Your COVID-19 vaccination

What to expect in Bolton

You’ll have heard about the COVID-19 vaccine which is being rolled out across the country. Led nationally by NHS England, this is the biggest vaccination programme our country has ever seen. Arrangements to get everyone vaccinated are moving very fast and are subject to many last minute changes. Those set to receive the vaccine have been placed in priority order. This has been decided by an independent advisory group called the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) which regularly advises health departments on immunisation issues, such as flu and most recently the COVID-19 vaccine.

These groups have been selected as they are considered to be at the highest risk of death should they contract COVID-19.

Your COVID-19 vaccination

Your questions answered

Where will I have my vaccination? When will I receive my vaccine? If you are in any of the nine priority groups you will be contacted by the NHS. When we know that a batch of vaccines is being delivered, you will be invited for your appointment. Your invitation may be by text, telephone or by letter and you could be asked to attend your own GP practice or another location.

Measures have been taken to keep you safe and to reduce the risk of infection, including social distancing, hand washing and sanitisation of equipment. Our GP practices are working very hard to get the vaccine to everybody who needs it, while at the same time dealing with other patients’ health concerns. If you need to contact your GP about anything other than the vaccine please do so in the usual ways. If you are waiting to hear about your vaccination, please wait to be contacted and try to avoid contacting them for updates. However, If you’re over 70 and not had your vaccination yet, you can book via www.nhs.uk/ covid-vaccination or contact your GP practice.

4

More vaccination sites have been introduced in order to provide you with a choice of where to get vaccinated. There are currently eight vaccination sites in Bolton, linked to a GP practice or pharmacy. Large sites can also vaccinate thousands of people each week and bring welcome extra capacity to the vaccination programme. You may have received a letter in the post giving you the option to attend a large site - up to 30 minutes’ drive away - such as the Bolton Wanderers site and the Etihad Centre in Manchester. You can take up this offer and book an appointment either via the online booking system or by phoning 119. If you prefer, you can wait until you’re invited by your local GP.

If you’ve already received your first dose, please wait to be contacted about your second. If you have an appointment arranged – please keep to those arrangements. You will be contacted soon if you haven’t received any invitation yet.

What to expect when you have your vaccine When it is time for you to receive the vaccine you may receive a text message, phone call or letter. This could be direct from your GP practice or a central NHS organisation. You’ll be given an appointment and it’s important that you arrive on time. While it’s tempting to turn up early, appointments are running to a strict schedule. This is so we can manage social distancing and help to minimise queueing or waiting. On arrival you will be greeted by a marshal who will take your details. Don’t forget your face covering! You will then go through a short medical screening process to make sure you’re fit to have the vaccine and you will be asked to give consent – to make sure you are happy to proceed with the vaccine.

The vaccination itself takes a matter of seconds – this will be done in the top of your arm. Depending on which vaccine you receive, you may be asked to take a seat in a waiting area for 15 minutes, for observation. Then you’ll be free to go!

Your COVID-19 vaccination

Your questions answered

How does the vaccine work? The vaccine encourages your body to make antibodies, which will be used to try and protect your body from the virus. Both of the current COVID-19 vaccines are ‘inactivated vaccines’, which means they cannot give you Covid. Vaccination will significantly reduce the chances of you catching the virus and becoming seriously unwell if you were to catch it.

Even if you’ve already had COVID-19, the vaccine will ensure that your immunity to the disease is as strong as possible.

Can I choose which vaccine I get? There are currently two vaccines available in the UK and both give very high protection against COVID-19 and the chances of getting seriously ill. Both require two doses, 12 weeks apart. The vaccine you are offered will very much rely on the type we are supplied with and we won’t necessarily know which vaccine we’ll receive until a day or two before. Our ultimate aim is to vaccinate as many people as possible within a short timeframe, which means there is no choice of vaccine.

Do the vaccines contain animal ingredients? Both vaccines that are currently being used, do not contain any animal ingredients or egg. Both vaccines are recommended by the British Islamic Medical Association: www.britishima.org The ingredients have been reviewed by regulators and ingredients on both vaccines can be found on: www.gov.uk/government/ publications/regulatory-approvalof-pfizer-biontech-vaccine-forcovid-19 www.gov.uk/government/ publications/regulatory-approvalof-covid-19-vaccine-astrazeneca

Remember... COVID-19 is spread through droplets breathed out from the nose or mouth, particularly when speaking or coughing.

It can also be picked up by touching your eyes, nose and mouth after contact with contaminated objects and surfaces. Approximately 1 in 3 people who have coronavirus have no symptoms and could be spreading it without realising it.

For more detailed information about the vaccine visit: www.nhs.uk/covidvaccination

Reminiscence Packs Bolton Library and Museum Service have produced a reminiscence pack with photographs of local places and events and questions to encourage connection through memories. The reminiscence packs have been designed for use with older people who may remember bygone Bolton and hopefully encourage people to talk about their lives and relive fond memories about family, friends, work and other experiences from their life. Each sheet has specific questions that will hopefully lead to more conversation about particular photographs. Reminiscence activities can help reinforce a person’s individuality and build their self-esteem, reminding them of past achievements and their life story. Packs have been distributed to care homes to allow the residents to look at the photographs and share memories with one another. There is also a pack in the Central Library available to borrow. If you would like a digital copy of the reminiscence pack to be sent to you by email, please contact us at abladmin@bolton.gov.uk

o o Celebrating LGBTQ History with the OUTing the Past Festival Bolton is a hub location for the festival, which took place in numerous cultural venues across the UK. The event formed part of the International Festivals of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans History celebrations, and featured speakers from all over the world showcasing the depth and breadth of the LGBTQ community, shining a light on LGBTQ history and raising the awareness of past attitudes and behaviours related to sexuality and gender.

Cllr Hilary Fairclough, executive cabinet member with responsibility for libraries and museums, said: “Bolton is known as a warm and welcoming place, somewhere which celebrates cultural diversity and the talent, fun and colour it brings to the town.

“We were delighted to be chosen as a venue to help celebrate LGBTQ history as understanding the past helps bring us together so we can all live in harmony and have a brighter and happier future.”

Pre-recorded Talks Bolton helped celebrate LGBTQ history with three pre-recorded talks, which are free to access online or via podcast:

Talk 1: Bev Ayre, ‘Before The Act’: The Night The Stars Came Out Against Section 28 ‘Before The Act’ was a seminal moment in LGBT history, bringing together stars from the worlds of theatre and music, with a group of Lesbian and Gay activists. Listen here:

Shopping & Paying Safely Online Although buying online is safe and secure, you always need to be cautious. Here are some tips to keep you safe:

Use a strong password for any accounts you set up

to Check out our ‘Online Shopping Guide,’ using Tesco as an example.

Use reputable companies

It’s recommended to use companies you already know and trust. If you’re unsure an online company is reputable, a quick Google search should help you, or you could reach out to friends, family and the online community through Avoid offers that seem too good to be true Facebook or Twitter.

This means using a combination of lowercase and uppercase letters, numbers and symbols to stop fraudsters accessing your accounts.

Make sure the website address begins with ‘https’ rather than ‘http.’

Any website that promises too much at too low a price is suspicious.

The extra ‘s’ indicates an added level of security and demonstrates that communications between the website and your browser are encrypted. If the website isn’t ‘https’ secure, don’t provide your credit card information.

26

Use your credit card rather than a debit card if possible.

In the unfortunate event your information is stolen, most credit cards provide two important benefits: firstly, many limit the amount of money for which you are responsible. Secondly, unlike debit cards, they don’t directly link to your financial accounts. Another great solution is to use a payment processor such as PayPal, which offers specific benefits and protections for the consumer.

CLICK HERE for a great reference resource created by the Government’s Cyber Security department.

CVs and Interviews

Sell Yourself into That Dream Job

I’m Suzanne, and one of my roles at Bolton College is that of a Job Coach. When looking for work, the first chance you get to wow an employer is usually through your CV. A CV is your chance to show an employer you are the best candidate for the job. It’s an advertisement of YOU and how wonderful you are. Many people are shy when it comes to writing a CV, and they miss mentioning important skills. For example, I see many CVs where the writer speaks more than one language, and yet this amazing skill is nowhere to be seen on their CV! Some of the common errors I have seen include: • Spelling, punctuation and grammar errors • Formatting errors - type of font, for example • Unprofessional email addresses, for example ilovejohntravolta@gmail.com • Too many pages • Not enough details given • Too much unnecessary information given

Having an updated CV means that when you see your dream job, you are immediately ready to apply. If you don’t have a CV, we can help. We deliver ‘Nail That Application’ courses, two three-hour sessions, where you will produce an employer-ready CV. We also look at application forms on this course, and we explain what employers are looking for when you send in your application form - it’s not just a case of writing how good you would be for the job – you have to give evidence, and we show you how to do this.

So you’ve secured an interview…what next? This is now your chance to back up what you’ve said in your CV and really sell yourself. Interviews can be frightening for many people, and this is usually because they have no idea what they are going to be asked. However, with a little preparation and an idea as to what employers might ask, you can give yourself the best possible chance of getting that job. We deliver ‘Nail That Interview’ courses, two three-hour sessions, where you will learn all about questions you might be asked and the best ways to answer them. We also give you a mock interview so we can give you feedback as to what you did really well and any areas you can develop. But our support doesn’t end there! We have lots of courses to help you find employment, and I have a mailing list where I send out details of jobs in the Bolton area on a regular basis, as well as any courses that may be coming up. I can also check over your CV before you send it to any prospective employers. For further information and support, please email me at suzanne.delaney@boltoncc.ac.uk

VOLUNTEERING as an NHS Community First Aid Responder Rob Anacreonte, Curriculum Leader for Community Learning at Bolton College, talks about how he became a Community First Aid Responder and his life in the role:

more highly-skilled ambulance crew arrives to take over treatment.

‘Community First Responders are volunteers who are trained to attend certain types of emergency calls in the area where they live or work.

‘For me, I wanted to undertake a role which is both challenging and rewarding and the satisfaction of becoming a North West Ambulance Service Responder really appealed to me - at home, I had a few spare hours and was looking to expand my skills.

‘Their aim is to reach a potential life-threatening emergency in the first vital minutes, before the ambulance crew arrives. They’ll help stabilise the patient and provide the appropriate care until the

32

‘There are many reasons to undertake a volunteer position: make friends; give something back to the community; gain essential employment skills; or use spare time to make a real difference.

‘The role’s tough and I’ve encountered many different situations, not always based on saving

someone’s life – although when this does happen, it’s a unique moment; I’ve received training to deal with crucial pressurised situations and I’ve immediately reverted to these processes and procedures. ‘When a person calls for an ambulance they are unwell, frightened and generally unsure of what is happening to them. Being able to reassure a patient, even when they are not seriously ill, is all part of the job. At times just talking to a person is all it takes; being able to listen is key in this role! ‘When attending situations, family members can be upset and panicked, so calming and reassuring them really helps the situation and the patient - they immediately look to you for support, so it’s not just about the person you’re treating. ‘Supporting a person in a calm manner whilst treating serious conditions is a great feeling, and stepping into someone’s life for a very short time can have the biggest impact. You need to be caring and calm under pressure – it could make the difference between life and death! ‘The application process is very rigorous and there are various stages before being accepted. It’s key that you complete your application in as much detail as possible; the NHS receives thousands of applications every year for this role, so standing out from the crowd is essential!

‘This role would suit anyone who’s really keen to work within the uniformed public services because it will give you a great insight into how things work.’ ‘Prior to applying, I felt a little rusty in my application and interview skills so I decided to enrol on the College’s ‘Nail that Application’ and ‘Nail that Interview’ courses with Suzanne Delaney, the Job Coach for Community Learning. It was great and really helped me to polish up my skills in preparation! You can read more about Suzanne, and how she can help you, on page 31. ‘To get a real feel for the role, I recommended watching ‘A Day in the Life of a CFR Responder’ Click here. Best of luck in your application! Learn more about our employment-ready courses by clicking here.

‘I spent two weeks completing my application to ensure it was perfect, returning to it frequently to re-read and edit, which is the most important part of the process because at this point, it’s either a yes from the service and you can move on to the next step, or a no! ‘The interview process is very comprehensive and focuses on competency-based questions. You’ll be tested on your capability to undertake the role and they’ll use the information from your personal statement to inform their decision. I was thrilled to pass! Then the more formal checks begin - DBS, references and health checks. ‘Once on board, you’re trained to deal with all types of scenarios and you’ll be taught to use a defibrillator. Working alongside other professionals is great and you’ll get a real sense of teamwork and come across people from all walks of life - no shift is ever the same!

Let’s Get

With spring on the horizon, now is a good time to start making plans for what you could grow in your garden, yard or even on your windowsill. Most common herbs are quite easy to grow and tend to be low maintenance, and they also add great flavours to most dishes and salads, as well as having a range of health benefits.

Feeling a little more adventurous? Why not have a go at growing your own vegetables! Now’s a good time to be sowing seeds, either indoors or out - potatoes, spinach, peas, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and onions can all be planted out doors from March onwards, or you could even start some seeds on your windowsill. Mushroom and vegetable cartons are ideal for sowing up your seeds and as well as costing nothing, are a great way of recycling. There are many benefits of growing your own: • • • • •

Access to fresh healthy veg, full of essential vitamins and minerals Cost effective Helps the environment by cutting down on plastic waste from food wrappers Gardening gives you access to fresh air, exercise and is great for wellbeing An engaging activity to do with children - you could even build in maths by asking children to measure the size of the plants at different stages in the growing process.

If you’re interested in finding out more about growing your own vegetables, enrol on one of our gardening/horticultural courses. We can also provide you with information about local community allotments in the area. Family Learning Team Hello from Bolton College’s Family Learning Team – we’re three teachers, here to support parents/carers/grandparents of primary school children. You can contact us on 07761 730 067 to access our new support service for advice and guidance on Monday, Wednesday & Thursday mornings, 10am-12pm, or you can email us at familylearning@boltoncc.ac.uk

Let’s go outside! Been in an open space with young children? The first thing they want to do is to break away from your hand and run! They are born with the desire to move and open space is exciting, with lots of learning experiences. Learning to move isn’t just about making muscles strong, it’s also vital for children’s growth and development. Movement is important and it requires lots of room! The space outdoors, in gardens, countryside, woodlands and parks provides children with so much of what they need to stimulate their minds and bodies.

Look for mini-beasts together. For example spiders, beetles, woodlice, ants. Look under stones, rotting tree branches or logs, on trees, under bushes. Where else do they live?

Make the binoculars before you go exploring outside together. Children enjoy creative activities and the binoculars will help to focus their eyes on specific areas. It makes learning more fun too!

Look at the websites... ...on page 39 for extra ideas and activities for all the family. Children need to be outside in Spring, just as much as they do in Summer. Make sure you have wellies and umbrellas for wet weather, warm clothes for cold, windy days. The children’s enthusiasm at being outside will soon help you enjoy being out in the different weather too. Being outdoors lifts everyone’s moods.

Remember! Time outdoors helps children to digest their food and have a good sleep from being physically tired. It will make them healthier, fitter and stronger. It’s a win-win for all involved, because it has the same effect on adults too.

Bolton St Catherine’s Academy

JOI FOR W

In the summer of 2020 the partnership between Bolton St Catherine’s Academy (BSCA) and the Manchester United Foundation began, where BSCA employed a Schools Partnership Officer, Holly Espie, from the MU Foundation to work full time with students within the secondary school. Despite COVID-19 presenting its many challenges, and stopping a lot of the key things that the MU Foundation would normally have been able to offer, the Schools Partnership Officer has already created a positive and proactive relationship with students, providing a variety of different interventions for them:

• Believe FC – a 6 week intervention looking at building confidence, improving behaviour, and setting long term targets and goals for the learners. • Boys 2 Men – a 6 week intervention working with the male learners at BSCA to look at their behaviour, how they are perceived by their friends, families and people around, and to set long term targets and goals. • Forward Thinkers – a 6 week intervention working with groups of female learners about confidence, behaviour, how they are perceived by others and creating long term targets and goals. • Mindfulness interventions. • Year group ambassadors – who will create social action projects to help benefit the school and the local community. • Virtual trips/enrichment days with other partnership schools, including a virtual Christmas party with games and prizes. • Afterschool activities - boys and girls football/futsal sessions. • Interschool and wider competitions with the other school partners at the MU Foundation. • £10,000 donation that has been spent on student resources and wellbeing packs for every student to help with their learning, engagement and wellbeing. Laptops have been given to some students without any devices so they can still learn from home. • 100 activity packs with useful resources for students to use at home. • Food hampers which were delivered to BSCA families in need of extra help at Christmas and during February and March to help feed their families with nutritious and filling food during these challenging times.

42

INS Manchester United RCES Foundation With Mrs Fairclough, our Year 8 Leader, has seen, “Holly build up some wonderful relationships with our students and proactively supports them around the school. The hampers and packs have been amazing and have allowed our families to keep going throughout this very difficult time. Students have also really appreciated the rewards and this has supported our school values to strive for excellence.”

MU Foundation has also involved the whole BSCA community, and this month has challenged students, parents and staff, and their families to get moving more and enter the Travel to Tokyo competition in partnership with TeamGB and ParalympicsGB. BSCA have been entered against all of the other partner schools to see who can complete the most activities to reach Tokyo first by logging their activity each day. Everyone is getting involved, moving more and having fun whilst they do it!

Holly told us: “It has been a challenging and enjoyable start to the partnership that has had a good impact on the school and the learners despite these challenging times.”

She continues: “There are many more opportunities to come through the MU Foundation with the MU Foundation Disability Co-ordinator booked in for a full day for 6 weeks to work with learners, school holiday camps that will be run by MU Foundation and BSCA staff for current BSCA learners and the ones due to start in September. Along with lots more prizes, and hopefully trips to Old Trafford.” Rachael Lucas, Head Teacher, is delighted with working with the Foundation so far: “We really value the contribution that Holly has made so far to our students and the Foundation have been brilliantly supportive of what we are trying to achieve here at BSCA. We certainly are #strongertogether. We look forward to many more fruitful years working together and seeing the partnership grow and develop.”

#MACFESTBOLTON2021 MACFEST - Muslim Arts & Culture - is an international Festival that brings Muslim and non-Muslim communities together, promoting social inclusion and overcoming barriers.

SAVE THE DATE !

Calling all Muslim artists and aspiring artists! Are you creative in the arts? If you have a passion for poetry, photography, calligraphy, history, heritage, culture, architecture, performing a nasheed/naat or playing an Islamic instrument, MACFEST 2021 needs YOU! We’d love to hear from you if you can link any of these skills to what it’s like living in Bolton and being a Muslim. Additionally, can you tell us: • • • •

What was Eid and Ramadhan like during lockdown? If you’ve faced hate crime and Islamophobia. How you’ve coped with births, marriages and deaths. If you’ve done anything to help others in need, such as help in a foodbank.

To coincide with Refugee Week in June, we’d also like to know what welcome you received whilst moving to, and living in, Bolton as an Asylum Seeker and a Refugee. For the The Great Get Together, tell us about issues that are common to us, rather than those that divide us. Plus, what’s really friendly about Bolton as a place to live? Also look out for activities at the Octagon Theatre involving Muslim artists.

Sunnyside club

Our cornerstone is to act as an umbrella organisation which recognises and supports volunteer and community groups who look after the environment in Bolton.

We want to seek out these groups and like-minded individuals to form a network to promote our aim of making Bolton a cleaner and greener town for all its residents.

From its beginnings in 2016, Bolton Green Umbrella has donated almost £25,000 to its registered groups from grants given by Bolton Council, and we now have over 100 groups registered on our website. There are litter pickers, community gardens and allotments, schools and young people’s groups, conservation groups and more. Bolton College Foundation Learning ECO Group is an instance of young people already getting involved, and there are fantastic opportunities for young people to join in with these efforts to improve our environment in Bolton in many different ways - the Climate Emergency is of major concern to young people, and you really can make a difference.

There are many benefits to volunteering:

Volunteering in outdoor activities is wonderful for physical and mental health and wellbeing, and also gives you a sense of achievement.

Some of the conservation groups can offer training opportunities, teaching you new skills like woodland and wildlife skills.

Being a volunteer can also be a big help when job hunting, proving to a prospective employer that you are a willing worker and you care about the world around you.

Check out the Bolton Green Umbrella website here www.boltongreenumbrella.org.uk/local-groups to find out what’s going on in your neighbourhood and get in touch via the group’s contact details – you’ll be given a warm welcome!

C E N S U S S U N D AY : 2 1 s t M a r c h 2 0 2 1 We’re asking households across Bolton to get ready to take part in the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Census, which takes place on Sunday, 21st March. Letters have been sent, with your unique access codes, and we’re looking forward to receiving your responses. Results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations. Operating in line with the Government’s latest Covid-19 guidance, field officers will be deployed across the country to contact those who have not responded; they’ll offer help and advice to those who need it, whilst also reminding people that their Census response is required by law. To complete your Census, and to find out how you can get help, visit:
