Overview
Introduction
In December 2018, a multi-state judgment was reached by the Office of Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich (“AGO”) and 49 states, including the District of Columbia, with Wells Fargo Bank N.A. to resolve allegations that Wells Fargo violated consumer protection laws. $400,000 of those settlement funds were set aside by the AGO for purposes of being distributed by the AGO Community Programs Fund to fund organizations that provide resources and training, including mental health training, for Arizona first responders and first responder professionals who are experiencing the effects of stress from traumatic incidents suffered in the line of duty. The funds are available in accordance with the 2019 – Fifty-fourth Legislature – First Regular Session, House Bill 2747, Section 124.
Purpose
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has reported that first responders are more likely than members of the general public to develop behavioral health problems, including depression and PTSD, as a result of exposure to trauma, life-threatening situations, and the physical strain of working long hours in the line of duty.
In order to assist the community in addressing this health concern, the AGO has earmarked $400,000 of the AGO Community Programs Fund for multiple, one-time grant awards of up to $100,000 each to support mental health programming and support services that will target first-responder professionals experiencing the effects of stress from traumatic incidents suffered in the line of duty.
The AGO is seeking well-established, experienced offerors to deliver mental health treatment, training and support services to first-responders needing assistance and resources to improve their mental well-being.
Program Description
Offerors may submit a grant application for the following programs:
- Case management services to assist first responders assess and access support and treatment resources for mental health and/or mental disorders/illness/stress they experience due to their work service.
- Traditional and/or alternative treatment and support programs to address mental illness and/or mental disorders/illness/stress experienced by first responders due to their work service.
The AGO expects to select Grantees that have extensive knowledge of trauma and stressor-related disorders; extensive knowledge of mental health provider organizations and resources in Arizona; and experience delivering evidence-based mental health services to adults with trauma and stressor-related disorders. Due to the limited amount of funding and limited timeframe, projects that can leverage this funding to create sustainable change in the risk level of the target population, move a community towards greater capacity to address mental health issues or expand an existing, successful program to reach a larger audience are encouraged to apply.
