How do I find electronic books available through UW Libraries? CompletedYesLauren (original creator)Explains how to search for e-books using the UW-only catalog. Please check w/ Jennifer Ward (jlward1@uw) and Linda DiBiase (ldiabiase@uw.edu) because the ebook situation is a moving target, especially with the Orbis-Cascade DDA pilot. At the end of the tutorial, when we suggest seeing a list of all of our E-book packages, we now need to say that from the Libraries home page, click on FIND IT, and then E-Books to see the list of packages. (instead of “click on more resources under “Find It” on the Libraries home page. And then, Electronic Books.”). Chat patron suggested adding information on ebooks in UW WorldCat (Summit and WorldCat owned ebooks are not available for wider usage and cannot be borrowed) 10-5-11http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AbVAvtD2xbiYZGd0ZGdzdDdfMThjeDk2OWd0Zw&hl=enhttp://guides.lib.washington.edu/content.php?pid=55083&sid=428176http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ByEaifMBGSoxv1 11/14/2008 v2 11/04/2009 v3 01/28/2010 v4 03/04/2011 v5 09/07/2012

What is Library Press Display?UnclaimedNoTo access: http://library.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/viewer.aspx This is pretty cool, it has newspapers from around the world where you can see the actual way it was printed. How do I put my course materials online? How do I make links to articles password protected so that I can share them with my class?UnclaimedNoSarah Weeks (OUGL)This tutorial is geared towards instructors (not students) who want to create quick links to materials for their students, but don't want to go through E-Reserves. Mary Van Court in the Health Sciences Library has recently created a guide for this here: but it is otherwise not publicized on our website. http://www.lib.washington.edu/services/course/linkingjournals.html

How do I find Tests and Measurements?UnclaimedNoNot sure a short tutorial is possible. We have a few different collections for finding mental measurements and educational or psychological tests. Health Sciences has a nice web guide for this, but I don't think it applies to our entire collection. http://healthlinks.washington.edu/howto/measurement/ and http://healthlinks.washington.edu/howto/measure.html If we do attempt this short tutorial, I think it should be focused on getting to the full-text of a test or measurement (instead of finding reviews of the test). Getting to the full-text of a test often involves contacting the publisher directly. There is the ETS (Educational Testing Service) Collection which is not mentioned on the Healthlinks page. http://catalog.lib.washington.edu/record=b4389312~S6. Our users can use this collection to get a "call number" and then search our microfilm collection. We would definitely want to talk to Laura Lilllard about this before attempting this tutorial.

How do I request a Summit item? CompletedYesLyndsey Runyan OUGL GSA 2011Information about how to search for, request, track, pick up, return, or cancel (a request for) a Summit item. Could include a map of Summit libraries, a brief description of what Summit is, and a brief reference to becoming adopted at a Summit library. Could also include a basic explanation of how "availability" works in the Summit catalog, and what to do if your Summit request fails. http://guides.lib.washington.edu/content.php?pid=55083&sid=1789290http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkUGVI_jnh4x5/9/2011

How do I request an Interlibrary Loan item?CompletedYesMargarete Walden Suzzallo 2010-2011Information about how to use Interlibrary loan to request books (not held by UW or Summit), and articles. How to request, track, pickup/download, renew, or cancel requests for material. Could also reference the Desktop Document Delivery service and mail to home services available to UW patrons for UW material. Would be good include the many paths one can take to ILL's door: 1) from the article databases 2) from UW WorldCat, and 3) filling out a web request form located at http://www.lib.washington.edu/ILL/ - as well as information about turnaround times and fees where applicable. http://guides.lib.washington.edu/content.php?pid=55083&sid=1925244http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUVEs8CL5KEx7/11/2011

Special Collections: On Demand Advanced SearchingIn ProgressConor CaseyI am trying to create on-demand tutorials for for Special Collections on the following areas:

-Using the catalog to constrain the location to special collections for searches

-Keyword vs browsing to use online finding aids

-Advance searching the digital collections

I imagine them as on-demand tutorials that we might be able to embed at the point of search.

How do I check in at the Special Collections?CompletedJoe Bopp (EO GSA 2011-2012), has been combined with the Nuts & Bolts of Special Collection tutorialConor's comments on Special Colelctions overview tutorial video:

The URL in the video is now inaccurate. The current URL is www.lib.washington.edu/specialcollections/.

I would suggest by repeatedly calling it the "Special Collections *Library*" in the video, it might confuse new users who are seeking archival or photographic primary source materials, which are a huge part of the collections. The print collections are rare and important, but for the most part non-unique. The archives collections are in many cases the rarest, most unique, and most valuable of our collections. It might be better to just call it "Special Collections" instead. It's actually to protect these high-value unique primary sources that we have most of the procedures outlined in the check-in procedures, though of course it protects the books as well.
