Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum

Feature Exhibit: 16th Quilt Nihon

The Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum is excited to be one of four museums in the United States to host the Quilts Japan: 16th Annual Quilt Nihon exhibition. This outstanding exhibit will be on display from March 27th - June 22, 2024.

The Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum is the exclusive southeastern host for this celebrated exhibition, which premiered at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum before traveling internationally. It features the most extraordinary and innovative works from the biennial competition of the Japanese Handicraft Instructors' Association (JHIA), which sponsors the largest international quilt contest in Japan and one of the most prestigious in the world. This year’s Quilt Nihon Exhibition features 50 award-winning works, including traditional and modern quilts, along with 13 entries from the competition’s newest category, miniature quilts.

For 50 years, the JHIA has promoted handcrafted arts in Japan by educating and training instructors in eight specialties: quilt making, knitting, embroidery, lace making, painting, weaving, leatherwork, and flower art. The JHIA boasts 7,000 certified quilt instructors among its 12,000 members. Their biennial Quilt Nihon Exhibition is a must-see for quilt aficionados who marvel at the complexity of these master works, as well as first-time visitors who simply appreciate their beauty.

The Southeastern Quilt and Textile museum is proud to be able to bring a small sampling of the Japanese Handicraft Instructors' Association works to Georgia and looks forward to connecting the public with this outstanding exhibition.

  • Korhogo cloth is an African textile made by hand painting designs on hand woven and hand spun cotton fabric. The paintings are done using a specially fermented mud-based and natural vegetal pigment that darkens over time. They are decorated with symbols of humans, natural elements like the sun, moon and stars and animals. The Senufo use the cloth as a shield against vengeful spirits. Women spin the cotton into yarn and prepare the dye while men weave and decorate the cloth.

Beth Ann St. George is a Folk Artist, who uses Korhogo cloth as central pieces of her modern textile art. While she is fascinated with the stories of Korhogo, she does not alter the Korhogo beyond the quilted stitching and an occasional button or bead. The ragged edges are left visible. She uses these pieces to educate people about the meanings of the symbols of the Korhogo cloth.

    March - May of 2025
