is rogue waves — the increasingly frequent disruptions caused by the collision of individually manageable social, economic and technological trends. He shows how the performance of companies of all sizes improves when they consider the role of resilience in their growth strategy and persuasively argues that it is a statistical certainty your organization is more likely to face disruption than to be the disruptor. This isn’t a bad thing, as Brill shows, “more billionaires are minted in financial downturns than upturns.” The issue isn’t upheaval, it’s whether you can, “flip your kayak faster than your competition” to take advantage of it. So why do organizations—likely your organization—ignore this obvious fact. Most books of this sort ask the question but skirt around the answer.
I appreciated how Brill provided dozens of practical, step-by-step tools and frameworks for making change in your organization. These frameworks are applicable whether you are a manager or the CEO.
As the title promises, you’ll walk away knowing how to survive and profit from radical change by turning disruption into opportunity. Great read.
For context, Rogue Waves briefly touches on the many sources of disruption; however, the value is in the bulk of the book that is about how to understand change, anticipate change, and to capture the opportunity to build value. For humans, change can represent the unknown and be scary. Yet, opportunity is always derived from change with the rewards going to the visionaries. The frameworks in Rogue Waves are a comprehensive model for understanding disruptive change and serve as a catalyst for both visionary thinking and action. The tools and frameworks that Jonathan details should be in the toolbox of any visionary strategic thinker.
His use of the metaphor "rogue wave" describes what others have called "uncertainty," something that falls outside the bounds of traditional risk management. Uncertainty was first identified (as far as I know) by the economist Frank Knight about 100 years ago, and is a highly relevant topic today. Knight's work distinguished risk from uncertainty by hypothesizing that unlike risk, uncertainty cannot be measured.
And to paraphrase Drucker (I think), that which cannot be measured cannot be managed. Well, uncertainty must be managed, even as it appears in the form of a catastrophic rogue wave. The ongoing covid-19 pandemic is the classic contemporary manifestation of uncertainty; just as Monty Python's merry jokesters didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition, nobody today expected Covid-19.
But here it is and here we are. Brill's book equips up with a worldview and some tools to get a grip on uncertainty, while enabling your company to survive and profit in the process. I've been doing a lot of work in this field recently (for what it's worth) and can recommend this book based on my own experience.
