This side event will examine the procedural and substantive nexus between the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Climate Agreement and human rights instruments. In particular the event will examine how existing human rights instruments can be used to monitor the SDGs and Paris commitments. The event will identify how existing expert and peer-review mechanisms mandated by the Human Rights Council and other UN bodies can strengthen accountability across these agreements. In doing so, we hope to compliment ongoing consultations about how international human rights commitments and accountability mechanisms can be integrated into the SDGs and Paris Climate Agreement to ensure that no-one is left behind.

EVENT OBJECTIVES:
-Examine the relationship between the SDGs, Paris Climate Agreement and international human rights instruments

-Identify how international human rights instruments can be utilised to monitor the human rights commitments enshrined in the SDGs and Paris Climate Agreement

-Present recommendations on how to link review mechanisms between UN HRC, HLPF, UNFCCC, including recommendations made during OHCHR’s recent Expert Meeting on Climate Change and Human Rights

-Share practical experiences from the country level about the potential to include a wide range of communities in delivery and monitoring of the SDGs and Paris Climate Agreement.
