SoJust Survey 2012
Socializing for Justice is not a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We're a grassroots volunteer-run, member-supported, cross-cultural, cross-issue progressive community that's been growing steadily since August 2006. We have 1800+ members, hosted 100+ events and manage an online hub of progressive events and resources at www.sojust.org.

SoJust hosts events that draw progressives of all stripes that share common values but may work on different issues. We host monthly socials that allow for the possibility of cross-cultural, cross-issue connections and run a monthly Skillshare Series, hosted by The NonProfit Center*, which increases our individual capacity for movement building.

We also have several projects: SoJust STARZ, Campus2Community, Progressive Voter Index, Event Promotion Resources and the Venue Directory. In 2013 we'll launch the SoJust Fellowship Institute. Brief descriptions of each project are available at the bottom of this survey.

Through SoJust we have met some truly amazing people. We're grateful that you’re taking the time to read and respond to this survey. Aside from your name and the 1st question, none of the questions are required. Filling out additional responses will help guide the planning of SoJust in 2012.

Please write your name: *
Please list organizations or campaigns you are affiliated with. Share anything else you'd like about your background or experience as it relates to building a progressive community in Boston.
Please review this survey to become more familiar with SoJust's work and then let us know what part of our work is most important to you. *
Now please take a few moments to look at "Pages" tab at the top of the homepage at www.sojust.org and "Read more about us" link on the left (watch the video!).
Based on the website, what would you say was SoJust's mission, vision or philosophy? Do you feel the website conveys that clearly? What edits would you recommend to make it clearer?
Did you learn anything new about what SoJust is all about from reading the website?
Now let’s focus on diversity.
Do you feel the website language is inclusive and welcoming? How could the language on the website be improved to broaden the audience that would feel invited?
For instance, we recently added "cross-cultural" to our mission statement: Socializing for Justice is building a cross-cultural, cross-issue progressive community, network and movement in Boston.
Now let’s look at the Calendar: www.sojust.org/calendar
First check out the past events tab on the top of the page. What were your favorite SoJust events? Why? If you haven't attended an event yet, why do you think that is?
What event activity would you suggest? Particularly with an eye towards being inclusive and welcoming to progressives of all stripes.
One of the goals of SoJust is to be a passport to progressive events in the Boston area by cross-posting social justice events on our Calendar. Looking over the last few months, do you see any particular trends of the kinds of events and/or issues that are represented?
Are there issues or organizations that you think should be included on the Calendar? What are they? Please include a listserve or website where we can find future events to add.
Using meetup.com we're limited to only allowing organizers to post events to the Calendar. Are the instructions (on the "read more about us" link on the left side of the homepage and under the Pages tab on the top of the page) for posting events to the calendar clear? How could they be improved?
You can share these instructions: http://bit.ly/post2SoJust
Have you ever posted an event on the SoJust Calendar?
Have you used the Calendar to find events to attend?
Have you recommended the Calendar to others looking for events to attend?
Now let’s look at the Message Board: www.sojust.org/boards
Have you used the message board?  What have you used it for (e.g., jobs, volunteer opps, roommates, resources, etc.)? Is the Message Board easy to navigate?  How could it be improved?
Have you recommended the Message Board to others looking for jobs, volunteer opps, roommates, resources, etc.?
SoJust Projects
Over the last 5+ years, SoJust has launched several projects. Read on for brief descriptions of each project and let us know if you'd like to focus your energy on any of them.
SoJust STARZ
The Organizer Team consists of SoJust Co-Founder & Co-Organizer Robbie Samuels and Co-Organizer Alison Brill. We're also fortunate to attract talented interns who volunteer 20 hours a week to keep SoJust humming. We could not possibly host over a hundred welcoming and friendly events without the help of our regulars, whom we call the SoJust STARZ. They are expected to arrive early at events to greet newcomers and welcome everyone into the space. Outside events they are SoJust ambassadors, sharing resources and promoting events.

We have over 60 STARZ now. Each year, they are invited to our Visioning & Retreat, 2 planning dinners and 3 STARZ-only potluck socials. Want to be more involved with SoJust? Anyone who attends 3 events in 3 months is recognized as one of the SoJust STARZ. After 3 events we feel attendees help create the culture and we want to ensure that regulars continue to contribute to SoJust events being known as extremely welcoming and friendly - not cliquey.
Campus2Community
Campus2Community is an inclusive, multi-issue network of progressive faculty and staff in the Greater Boston area. We facilitate inter-departmental and cross-campus collaboration among faculty and staff. We support progressive student groups by connecting them with like-minded community-based organizations and other student groups across campuses in the area.

Our next Happy Hour for Progressive Faculty and Staff is on Thursday, February 23. Learn more and RSVP at www.C2Cnet.org or search Campus2Community on meetup.com.
Do you plan to get involved with Campus2Community in 2012?
Progressive Voter Index

Since we're not a 501(c)(3), we could do our own endorsements, but as a network we believe in the power of amplifying the voices of our community.

SoJust hosts the Progressive Voter Index:
   * To show our support of candidates who are progressive across a range of issues, because we believe in the strength of cross-issue movement building.
   * To create support for progressives who run for office, in the hopes that more progressives will run for office.
   * To make it easier for progressives voters to know how their preferred candidate fares on other social justice issues.
   * To be able to hold elected officials accountable as a cross-issue progressive community, by not just focusing on a single issue.
   * To actively engage the 1800+ SoJusters by connecting them with progressive political campaigns.

Check out this past Election Day endorsements at www.ProgressiveVoterIndex.com. Help us spread the word during next year's elections.

Event Promotion Resources
As we mentioned earlier, we cross-promote social justice events on the SoJust Calendar. Post your event following these instructions: www.bit.ly/post2SoJust.

We post SoJust events on a dozen or more web calendars and listserves - up to 40 when we're promoting our larger events. We share this list with our members and progressive organizations to help them promote their events. The list is a mix of progressive and mainstream websites. We hope sharing this resource will make it easier for everyone to learn about your events, therefore strengthening the progressive community in Boston. Here's the list: www.bit.ly/BostonCalendars.

Has your organization used this list to promote your events? Please let us know the name of your organization.
Venue Directory
Do you know a venue in Boston that would host progressive/activist meetings or events? Please fill out the information at www.bit.ly/VenueLeads and we'll update the list at www.bit.ly/BostonVenues with your suggestion. Help us build a stronger progressive movement in Boston by sharing leads on great venues for meetings and events with speakers.

HEY VENUE OWNERS/ADMINISTRATORS: Are you open to hosting progressive activist groups and non-profits? This list will be viewed by leaders of the myriad progressive organizations in Boston. Fill out your venue info and get some free advertising!
Does your organization have a venue list that you'll share with SoJust?
SoJust Fellowship Institute
This is a new project that is still in the concept stage. 10 experienced community leaders and organizers, working on a variety of issues, will be accepted into the inaugural class in 2013. Fellows will have the capacity and confidence to teach a 90 minute skillshare training on one of 10 topics. Each month fellows will meet for 5 hours, participate in 2 skillshares taught by one of their peers and eat a meal together. The purpose is to strengthen leadership skills, while building stronger relationships among a diverse group of community leaders and organizers. Applications will be available in Fall 2012.
Would you be interested in applying for this Fellowship? Do you want to recommend someone?
As the button says, "I'm SoJust".
How can SoJust help you or be a resource for you (in your work and/or personal life)?
How would you like to support SoJust's growth? If you've benefited from this cross-issue progressive network, please contribute the suggested annual membership fee of $25. You may do this online at www.sojust.org/dues or at any of our events. Thank you for helping us continue to provide a space for like-minded progressives of all stripes.
