REMEMBRANCE IN ACTION

RESPONDING TO THE HOLOCAUST

IN TODAY'S WORLD

The community of Battle Creek, Michigan has proudly undertaken important initiatives designed to offer an educational enrichment experience for individuals while encouraging an equitable and inclusive environment.

Our goal has been to educate students and adults through integrative learning experiences and to build capacity for understanding and relating Holocaust history to our own experiences as 21st century Americans.  We are committed to fostering community awareness regarding the Holocaust and of the need to remain vigilant against discrimination, hatred, and persecution in our own time.

Events planned for fall 2022 have included an Art Center of Battle Creek display of dual mosaic art and newspaper archival exhibitions; a professional development workshop for educators; a "Peeks into the Past" Willard Library livestreamed panel discussion; and an opening reception on September 18, 2022 for both exhibitions coinciding with the premiere of the new film by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein, The U.S. and the Holocaust.

We are pleased to share recorded remarks from Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist and from Attorney General Dana Nessel given at the opening reception

We thank the Battle Creek Enquirer, Battle Creek Shopper News (p.4), Detroit Jewish News and WGVU Public Media for coverage of the Remembrance in Action project.

Michigan residents have been fortunate to be able to visit the Art Center to view The Holocaust Unfolds & From Darkness to Light: Mosaics Inspired by Tragedy

Funding for this project comes from a Ravitz Foundation Initiative for Small Jewish Communities grant awarded to Temple Beth El in Battle Creek. We are also grateful for support from The Detroit Jewish News Foundation; The Tree of Life Synagogue; and The Jewish Federation of Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan.
