About this event

Spectra’s LGBTQ+ Inclusivity course is a hands-on program that provides training, information, and education for anyone wanting to develop and enhance their knowledge, skills and understanding of inclusive practice. Ensuring inclusivity within the workplace works towards improving mental health and wellbeing outcomes for LGBTQ people.

Our training is informed by 27 years of work within LGBTQ communities. Spectra’s training packages are peer led, which means that they are designed and delivered by staff who themselves identify under the broad umbrella of LGBTQ+. We aim to make each training bespoke to meet the specific aims of each specific organization, be that within healthcare, education, the charity sector, or private companies.

Training is led by qualified counsellors and offers a holistic and creative approach to learning and development. This is underpinned by Spectra’s core values of responsibility, professionalism, accountability, diversity, and inclusion. Our training is innovative and interactive, combining small and large group work, exercises and activities, case studies and facilitator-led learning.

This training will support you in:

  • Navigating language and definitions relating to children, teenagers, and/or adults who identify as LGBTQ.
  • Guiding you through recognizing the many and varied barriers and challenges that LGBTQ people experience on a social and political level- within workplaces, education, or healthcare settings, or at home.
  • Exploring topics such as the use of pronouns, different forms of discrimination, stereotyping and assumptions, hate crime, minority stress, intersectionality, marginalization, and the media.
  • Gaining a solid grounding in understanding identity formation which can be impacted by a variety of internal, external, hidden, or visible factors.
  • Finding creative ways to identify discrimination and make positive moves to challenge it in all forms.
  • Offering you greater insight into what it means to be truly inclusive and how to achieve this in practical terms.
  • Providing reading, signposting, resources, and sources of support for LGBTQ people.

Who should attend:

Therapists working with LGBTQ+ clients who want to improve their knowledge, awareness and confidence in working with this client group.

Please note that the training on 5th December might be delivered in person.

Spectra works to improve the choices, health and well-being of people, often from diverse and marginalised communities, empowering positive, informed choices about health, including sexual health, emotional resilience and wellbeing, and working with to combat isolation and risk.

We provide supportive, knowledgeable, non-judgemental services which are all peer led, meaning they are delivered by people from the communities we work with themselves. We are proactive in identifying the needs of all our clients and supporting them.

We aim for knowledgeable, aware and empowered individuals and communities who have clear, accurate, credible and non-judgemental wellbeing and health information and quality services that are relevant and accessible.
