I'm Samantha Murphy.  I sing and write songs for a living.  I want you to support me as the new Executive Director of SoundExchange.

Most artists aren't aware that SoundExchange has been given the right to collect all royalty payments from online and satellite radio sources.  Regardless of whether you've signed with them or not.  Unlike BMI and ASCAP, they have no competitor.  The government has declared SoundExchange the sole collectors of all payments owed to artists and copyright holders.

Many artists agree that, in practice, SoundExchange has been a disaster.  SoundExchange claims to not be able to find 20% of the artists they represent.  This doesn't even include the thousands of artists they don't represent, but have been collecting money for for the last 10 years.  Questions about money owed to us are buried and ignored.   Earlier this year, SoundExchange even announced a balance of $200 million in outstanding royalties.  This money belongs to us.

For too long, artists have relied on others to make sure we are paid the money we need to live. But now we are living in a new age.  It's time for artists to take control of our careers, our finances and our lives.  We need a transparent organization controlled by us, not by major record labels who have never had our best interest in mind.

If I become president of SoundExchange, here is my commitment to you.  I promise to create a transparent organization, where we are open and honest with what we are doing with your money.  I promise we will spare no effort in locating every musician that we are obligated to pay. And I promise that I will make SoundExchange finally work, so that musicians like you and me get what we are owed.

If you agree that SoundExchange needs to start working for artists like us, please sign my petition here.  I look forward to your support.

Artist Samantha Murphy is a pioneer in the field of music technology. A strong advocate of keeping the Internet free and open, Samantha was one of the very first music podcasters in early 2005 when she launched SMtv, now re-branded as The Highway Girl, a traveling music show for the digital age. She created the show to give artists a way to reach fans directly without the need for record companies.

Google singer songwriter and the first name you’ll find is Samantha Murphy. For over five years, Samantha has been establishing herself as not only a singer songwriter, but also the place to go to hear other great singer songwriters. With her popular web TV show The Highway Girl, Samantha features a different artist from a different city and venue each week as she tours. Past guests include Juliette Lewis, Aimee Mann, Martha Wainwright, Juliana Hatfield, Teitur, Inara George and Jonatha Brooke.  The HIghway Girl is one of the first channels on the Roku Player, which enables you to watch it on your TV.

Samantha is in demand as a speaker and has moderated and been a panel member at many conferences such as the Consumer Electronics Show, SXSW, Digital Music Forum West, Future of Music Coalition Summit, College Broadcaster’s Inc. and MEISA’s National Conference. She has taken part in symposiums on behalf of Princeton University and has been quoted in major press publications such as Conde Nast’s Portfolio.com and NPR.

Samantha’s independently released debut CD, somewhere between starving & stardom, was chosen as a top 10 for Village Voice’s Annual Pazz & Jop Poll by Michael Ross, who calls it “…a perfect pop record.” The album contains an all star band including the rhythm section from Alanis Morissette’s multi-platinum debut Jagged Little Pill. Performing professionally since she was six years old, Samantha has worked with Willie Nelson, Michael McDonald, Five for Fighting and Kylie Minogue as well as having appeared on TV shows such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Samantha's latest endeavor is The Highway Girl, an Internet TV show on the convergence of music and technology. The company was accepted into the prestigious Techstars program in Boulder, CO in 2008.  She was mentored by executives from Google, Yahoo, Wordpress and others.

Samantha’s latest single “Days Like This”, Produced by Martin Terefe (KT Tunstall/James Morrison), is pre-loaded into RCA’s entire new line of MP3 players, shipped to Wal-Marts across the USA and Canada and is available for DRM-free MP3 download from her site. She is currently recording her follow up release with Producer Ray Kennedy (Lucinda Williams/Steve Earle).
