Locutions (The Loved Object)

Katherine Bowman's new work examines the way we imbue objects and artefacts with meaning. Through a series of small box like vessels, themes of containment, secrecy, talismanic power and personal mythology come together to create a collection of mysterious and quiet pieces that draw the viewer in like a small poem. Pulling inspiration from sources as diverse as Federico Garcia Lorca, Jean Baudrillard and Nick Cave, these intricately decorated boxes not only provide a secret space to carry one's true self but a shelter for the vulnerable heart and the spirit animus.

To be opened by Ramona Barry, Chair of Craft Victoria, artist, writer and curator.

Making Sense

Making Sense combines the work of two practitioners concerned with political investments in the ecological conundrum. The conceptual challenge presented within this exhibition focuses on four central questions: how has science changed the way we view nature? How has this heightened ecological awareness changed our world view? How do contemporary artists communicate ideas of such complex magnitude? How can craft materials be used in innovative ways to discuss ethereal constructs of nature such as the ozone and species decline?

Video: Debbie Symonds' video work Tracking will be shown daily at Federation Square as part of the Urban Screens program.

To be opened by Kit Wise, Dean Teaching & Learning, Department of Fine Arts, Faculty of Art & Design, Monash University.

Il Cimento

Il Cimento by Pam Stadus is a new video-based work exploring the effects of steam, fog, condensation and thermal shock on glass. A group of glass vessels sit behind a transparent pane; they slowly recede from view as gaseous vapours of condensation fill the foreground. Eventually the glass pane begins to crack, evoking the aerial views of shattered Antarctic ice shelves affected by global warming. A marked departure from Stadus' previous work in cast glass, Il Cimento is a slow meditation on the propensity of glass to subtly register changes in environmental conditions.

To be opened by Elaine Miles, artist.
