, and interesting. The story is a good historical, western, inspirational, and sweet love story read.

The McKinnie sisters are strong and resilient and I love seeing them find happiness. This is Elizabeth's story. She is feisty and determined, and Jeb is so stubborn. The sparks really fly as they face off. It's another great book in a wonderful series!

Unexpected Adventure

This was one of the better books in the series. I was a fan of Elizabeth right away and enjoyed her spirit as she fought against the many challenges she faced to survive her harsh journey to happiness. There were a few times the characters' stubbornness drove me crazy, but I was happy with the ending and look forward to reading Francine's story. 4.4/5

Excellent Period Piece

What a breath of fresh air this book was! There's nothing like getting out of your comfort zone occasionally and that is exactly what Love on the Ranch was for me. While it is book four in the series, it was the first one I read and is perfect as a standalone.

We are back in the 1800's with this story, a time when a woman's worth was how well she can cook and how many babies she can produce. Hard to believe and very difficult for a fiery red head called Elizabeth. This was my kind of girl, strong-willed and feisty. She lets it be known that she can do whatever a man can, with no help. She learned the hard way about losing everything to a man and surely wasn't going to let it happen again.

Mail order bride or not, Jeb didn't sign up for what he got with Elizabeth. He was looking for a wife to take care of him and have his babies, not a woman that stood up to him at every turn. Challenge him on his every word. He's ready to send her back, however not before he has a big cattle run that she somehow ends up on.

The book was well written and had me so hooked I finished it in one sitting. I loved going back to this time and even more so with such a strong-willed leading lady. Like I mentioned, it's book four in this series, however, stands well on its own. If anything, it peaked my interest in the first three of the series.

I was actually quite excited to start this book! I do enjoy a good historical, mail order bride story and this one caught my attention.

It is book 4 in the series and I was intrigued by the others stories but thanks to the small bit at the beginning that gave an overview I didn't really feel like I had missed too much. The book starts of well with a spunky character who knows what she wants out of life and isn't going to settle despite her limited options.

The book was well written and definitely hit all the marks of a good historical story - no marks deducted there! What was missing for me was the ROMANCE! This was a sweet story - meaning no steam at all, which would have even been fine but there was VERY little in the way of romance other than the private musings of Elizabeth and Jeb about their attraction to the other. No kissing, no nothing. By the end of the book I was sorely disappointed as the rest of the story had been quite entertaining but I didn't feel like I had read a romance - just a historical themed story. Had there been more to the romance I probably would have gone and sourced out the other books in the series but I hit the end of the book feeling let down.

Bottom line, if you like a clean 'romance' in the historical genre then this one is for you!

This is a new author for me and I must say I very much enjoyed this book and the character within it. This is book 4 of this series and I just might have to go back and read them all when time permits. I found the authors writing style to be great with the flow and descriptive language used had me totally interested to the end. I loved Elisabeth she is a strong independent woman that was not going to let any man stop her from doing what she wanted or needed to do. The book is full of drama and incidents that will have you wanting to read more. I received an ARC copy of this book and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Elizabeth McKinnie has survived the Civil War with the loss of her home and most of her family and her only hope for a future is to be a mail-order bride. But her husband to be is not the one she planned to leave for as her sister switches the travel plans at the last moment. She is off to Texas where her sister believed would be a better choice for her health.

Jeb Clayton is so determined to not be like his father he closes himself off to opportunities that just make him a better man. Jeb as had to fight his way with his mother’s help from poverty to having his own cattle ranch. He finally agrees with his mother to arrange a marriage for him as he wants to grow his ranch and he will need sons to help it grow.

Things do not go well from the moment the two meet with the drama and danger that will follow them on their journey. Jeb refuses to commit to a liar and Elizabeth refused to return home to nothing. Let the standoff begin!

I have read the first book in this series and somehow missed book 2 and 3 and now got my hands on the fourth book in the McKinnie mail order brides. It can be read as a complete standalone, since the beginning tells a little about how and why the sisters chose to be mail order brides.
I have to say, the concept of mail order brides always fascinated me, so this series tickled my fancy, even though I normally don’t like romance books set in the past. I enjoyed reading this one immensely.
Elizabeth was a great character. She was headstrong, stubborn and lovely. The whole package. The way she caed about the ranch workers and (even though she did not want to admit it) her husband-to-be astonished me. After everything she went through she was able to keep the love for people in her heart, keep an open mind and heart and let new people in, instead of closing herself off from the world.
Jeb was a difficult character, I did not like in the beginning. His rude exterior hid a soft core and during the book layer upon layer of his character was revealed and I liked him more and more. Today we would call Elizabeth and Jeb together a power couple and I would love to see a bit more of them, when the ranch is flourishing and the people working there are happy. Maybe a meeting between all of the sisters?
The writing style supported the story perfectly and not once did the author slip and use modern wording or phrases. It helped me immerse myself completely in the story and read it in one sitting.

Love on the Ranch is a mail order bride book that is about two people who have to overcome their own insecurities and preconceived ideas about marriage to be able to find love.

Elizabeth Mckinnie is forced to become a mail order bride because her home is destroyed during the Civil War. Her sisters have become brides and now it is her turn. Elizabeth has asthma so her sister switches places with her and send Elizabeth to a ranch to marry a man she has not corresponded with. All Elizabeth wanted to be an equal partner in marriage and she thinks this husband is controlling and only wants a bride to make sons with. On the stage ride down, Elizabeth meets Jeb Clayton. He is a wealthy rancher that is very opinionated and hard to get a long with. Elizabeth and Jeb are shocked to learn that they are the ones that are supposed to marry each other. Neither wants the other for a partner. Jeb takes Elizabeth back to his ranch and she takes on the job of cooking for him and his ranch hands. She thinks that if she proves her worth that Jeb will keep her on as a worker. What neither of them expect is to fall in love but that is exactly what happens.

Love on the Ranch gets your attention right away and moves at a good speed to keep you engaged in the book. I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest feedback.

This is the 4th book in the McKinnie Mail Order Bride series by Ciara Knight. I've read 1, 2 and 4. I've got to find #3. You don't necessarily have to read the first one as the Author does a great job providing back ground history through out the book. This series is about a family of sisters. The Civil war brought so much destruction to their homestead and family that the sisters are starting to spread across the country in the mail order bride process. I love Elizabeth's character. She's strong, feisty and full of spirit. She is determined to be independent and not allow any man to rule her. Pretty impressive for the late 1800's. She doesn't want to be just a baby factory so when she begins her journey to Texas to meet her betrothed she has some surprises along the way and at arrival. It's amusing, full of adventure, strong will and love. I highly recommend this series. I really love how this author writes and can't wait to read the next one. I'm on the hunt for the 3rd now.

This is a new author to me and I received an ARC for reviewing.

From the moment that Elizabeth meets Jeb the sparks are there but both deny them. Elizabeth is a strong independent woman who has survived the civil war and is making sacrifices to help her sisters survive the aftermath by each agreeing to be mail order brides. She has a health condition that forces her sister to switch spots and she is sent to meet a cowboy instead of her intended.

Jeb is a cowboy trying to make his ranch profitable to support his ranch hands as well as his mother. His past concerning his father has influenced the way he perceives women in general and he's determined that there is no way Elizabeth is the right one for him.
Throughout the book the characters come alive and face many challenges while creating a life in Texas. The dialogue flows easily and the development of the story is one that will keep all readers entertained.
This book has definitely made me want to go ahead and read other books by this author.

I don't read much historical fiction because the creative license taken often veers way off from historical facts. However, this one is set in time period when women were often forced out of their traditional roles and had to take extreme actions just to survive. So, while you probably wouldn't have found many, if any, women doing the things Elizabeth does, it makes you feel good to think they might have, and certainly gives you reason to smile. Jeb, on the other hand, frustrated me to no end with his comparisons between women and cows, even the ones he didn't voice, but he's still an entertaining character and he does show tremendous growth as the story progresses. I did enjoy Elizabeth standing up for herself with him, and the ways she shows him just how strong she is. I haven't read the earlier books in this series, but I had no problem following the story in this one. So, while I can't speak about its predecessors, Love On the Ranch is an entertaining story about love, hardship, and finding family where you least expect it.

Love on the Ranch (McKinnie Mail Order Brides Book 4)

I love nothing more than a good historical romance story and this was a brilliant read! I was totally captivated by what I was reading from the very first page. The authors’ writing was detailed and rich and I felt immersed into the time period in which the story was set. This is the second book that I have read by this author but the first from this series.
I really liked the characters and enjoyed reading about them. Elizabeth was a strong character; she was determined to find someone who was going to treat her as an equal. She was firm in her beliefs and I admired that about her. Jeb was a strange character and definitely one I had to get used to but it was nice to have to read to find out more about him. His intriguing character definitely kept me turning the pages!
I really enjoyed this book and would absolutely love to read the other books in the series and find out more about Elizabeth’s sisters!

This was a light, romantic read about a southern woman, after the Civil War, who has lost everything and agrees to be a mail order bride. Elizabeth winds up out west, on a cattle ranch owned by Jeb, a man whose childhood was difficult at best. Jeb's father was an alcoholic who squandered whatever money the family had on booze and gambling. Jeb grew up hungry and is driven to make sure he is successful at his work, and never hungry again. Elizabeth grew up in a wealthy and loving family and after losing her home and several family members, she is determined to make a match with a man who will see her as an equal partner, not his property. The two spar and sparks fly, but this nicely written novel ends predictably after some interesting situations arise. A perfect escape read for this busy time of year.

Many thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for a review copy. This is my honest opinion.

This is the first book I've read by Ms. Knight and also the first Historical romance I've read and I must say I am impressed by both. I enjoyed Miss Knight's writing style and thoroughly enjoyed the story. Even though it was set in the Post Civil War era, it did not feel that way. I found it funny that the main part of the story was set in Sherman Texas as I have a friend who lives there and I have been there. It was interesting to think of the town I knew as it once was.

The characters were well defined and the story extremely interesting. The story kept my interest from the very beginning to the very end I look forward to reading about Elizabeth's sisters in the earlier books in the series. Each book is a standalone. I will also like to see what else Ms. Knight has to offer.

Definitely worth the read.

This is a dramatic, heartwarming and interesting story. Jeb is hard, harsh and stubborn. Elizabeth is a strong, tough, brave, determined and generous. After losing everything during the civil war, Elizabeth has no choice but to be a mail order bride, so she agrees to a match in Seattle, but at the last minute finds that her sister switched places with her and she's going to a cattle baron in Texas. When she arrives, and Jeb finds that she's not who she's supposed to be, he is angry and wants her to leave. But she's determined to earn her place on the ranch, even if it's as a cook. Jeb learns exactly what type of person she is, and how tough she is, on a cattle drive and starts to change his opinion about her, and about marriage. It's a book that should be on your TBR list.

Not JUST another mail order bride book. The McKinnie family lost more than family during the war between the states. The seven remaining sisters agree to be mail order brides, now that they can no longer exist at their home. Each sister being unique in looks, personality and desires how they want for their future. Elizabeth, the independent woman has agreed move to Seattle to be an equal with her future husband. Undermined by her younger domesticated sister, who takes off to Seattle to trade husbands and locations since she fears Elizabeth won’t be able to handle the cold weather due to her health issues. Elizabeth now has to go to Texas to be the domesticated wife and breeder of son’s for a wealthy cattle rancher. Personalities clash. Each sisters tale is different as each one is. Loved the book. Great series!

Love on The Ranch is a sweet, fun and easy historical Christian romance. I really enjoy historical fiction. I typically do not care for romance at all but I really enjoyed this book. I got a big kick out of Elizabeth’s sass, spunk and spirit. I did not care for Jeb at all in the beginning; however, Ciara Knight fleshed him out nicely to become a well-rounded person. I adored the ranch hands, especially Sam!
This book is a solid 4 stars, perfect for a cozy afternoon by the fire. This book is part of a series. I have not read any of those but I certainly intend to now!

Elizabeth and Jeb are hilarious together. They have that love hate chemistry that either turns out really bad or leads to forever. This is the first historical romance I have read by this author and she did an awesome job IMO. I felt like I was there and experiencing what the characters were going through. This isn't just another mail order bride story but one with such heart and passion that you just can't put it down until you know what happens. A very sweet clean romance between two people who are leary to give their hearts to someone. There is adventure, suspense and wonderful side characters - loved Jeb's mom.

Elizabeth is on her way to be a mail order bride, she and her 6 sistera decided that is the only way to survive. The war is over their parents and brothers dead the plantation destroyed.
Jeb and her hate each other on site. He thinks women are lies and manipulators, he is not going to be taken in like his pa.
Read the tale of their discovery of what is like for people in the world of 1866 that they live in.
I loved this historical story, Elizabeth was a strong woman after a good life and Jeb Aman with the same dream.

After the Civil War faced with no real future Elizabeth has agreed like her seven sisters to become mail order brides. Things are pretty rocky at first and Jeb is a disgusting jerk. Elizabeth has had to face the war, loss of her home and death of family her family has only thought of her as weak, but the last thing this character is weak. A really fantastic written story my granddaughter is now reading it as she is super impressed. The female characters are just the right kind of heroines young girls need. This is a rare and perfect book to pass on to another generation. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Elizabeth is sent as a mail order bride to supposedly a wealthy land owner. When she arrives, she gets off to a bad start with Jeb. He can't just send her back and his mother invites her to the ranch. Elizabeth is quite a smart mouthed woman- she stands up to him. While on the ranch, she starts to cook and the men at the ranch sure do appreciate her. She starts to ingratiate herself there even though Jeb is sure he will figure out a way to send her back. She does things he gets mad about and the story is a lot about these two talking and jabbing at one another. It makes for a pretty good read. The girl can do a lot of things and it makes it fun when she is so stubborn.

This is Elizabeth McKinnie and Jeb Claytons story, 4th in the McKinnie Mail Order Brides Series; a standalone, happily ever after, sweet love story.
This is the story of a woman strong enough to rise to any situation she is confronted with and a man who has been raised not to trust any woman.
This tale is well written, has nice flow, interesting characters, both good and bad; a nice sweet romance. This is the first book I’ve read of this author and look forward to reading more in this series.

Jeb thinks he’s been duped by Elizabeth and she wants a man who doesn’t treat her like his property. Together they find what they are looking for on a long, tiring cattle drive. Elizabeth McKinnie decides to be a mail-order bride after losing everything in the civil war. At the last minute her sister Francine switches suitors thinking asthmatic Elizabeth will have the easier life as the wife of a cattle baron in Texas. But from the day Elizabeth and Jed Clayton meet they rub each other the wrong way and he refuses to marry her. It isn't until she works as hard as his men and risks her life repeatedly that he comes to appreciate her worth. Plenty of funny and suspenseful moments in this historical western romance.
