The Summit Adventure Trail west of Loveland is aptly named. Even if you dont make it to the summit of Sheep Mountain with its breathtaking view of the surrounding Big Thompson Canyon youre in for an adventure.

The trail winds uphill and around switchbacks, narrow in parts but with amazing views the entire stretch.

Locals often call the Summit Adventure Trail the Round Mountain Trail after the name of the trailhead, just west of Viestenz-Smith Mountain Park, across U.S. 34 in the Big Thompson Canyon.

Two trails branch off from the parking lot a 1-mile nature hike perfect for beginners and the climb up Sheep Mountain, suited for more advanced hikers.

Oddly enough, the commonly known Round Mountain Trail actually leads to Sheep Mountain, 4.75 miles mostly uphill.

The climb, which the Forest Service estimates will take three to four hours one way, gains 2,750 feet in elevation.

Although vehicles zip along U.S. 34 mere feet from the trailhead, and several groups hike the path almost every day, the trek feels like a solitary adventure with only butterflies and grasshoppers for company.

About two months ago, the trail closed to the public during a 76-acre wildfire. But Tuesday, runners, families, hikers and dog-walkers took advantage of the short drive out of Loveland and trip into the wilderness a true adventure.
