NEWS AND HOW IT AFFECTS YOU- Credit / NO Credit and all-online-learning for Q4

The STATE superintendent- our superintendent's boss - put this out: "Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year. This is in no way to suggest that school is over for the year, but rather we should put all efforts into strengthening our delivery of education through distance learning."

We are grading for quarter 4 work, and it will all be online.

We are going to Credit / No Credit for Semester 2 grades, it seems.

And one thing you all need to know is that Credit / No Credit does NOT mean Pass /Fail.

Credit / No Credit means that you have to hit "standard competency" in each class to gain credit: typically that is a C or higher. We haven't gotten clear info on what this means for you yet and us as a school.

Which means, potentially, a C- could be NO CREDIT. So here's what it means for YOU the student: You need to hop onto Aeries, check your grades, and go to the teacher classrooms of ANY class where you have less than a solid B-. And get that work done. Don't worry about it being "late" or not, in this online transition deadlines are a bit mushier than normal. Just get the work done, MAKE SURE to hit the teacher's office hours online if they have it, check in routinely on google classroom or whatever. Plus, the content online is like 3hrs/ week, which is way less than you would traditionally have to deal with if we were in classes 5 hours a week + homework.

From OUR superintendent:

Dear PUSD Students, Families, Staff, and Community,

Today the Governor released more information regarding the closure of campuses. We will continue to do what is best for the health and safety of our students, staff, families, and community.

Based on that information and our own local discussions, we are planning to remain in distance learning for the remainder of the school year. Here is an update for our students and seniors.

Grades:

· We will use a credit/no credit system for our secondary grades for the spring semester. We will work with all of our high school students to make up any past failures through credit recovery, with an emphasis on our graduating Seniors. Colleges and Universities (Including UC and CSU) have stated they will accept “credit” or “pass” for coursework. This will not be included in the calculation of high school GPA. The State will put out more guidance later today on grades and graduation and we will send out more details based on that information.

Seniors/Graduation:

· We are committed to having graduation ceremonies for PHS and Black Diamond. If we are unable to have them on our scheduled dates, we will adapt and schedule them when it works. For PHS, we have the reservation at the Concord Pavilion and if that date is not possible then we will arrange another date with them if possible or we will have it at Pirate Stadium with live steaming in the CAB and homes. For Black Diamond, we have the date reserved for the CAB and we will simply change that date if needed. We WILL have graduation ceremonies!

· The same applies for the Prom. While we will not be able to have the Prom scheduled for May 9th, we will schedule an alternative date when we are able if the students would like that. You will receive a refund for any tickets purchased.

Distance Learning:

· We are working on our plan to checkout our Chromebooks at each site, starting with the high schools this week. Please remember to complete the tech survey for our family.

· I am happy to hear the State is partnering with Google and other companies to provide more internet access points and devices. I will pass on that information as we receive it. I have already submitted the info for this for our District.

· Thank you to all of our teachers and students and families who have been working so hard to adjust to this new way of teaching and learning. We will send out more details on this.

Thank you all. I appreciate the dedication and commitment of everyone. There is nothing more important than the health and safety of our students, families, employees, and communities. I know we are in a new and challenging situation, both personally and professionally. We will get through this together. Learning will happen. The sacrifices everyone is making will result in more lives being saved.

Take care of yourselves and each other.

Janet

While we work through this, I want to remind you all that I know there are difficult circumstances that may make it difficult to work on your schoolwork. I also want you to take this time to learn skills you don't always get to focus on:

Learn to sew, change oil, cook, clean, take care of pets, first aid, create crafts, plant a garden if you can.

Use youtube to learn skills you would never get to normally: painting, singing, home decor, mapmaking, etc.

Make sure you are getting outside - or at least SUNLIGHT and fresh air - for a couple minutes a day, please!

Make sure you are taking care of your physical and mental health, and eating at least 2x a day - check the school districts facebook, instagram, and website for how to access food services.

Take the time to learn your family history, traditions, and medical history. If your parents and grandparents speak a language you do not, now is a good time to learn at least a bit.

Take the time to read - I don't care if it's fiction or not, manga, fanfiction, or romance novels - but you need the time for imagination and visualization, and watching it instead will PREVENT you from growing critically.

Watch the news, pay attention to what is said and is NOT said, and politics. This world will be yours someday, and you need to know HOW it works politically, socially, and environmentally.
