Why this petition matters

Started by Ella Gupta

At 16 years old, I cannot drive on public roads without a driver’s license and a minimum of 50 hours of driving practice. So, why should I be allowed to take the wheel of my financial life with little to no education?

As of 2021, only 8 states (Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, and Virginia) guarantee every high school student access to a semester-long personal finance course prior to graduation. I’m so happy that my home state of North Carolina is on this list, but what about all the students attending high school in states that aren’t on the list? They deserve to learn about banking, saving, spending, fintech apps, taxes, responsible borrowing, investing, and more critical money topics like these! Ignorance about these topics comes at a great cost and we must refuse to sit around and let another generation repeat the mistakes of previous ones.

Gen Z students are guaranteed access to biology, chemistry, and algebra classes in school. It’s about time we get guaranteed access to a personal finance course as well!

Being financially capable at a young age can save us money throughout the rest of our lives, as we’ll know how to avoid costly mistakes. Personal finance instruction enables us ALL to make informed choices with our money and set ourselves up for a secure financial future, so join the movement to get #FinEdforALL

Teens who are interested in becoming ambassadors should click here to learn about that program. We are currently accepting 50 ambassadors for the Fall of 2021.
