Redemption Highway #9

Luci's Lullaby

Rate this book
You know that old saying… He’s the next big thing.

Yeah, that was me. I was a rising star, and I couldn’t have been happier.

Fame, money, women at every turn. I had it all, until the day my world came crashing down.

I never fathomed this would be my life.

But here I am, a single dad at twenty-eight and I have no clue what I’m doing.

I pray every day I’m giving her the best life, 'cause it’s the only one I know.

The minute I lost everything and had nothing left to give.

Charlee showed up.

She restored my faith and gave us so much more than I ever deserved.

So can you tell me why I’m sitting here alone?

Every single day that goes by without them, I lose more of myself.

It’s hard to imagine a world they’re not part of.

So I pick up my old guitar and tell them both how I feel.

Turns out, lullabies aren’t just for children.

Some would consider there to be a spoiler or two I don’t but anyhow you have been warned.
Characters & Chemistry.

We get a brief introduction of the MC when they go to high school but due to the heroine having to leave it is brief. Which is cute. I much preferred the teenaged Hero to the one we meet 13 years later.

So 13 years later…

Alden Beck has always wanted to sing ever since he was a teenager he finally achieves his goal but a tragic accident makes him lose his way. Did I like Alden? Not really. He took his horn dog ways a bit too far but he has great character development throughout the book and at the end I can tolerate him.

Charlee Rae Wright is finally living the dream of going to college to get her degree. After her Mum being so sick for so long and looking after her brother and sending him off to college it is her turn.

Fate apparently is fickle thing and Charlee and Alden meet again. Alden doesn’t recognise Charlee but Charlee sure does recognise Alden but she lies to him by saying her name is Rae until he finds out that she lied.

After all of this drama I was kind of exhausted but I did continue.

Now the chemistry there is that underlying sizzling between these two and although Charlee knows this they still have sex. There is a detailed sex scene with other woman. He tries to shag another woman to forget Charlee but with another woman’s lips on his dick he suddenly realises he can’t do it. Please as an author is this shite really necessary? Anywayz they have amazeball sex, wouldn’t know for sure as I kind of skimmed and then they decide to be friends. Yep cue the eyeroll cause I mean dude why say let’s forget it ever happened why to sly a woman on the spot you arse.

But what really rubbed me the wrong way was that Charlee put her classes on hold to look after Luci while Alden had to tour. Yes it was per contractual agreement so he had no choice but due to bringing up her little brother it was like she was putting her life on hold again.

Writing, Plot & Pace.

This is a new to me author and she knows how to write emotional settings with flawed characters. I have no complaints about the writing as she truly is talented but there are just other reasons why this book doesn’t work for me.

I am a sucker for a good old single Dad romance but here the blurb implied something that just wasn’t the case. Alden isn’t the father he is the guardian of his niece after his brother and sister-in-law die in a car accident. The baby is saved ad Alden then becomes the guardian of little Luci Renee. That is misleading in my opinion. Other than that the plot is solid although it has been used a time or two.

The pace of the book is good although there was no real balance between the hard times and the banter that was going on between these two. I feel that the flow of the story in regards to the emotions and what the author was aiming to achieve could have been smoother.

Verdict.

Unfortunately and this just seems to be me I liked the book but I didn’t love it. I also seem to be in the minority here as well but I am interested enough to check out some other books by this author. Just because it was a hit for me doesn’t mean it can’t and won’t be a hit for you.

Mermaid kisses and starfish wishes.... "Sigh"

This book was beautifully written. I floved everything about it, angst, hot sex, sexy country singer man, and a flowing storyline.
Alden is a sexy as heck country singer trying to make it big. He's a player.....until he runs into his high school crush. She ruined him and his playboy ways. Just when everything is going good he gets some heart shattering news. It's time for him to grow up and be responsible.
Charlee was an amazing person. She's been in love with Alden since high school. One amazing night and then the "friend" zone.
This relationship between the two was beautiful and horrific at the same time to witness. The love these two have for Luci is just beautiful. The self battles these two need to overcome to reach their HEA was brutal but so worth it. They both have such an amazing support system.
I have a quote from the book that touched my heart and here it is.....
"Do you feel this, the way my heart ❤ beats for you? I've waited all my life for this kind of rhythm."
Highly recommend this book!! Thanks for keeping this avid reader entertained.

This book! Leaona has done it again, she's made me have a total freak out, bust a leak in my eyes and had me falling in love with all the characters from her first book Cherry Grove all the way to the newcomers in this book.
🎵🎶🎼🎵🎶🎼
In Luci's Lullaby you get heartbreak, grief, lies, anger, sorrow, forgiveness, lust, unconditional love, sex and the characters witty banter. A beautiful cover, 2 POVs ,1 amazing book.
🎵🎶🎼🎵🎶🎼
Alden is a up and coming musician and we all know what goes with a band, groupies, and he likes to take full advantage of an easy lay. That is until Charlee comes back into his life, the last time he seen her was high school but he's never forgotten her. One night with her and he's a goner, but it's just one night and now he's friend zoned. Soon his life is put into a tailspin and he has to man up, he has to be a single dad through the worst possible situation. He has a lot to deal with, he loves baby Luci with all his heart and gives it his all. Charlee is there for they even when he doesn't deserve it, but as a friend. That needs to change, he needs to change his life and win her back, but is it too late?

Charlee reunites with her childhood crush Alden at one of his shows, but she tells a little fib about her name. One night only with him, he doesn't deserve her with the way he's a total manwhore, so loving him as a friend it has to be. Then there's Luci who's stolen her heart, she treats her as her own. With having the baby Alden shows her his true nature that she saw when they were teens, caring and so lovable. Their relationship grows, but his growing fame will put that to the test and it's one they might not survive.

Will they all get the HEA they deserve?
Or will lies and jealousy pull them apart?

I loved this book, but i usually love all that Leaona writes.
Alden is amazing I loved him from the start when he was in high school. True he was a player and he enjoyed himself. But at one point he needed to grow up. Then in the blink of an eye he gets the surprise of is life.
Charlee is someone I could actually see myself being friends with. I loved how dedicated she is to her family

I love this series of stories about this family and their friends that become family but this one starts off with a bomb and goes to the moon and back. This is a second chance type of read that has so many other elements thrown in, which of course not only this family but this author loves to do. We have a love they didn't know they shared, with two who have so much baggage it's ridiculous but it's also life. Without this family and the love they share with everyone connected to them in any way it just feels like home, reminding me of my own family. These two have a battle on their hands and their biggest battle will be their fears. We all know when that fear, is the one thing you can use as an excuse to protect your heart.

Amazing read and while there were times I wanted to scream or shake them or toss my kindle in frustration, their story is everything. It's funny and heart breaking. It's a slow smile and a oh hell no she didn't. It's emotional and yeah One gets to throw his weight around too, after all someone was messing with his boys. Yeah it's all of that and what only this author can do. And it's amazing too.

Leaona sure knows how to rip out your heart! Wow. Just when you think it can't get more heartbreaking she throws something else at us. I thought Chord and Sarah's story was the hardest, but my goodness! I did love touching base with all the previous characters. Where this CAN be read as a stand alone, it brings in the rest of the family from her other books. I have not read them all and still love this group of friends. I recommend this book for sure!

This book is a diamond in the rough. Very rough. There will definitely be spoilers in my review, so if that bothers you, skip down to the last paragraph. It may be best to break this down into what I liked and what just didn’t work for me. First, what I liked:

• The main characters. Alden and Charlee were well thought out, complex, flawed and believable.
• The plot and storyline. I loved the idea of the main characters having met in high school and being reacquainted years later, and the new, single parent out of his element was a wonderful tool to bring them together.
• The secondary characters. They were also well defined and authentic and they added so much to the story. And I thought the believable support system they provided for the main characters was great.
• The author's ability to evoke emotions from the reader. The story is incredibly heartfelt and some bits of the writing, bordering on poetic, definitely yanked on my heartstrings. And the lullaby? Really beautiful.

Now, for what don’t work for me:

• Cheating. I don’t care that it was an incomplete oral application on the hero's appendage, if he's been with the heroine and cares for her, and then does anything intimate with someone else, it's still cheating.
• The excessive amount of drama with insignificant payoff for the reader to balance it out. And this was just ridiculous. Alden’s brother, his only family and father figure, dies along with his wife in a car accident, leaving Alden to raise his infant niece while trying to become a country music star. He gets a truly evil woman for an agent, one who has more interest in getting in his pants and determines to ruin him when he doesn’t jump through her hoops. There's drama throughout between the H/h, a false pregnancy scare with a random groupie, and Alden going of the rails and disappearing for weeks, leaving both Charlee and his niece, Luci. Any one or two of those things would have sufficed, but all together, it was drama overload.
• The hero's inability to take responsibility for his choices and actions. I didn’t even mind the fact that he was a “horn dog” before Charlee, but when he did some stupid things and twisted them around, making it Charlee's fault so that SHE was the one apologizing? Nope. Sorry. That doesn’t fly with me and is just as offensive as the cheating.
• The plagiarizing of song lyrics. Sorry, Ms. Luxx, but if you don’t have permission to use the lyrics and don’t state somewhere in the book that you acquired permission, it looks like plagiarism. Just as if another author quotes your words in their published work without your permission.
• The amount of errors in grammar, punctuation, mechanics, verb tenses and overlooked typos. I knew I was reading an unedited copy, but this was excessive. (I stopped highlighting at about 50% and there were over 200 errors at that point.) So you know I did due diligence, I purchased the release copy and compared it to the advance copy. While several errors have been corrected, there are still too many for my brain to make it an enjoyable reading experience.

While there are numerous issues with this book, I think the author shows talent as a storyteller and has a gift for evoking emotion from the reader. Hopefully with a little more care, a refresher on the basics of writing, and a little less emphasis on so many sources of drama, her future works will reflect that talent. I took a chance on a new author and, in spite of the issues I had with this book, I'm inclined to give her another chance. With a bit more cutting and polishing she could easily uncover the gem waiting for its chance to shine.

*I reviewed an advance copy of this book freely and voluntarily, having made no commitment to provide a review and receiving no compensation of any kind from any source for this review.

This was such a roller-coaster ball of emotions type of story that will have you laughing, frustrated, crying, hurt, hoping and so much more.

Aiden and Charlee have known each other for so long, they're friends and Aiden was a playboy and Charlee knew that... until a tremendous tragedy rocks everyone's lives, leaving Aiden with taking care of his brother's newborn daughter, Luci (his niece) and has to change his lifestyle and Charlee's there to help like always.

Some things happen that changes everything between these two and their feelings evolve into something more yet both try to deny it for their own reasons; reasons you'll learn when reading this story that will break and at the same time mend your heart.

This was a heart-breaking story and at the same time, there's redemption to it.

Aiden and Charlee along with the adorable baby Luci have their happily ever after and all the sad scenes were worth reading this story for their emotional and beautiful ending scene <3 <3

The author, Leaona Luxx, did an amazing job with Aiden's story and I can't wait to see what's story will be next! ;)

This author always gives you best down to earth romances with the family playing a huge part. Yet the anguish is what always stands out the most. If might be because she destroys you're heart. Gah I bawled by eyes out only 1/4 the way in.
Charlee is so full of life. She has a huge heart but has always wanted that one guy she met as a teenager.
Alden takes a bit to warm up to. He's pretty closed off to everyone that isn't in his close circle of friends.
Now these two are explosive together. It's a solid connection but more importantly, the story line doesn't fade in and out. It's diving into the deep of these pages.
I cried, I laughed, I celebrated and I loved every second of it all.

3.5 Stars.

This was my first book by this author and thought I didn’t love it I did enjoy it. I was expecting something a little different from the blurb but i think I liked this better.
Charlee has had a crush on Alden since high school and when she came face to face with him years later she still felt the butterflies. What starts out as a one night stand turns out to be so much more when Alden suddenly becomes guardian of his niece.
This is really a great story and the writer did a phenomenal job giving us her story. I do however feel like it jumped around some and at times I was a little confused. I did really like it and will definitely check out others from this author.

Alden and Charlee. Get ready for another fantastic ride filled with every emotion that your heart can withstand.
Charlee has always had a crush on the handsome Alden but his player ways have always kept her at a distance. They went to the same high school but were not sweethearts. Years later a country bar an attraction that cannot be denied but she refuses to be a notch in his bedpost. Alden realizes that he needs to prove himself and will not risk loosing Charlee .Then Luci is placed into the mix and that is a game changer. I truly love the way that Leaona weaves her magic and you fall in love with her story and characters.

Alden’s music career is taking off and he is having fun sleeping his way through groupies. Charlee had a huge crush on Alden in high school, admiring from hiding or at a distance. One night together breaks her heart and wakes his, but he screws it up. Then after a horrible tragedy, Alden finds himself as a single father, sinking into desperation. Charlee can help as a friend, right? This is a story of learning to love and trust after a life of distrust and loss. Also finding one’s own worth.

Just finished my early copy of this book. I really liked it. The author did a great job of creating believable characters as they fight their personal demons on their way to their HEA.
I was surprised at how badly Alden fell
apart. He is a wonderfully broken hero and it made him feel that much more real. Charlee has her own issues and as she struggled through them I felt like I could really understand her as well.
Definitely a story full of painful emotions, but also of friendships and love and learning how to accept others for who they are and want to be.

Leaona again you amaze me!! Alden has lost a lot of people in his life, but was lucky enough to have Luci brought into his life and heart. Charlee has had a crush on Alden since high school and never expected to see him again, but fate has other plans for them.
This is a very well written story about how no matter what plans you have for you life there are sometimes curves and humps you have to get through before you can find yourself and the one or everybody you are supposed to spend your life with to find true happiness.

Luci's Lullaby by Leaona Luxx is better than a bedtime story! This book definitely did not put me to sleep! I stayed awake into the early hours of the morning devouring this book. The main characters, Alden and Charlee are as unforgettable as their story. Add in a precious baby girl, a couple twists of fate and some truly touching moments...and you'll absolutely need a box of tissues. Luci's Lullaby is amazing, breathtaking, phenomenal, emotional, funny, sexy perfection. Needless to say, I adored this book!

This book is about what dreams are made for.
He needs to grow up and take responsibility for his actions and life. She has loved him since they were in high school and he has loved her for the same amount of time. Both are shy and unsure of each other.
It takes him getting custody of his brothers daughter to make them stop and open their eyes to their life. The little girl brings them to together and showed them what really in slefish love is about . They are a family that no one can tear apart. This is truly a love story for anyone.

Leaona never ceases to surprise me with her capability of writing beautiful books. This book is just another notch in her belt and she should be extremely proud of it. I cried my eyes out in numerous parts of the book and felt my heart break as well. Make sure to have tissues with you when you read this! All I will say, is Alden and Charlee are saints along with all of their friends/family.

The best book yet, written by Leaona! Alden and Charlee's story was so raw and real. The heartbreak that Alden has to go through, not just once but several times just grips your heart and you want to do nothing but cry and reach out to him. This story has all the feels that an amazing book needs. It keeps you reading, needing more.

This was a good read. Alden is a musician and he hooks up with Charlee. They knew each other from high school. They start a complicated relationship together. All while he is trying to raise his niece. Thankfully in the end everything works out and they get their happy ending.

I love Leaona Luxx’s books. She’s an extremely talented author whose books I one-click without question. Leaona Luxx has the ability to draw a reader in by layering a compelling plot, realistic and loveable characters, passion, intrigue and so much more. Leaona Luxx’s books never fail to leave me glued to my seat and she manages to pull a range of emotions from me with each new book. Not only have I seen tremendous growth in her writing abilities with each new book she writes, but I find myself connecting more with her characters and the stories are more compelling. Luci’s Lullaby is one story that I was highly anticipating since we met Alden in Collision – now titled Finding Redemption—where he was the elusive best friend to the heroine. Also, with a cover as stunning as this one, who wouldn’t want to dive into the story of a man that gorgeous?

description

Luci’s Lullaby was a beautiful second chance romance. I always one-click Leaona Luxx’s work before I read blurbs or reviews because she’s just one of those authors who I know I will sit down and get lost in her stories… and I totally did with Luci’s Lullaby. However, after I finished the book, I happened to read the blurb. This is one time that I found something to be slightly misleading since it implied something regarding the parentage of Luci that was, in fact, not the case. It’s minor and I only mention it in so far as to say I wouldn’t classify the book as a single dad romance. I think Leaona Luxx did an amazing job connecting readers with the emotions inherent in this story. I won’t post spoilers, so I’ll have to remain vague here but suffice is to say you will definitely experience an emotional overload. I think the story was fun and angsty, super sexy and well written. Leaona wrote beautiful characters and I loved the chemistry between Charlee and Alden, which was smoking hot! I thought she did a fantastic job of shifting perspectives between Charlee and Alden. And the overall pace of the book fit the storyline well. Also, we get cameos of the characters who we know and love from the previous books written by Leaona Luxx.

description

I loved Luci’s Lullaby and yet it would be remiss of me to give it a full 5 stars in light of a few mistakes. First, there were a number of errors (typos, spelling, grammatical, punctuation, etc) and while I would expect this with an uncorrected ARC, I was reading the published version. Additionally, I found some timeline inconsistencies that made me struggle with a few parts of the story. As I said, I genuinely loved Luci’s Lullaby so it truly pains me not to give Leaona Luxx a full 5-star review. Obviously, I will continue to read Luxx’s books and will likely even reread this one. Regardless of the errors I found, the story, characters, drama, and heat still made for an outstanding romance that I highly recommend.

I am giving this book 3 stars because it has so much potential.

This is my first book by this an author and while I loved the plot the book fell a bit flat for me. I honestly did not feel what you are supposed to feel between a couple. I wanted to truly love this book but I just couldn't. It had so much potential, but some key things were missing. I know what I am reading is an ARC so maybe edits will fix it. I was confused reading it. It jumps around and at times the timeline doesn't make sense to me at all. When you only have days its been months then we go backward and it not the past but current. Then there is a simple fact that some things that happen here there is no way it is believable. It just made me stop and pause. This book is told in both points of view so we get to see inside both mindsets.

Alden and Charlee met albeit briefly in high school. He loves his music and he sits by the lake and strums away on his guitar and dreaming about the day he will make it big. When a tragic accident takes Alden’s parents he then is raised by his older brother. Then you have Charlee who finds out she is going to be moving away because of what is going on in her family's life. They didn't get a chance to be anything. Though they had crushes on each other. Fast forward roughly thirteen years and Alden is making the deal of a lifetime. Then the next moment tragedy strikes again.

What I like was the people, the plot and the love they had for Luci. When everything you know and love is taken away in an instant your whole outlook will change. Alden’s best friend Reese was awesome. Also, I can feel the attraction between these two and it’s there but it is lacking in both Alden and Charlee’s part. I did feel the heartbreak, love, passion and even some hate in there. As I said I really wanted to love this story. What is not to love about a single father becoming a rock star and is a bad boy. It had such great potential but for me, it just felt flat and didn't bring me in as I wanted. I want to be hooked and I want to fall in love with them all. Some people I didn't like the author got that down perfect. SHe was aiming for that. How they met the second time and Alden’s reaction only later to find out not completely true.

I won’t let this book deter me. I will look out for more from this author.

Do you ever scroll through your kindle and see a ton of books by the same author, and just think "Here we go," and dive in? I knew Luci's Lullaby was releasing this week, and I had so many to catch up on, so that's what I did. Dove in, head first.
I ended up binge reading both The Cove Series and the Highway 17 series, in a week. 9 books in 7 days. I'm still in a kind of book-hangover- induced- fog and can't decide if I am in Georgia or North Carolina. If you ask me where I work, I might actually say Woods Construction. Which is not right. *smh*
Anyways---- I started at the beginning with Leaona Luxx's debut novel, Cherry Grove (The Cove Series), and read the entirety of her work in order. It was kind of cool to watch her grow as an author and hone her skills. The books just get better and better, until we hit Luci's Lullaby, which is my favorite in both series. It really is her best work so far.
Both series intertwine and connect with each other, though each individual book can be read stand-alone, they are all part of a bigger picture. Luci's Lullaby really hits this perfectly as all of our favorite characters from the previous novels come together to help Alden write his love song.
Though there's no action packed suspense in Lullaby, it's full of angsty drama and tear jerker moments. (spell check says neither of those are words. whatevs.) Oh, and a second chance..... I'm a sucker.
Both series deal with some HEAVY sh*t. Deep. Some have action and suspense, others will make you pm the author about her book wrecking your life.
Or, that might just be me......

The Cove Series:
Cherry Grove (One & Lea)
Hard to Love (Hardy & Thayer)

Highway 17 Series:
Southern Comfort (Brannon & Torrie)
Love, Riley (Riley & Ava)
Finding Redemption (Walker & Reese)
Wrecking Us Saving You (Chord & Sarah)
Lies in Ink & Whiskey (Lachlan & Maisyn)
Whiskey Rebellion (Lachlan &Maisyn)
Luci's Lullaby (Alden & Charlee)

AGES: 18+

SERIES WARNINGS: graphic sex, violence, domestic violence triggers, language, drinking, drug references, rape triggers

I have mixed emotions about this book. I was sad and hurting for the hero, then I was fuming I wanted to karate chop someone, then swoooooooon at times, there were also some parts I may not have 50/50 feelings about. BUT I have a couple of things I love the most about this book.

“The way you love her, is a thing of beauty”...

1. The love you read about in this book is beautiful. And hurtful. And lasting. And sometimes shaky. The love between brothers. Between friends. Between mother and daughter. Between father and daughter. Between the main characters and the people they hold dear to their hearts. I loved that! Don’t get me wrong, love can get you into fights, arguments, disagreements, and you mess up here and there etc etc... but you know that mostly it’s because you love them so much that you want the best for them and can only show it the way you know. But that does not mean it’s wrong... it’s all you know!!!

“Reese Cup... Yeah Mars Bars?... I love you.”

...

“Shut up! You’re makin’ this thing in my chest hurt.”

2. The relationships explored in this book is so amazing that it makes you want to evaluate yours... with family, with friends, with partners, with your children, nieces and nephews, siblings, everyone important in your life. Alden and CID’s relationship is one of the favourites. Alden and Luci is definitely up there. Alden and Reese. Alden and his boys!!! Seriously loyal, love fiercely, and will have your back to the ends of the earth. Alden and Charlee had a lot of road blocks... and it hurt me a little bit more.

“You’ll always be worth it, and I’ll never regret being a family”.
...

The different messages I’ve noticed in this book shows so much more than just romance... hurt, love, pain, judged, anger, lost, misunderstood, you can find them all in this book. The way I read this, I could feel the author’s heart woven within it. Don’t nit pick all the things you didn’t like about this book, but rather the beautiful lessons of weathering the storms of life.

Loved it.

“I would be lying if I said that I could live this life without you.”
-Brett Young

You will always remember your first love even if you never got the chance to tell them how you felt. Sometimes fate gives you a second chance and a teenage crush can lead to a connection you never knew existed.

Music soothes the soul and Alden has fond memories of playing his guitar down by the river, writing songs and thinking about his future. Now he plays in bars and clubs and is waiting for his big break, while spending time with countless women who love being with a country singer. None of them have ever meant anything to him until a familiar face with unforgettable blue eyes, walked into a club where his band was playing. Charlee Rae was even more beautiful then he remembered and he wouldn’t let her get away again.

Charlee Rae had a huge crush on Alden in high school but she moved away before she could get to know him. When she walked into the bar she heard his voice before she saw his face and she couldn’t believe, after all these years, that Alden was back in her life. Charlee Rae had never forgotten Alden but she wasn’t interested in being with someone who had women hanging around him all the time. She wants to be with someone she can trust and who will never leave her.

Alden was at the end of his rope and the only person he trusted to help him was Charlee Rae. She could give him the strength he needed to go on so he could plan for the future, which he prayed would include her. He would give up his music if he could have her in his life until the end of time.

Alden was born with music in his heart and he thought he knew the path his life would take. He didn’t foresee being a single parent, taking a break from music or falling in love. He couldn’t live his life without Charlee Rae because she was his soulmate and his reason for living. Leaona has given us a story that is full of passion, heartbreak and understanding that everyone will love and never forget.
