The Strandloper Project coastal research expedition hike in October 2021 is a 165km coastal research hike from Ariniston to Grotto Beach, hermanus in the Southern Cape, South Africa.

This will be our third research expedition to survey plastic pollution and fishing debris along the coastline. To date we have hiked 415km between Stroms River and Blombos Nature Reserve, approximately 14% of the South African coastline.

For the 2021 coastal research expedition hike, our research team will hike approximately 165km over 13 days and will extend our taking our overall survey distance to 19% of the South African coastline.

Our team of volunteers will survey the shoreline for plastic pollution, fishing debris and snagged fishing tackle using our Dirty Dozen, Plastic Bottle, Nurdle density and incidental sighting surveys to assess the origin of plastic pollution and the threat of ghost fishing caused by plastic and fishing debris.

Survey data collected on Expedition 2021 will compliment our dataset of the previous expeditions and will be able to provide a comprehensive overview of waste management and fishing activities and can be applied for management processes by municipalities, conservation organizations and regional conservancies to protect marine biodiversity.

Funding raised on this platform will contribute to logistics and data analysis for our 2021 Coastal Research Expedition Hike.
