LAKAD: 5K FOR THE LUMAD

“Lakad: 5k for the Lumad” is an Earth Day walk-a-thon fundraiser for the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON) and its Adopt-A-Community Campaign. NAFCON is an alliance dedicated to advance and defend the rights and welfare of Filipinos in the US and the Philippines. The Adopt A Community campaign and project was launched last year on Earth Day, April 22, 2015 to take a stand for our environment, indigenous people, and build a water system for the Lumad or indigenous people of Talaingod, Mindanao, Philippines.

The Lumad of Talaingod are struggling to protect their ancestral lands and forests from the Philippine government and large multi-national logging and mining companies. The water system would provide 300 Lumad and their families with potable water for drinking, cooking, washing, and their daily needs. Above all, the water system would improve the overall health and welfare of the Lumad and help them further protect the environment and their ancestral lands.

In the spirit of the Lumad struggle, “Lakad (Tagalog for "walk”) 5k for the Lumad” will bring the international community together to protect the environment and support indigenous people in the Philippines. Join us as we strengthen our connections and stand with the Lumad!
