PRESERVE ACCESSIBLE PERFORMANCE SPACE IN PITTSBURGH

About Us

The Glitterbox Theater is an accessible art space where outsiders, dreamers, artists, and activists can build community and seek change. Our goal is to provide a long-term home for member artists as well as space for emerging artists. We host a broad variety of events, including plays, concerts, dance parties, drag shows, burlesque, educational workshops, poetry readings, stand-up comedy, film screenings, art shows, and craft markets.

As Pittsburgh develops a 21st Century economy and venue rentals increase their cost, the need for affordable and accessible spaces is timely. Glitterbox secures a space for artists and organizations to pursue creativity and build strong communities.

The NEW Glitterbox Theater

We need YOUR HELP to ensure the Glitterbox remains a unique asset for years to come. A new home, in a promising new building is being re-established for the Glitterbox in West Homestead. Already, monthly events have been hosted with great success! With this relaunch, Glitterbox plans to convert from an LLC to a 501c3, and from a volunteer organization to a worker-owned cooperative. But we need our Glitterbox community to make this vision a reality!

About This Campaign

The Glitterbox Theater is raising funds to complete much-needed renovations of existing bathrooms and exterior building doors to safely and comfortably accommodate its audience occupancy. Without these necessary enhancements, Glitterbox will be unable to continue operating in this space and will likely cease to exist. This campaign will make these necessary construction updates, allowing Glitterbox to move forward to legitimacy as a 501c3 worker-owned cooperative.

Our Organizational Model

The Glitterbox alleviates the burdensome cost of event space through low rental rates for hundreds of performers and dozens of organizations. In exchange, Glitterbox charges a small portion of event income, with artists keeping the majority of proceeds.

Our internal, volunteer organizing structure ensures low operating cost. The Theater is run democratically by a core group of committees, which engage a wider community of volunteers and members.

We are dedicated to maintaining diversity and inclusion. We aim to be queer normative. This includes being a haven for marginalized and oppressed people, as well as a space where challenging and difficult ideas can be explored. We ultimately strive to build understanding, kindness, connection, and solidarity from which we can create a better world for ourselves and others.

The History of Glitterbox

The Glitterbox Theater began as a nomadic collective of event performances, hosting in affordable community spaces and centers throughout Pittsburgh. After building a sizable following, the Theater found a home in North Oakland's Blumcraft Building. Between 2017-2020, Glitterbox successfully hosted over 1,000 events at this location until closing due to the pandemic.
