An innovative project using theatre & the arts to support adult mental health, including the challenges of addiction & homelessness. New Vic Theatre’s Next Chapter will work with adults, particularly men, who wouldn’t usually consider theatre part of their lives but find their voices through art.

    Situation

In Stoke-on-Trent & North Staffordshire approximately 17% of our communities are living with a mental illness - leading to high levels of economic inactivity and high mortality rates from premature death due to addiction and suicide. Barriers to gaining help & support, such as poverty, homelessness & addiction, get in the way of people getting help for mental health issues. Often, taking the first steps in accessing help from support agencies is a barrier in itself. Together, we break barriers.

    Solution

We use theatre as a powerful tool to build relations with local people & engage them in a programme of growth to increase confidence and personal aspiration – aimed at understanding & articulating the obstacles & barriers people face in gaining access to services & increasing confidence around finding help. We create a safe space for people taking part, providing sustenance for hearts, minds & stomachs. Using creativity to develop practical roadmaps to better mental health for people in need.
