Background Information:
The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the relation of Tongans/ Tongan-Americans living in the Inland Empire to civic engagement, voting, and government at local, state, and federal levels. This study will also serve to answer questions around these topics.

Procedures:
If you agree to participate, we will ask you to participate in a survey at a MALO community event. You will be asked to answer roughly 15 questions about your background, your beliefs about government, and your questions. If you prefer to do this in another format, the survey questions can be asked orally in a focus group.

Risks and Benefits of Being in the Study:
We do not anticipate any risks for you participating in this study, other than those encountered in day-to-day life. Should discussion of these topics create emotional discomfort or distress, you can withdraw from the research and/or consider utilizing local resources to secure support (Community organizer/psychotherapist, Lourdes Arguelles, has offered low-cost therapy to our community partners - she can be contacted at at Clinebell Institute at (909) 451-3690 or
https://theclinebellinstitute.org/) The benefits for this study include: direct benefits, including the opportunity for voter
registration and to have your questions about government answered by a future community resource guide, and indirect benefits, as your answers contribute to a stronger understanding of how all levels of government interact with the Tongan community and what MALO can do to
support this.

Compensation:
There is no direct compensation for participation in this study.
Voluntary Nature of Participation: Your decision whether or not to participate will not affect your current or future relations with Pitzer College, CASA Pitzer, or MALO. During the interview and survey, you are welcome to skip any questions you do not feel comfortable answering. If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw at any time without affecting the relationships mentioned above or the ability to register to vote.
