Why this petition matters

Started by Amanda Scott

In 2013 the City of Mobile was ranked the most LGBT-friendly city in the state of Alabama. According to the Human Rights Campaign's Municipal Equality Index, Mobile scored a total of 21 points out of 100 points for reporting hate crimes statistics to the FBI, having a human rights commission, for public officials’ position on LGBT equality, and for engaging with the local LGBT community.

However, in Mobile, it is currently legal for employers to fire an employee for coming out as gay and an owner of a place of public accommodation to refuse to provide service to a same-sex couple that is getting married.

Mobile Equality, a coalition of LGBT and ally groups, is urging the Mobile City Council to adopt a comprehensive LGBT nondiscrimination ordinance in the City of Mobile prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity and expression in employment, education, housing, and places of public accommodation.
