Some commonly asked questions regarding the Srimad Bhagavad Gita:

Do I need to go for a detailed interpretation when reading the Bhagavad Gita for the first time?

What is the best and most effective way to read the Bhagavad Gita?

Why should I study the Bhagavad Gita?

Did you know how much time it takes to read through the English translation of the complete Srimad Bhagavad Gita?

Reading the Srimad Bhagavad Gita and studying the Srimad Bhagavad Gita are two entirely different things. However, the very feeling one attains after having simply read the great scripture is so great that it will empower, enable, and drive a seeker to start studying it.

The table on the right shows that the time it takes to read the translation of the supreme scripture is almost the same as that spent watching a feature film. The difference is that one read of the SBG can change a person’s whole life for the better, while a feature film will not.

The Srimad Bhagavad Gita in English
Retold by Tavamithram Sarvada:
EBook containing all the Shlokas of the Gita in Sanskrit, along with Romanised Transliteration in Simple English

May the Teachings of Bhagavan Krishna through the Srimad Bhagavad Gita be the shining lamp of wisdom in your life and fill it with abundant Divine Blessings.

Tvameva maataa cha pita tvameva--

The three to four hours you spend reading the translation of all the 700 verses can be the most important investment of your time you will ever be making in your life.

Regardless of whether you understand the teachings of Krishna or not, the moment you complete reading the Srimad Bhagavad Gita once, you will feel drawn to read it again and again.

Reading the Srimad Bhagavad Gita regularly helps the seeker learn to interpret the Divine teachings of Krishna and apply the knowledge in real-life situations thus making life more enjoyable, fulfilling, successful, and peaceful. The knowledge gained by reading Krishna’s Supreme Gift to mankind can help people face even the most challenging of situations with a smile, sheer courage, and utter confidence. It is a book that can straightaway calm even the most disturbed mind and teach the reader practical methods to harness it and make the utmost use of its immense potential.

There isn’t any problem that cannot be solved by a composed, well-trained, and stable mind. However, a mind that is not under control can turn out to be one’s worst enemy.

SBG 6:06 The mind is the greatest friend of the one who has conquered it; but of the one who hasn’t, the mind is the greatest enemy.

Is this the first time that you are reading the Srimad Bhagavad Gita? If yes, please go through the following steps.

 1. Complete reading the contents on this page.
2. Watch the Gita Dhyanam video.
3. Watch the 128 Selected Shlokas video. (You may also omit this step if you are ready to spend the next three to four hours reading the entire Bhagavad Gita in one session.)
4. Start reading the 18 Chapters of the Bhagavad Gita. REMEMBER to read ONLY THE TRANSLATIONS and NOT the Verses in Sanskrit. Just aim at COMPLETING ALL 700 Shlokas. It doesn’t matter if you do not understand some Shlokas. Just proceed to complete reading the Divine Scripture. Once you have done it, the very fact that you have completed the entire Bhagavad Gita will motivate you to read it many more times and understand it better.

The Srimad Bhagavad Gita – The panacea for all mental woes and problems such as turmoils in the mind, confusion, lack of clarity, fear, anxiety, stress, anger, lack of self-esteem, self-doubt, and even disease.

If you are reading it for the first time, make sure that you don’t go for those fat copies of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita containing lengthy and highly philosophical interpretations of the Divine verses because they might bore you and make you lose interest. Instead, go to https://tvmgita.wordpress.com/gita/chapter-1/ and start reading the precise translations in simple English of all the chapters. You may either read all 18 chapters in one session or read them in sets of three or four chapters a day. However, reading the entire Bhagavad Gita in one sitting is what I would personally suggest.

सर्वधर्मान्परित्यज्य मामेकं शरणं व्रज |
अहं त्वां सर्वपापेभ्यो मोक्षयिष्यामि मा शुचः || १८ ६६ ||
sarva-dharmaan-parityajya
maamekam sharanam vraja
aham tvaam sarvapaapebhyo
moksha-yishyaami maa shuchaha (SBG 18:66)
Giving up all your ideas of righteousness or religion, take complete refuge in Me. I will liberate you from all sinful reactions (past Karma). Do not fear.

अध्येष्यते च य इमं धर्म्यं संवादमावयोः |
ज्ञानयज्ञेन तेनाहमिष्टः स्यामिति मे मतिः || १८ ७० ||
adhyeshyate cha ya imam
dharmyam samvaada maavayoho
jnaana yajnena tenaaham-
ishtah syaamiti me matihi (SBG 18: 70)

I declare that he who studies this sacred dialogue of ours worships Me through the Yagnya (Sacrifice) of knowledge (or mental sacrifice) which is the highest form of adoring Me.

Gita Dhyanam

The Srimad Bhagavad Gita is the nectar of the Upanishads-

Verse 4 Gitya Dhyanam : All the Upanishads are the cows, the one who milks is Krishna the cowherd boy, Arjuna is the calf, men of purified intellect are the drinkers, the milk is the great nectar of the Gita.

Gita Dhyanam is a short meditative preparation of the mind before beginning to read the Gita.

The 700 golden verses of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita in 18 chapters have the power to change the reader’s life forever.

There isn’t just one way to reach God, but three. The three paths of Yoga taught by Bhagawan Shri Krishna are as follows:

  1. Karma Yoga: the path of Selfless Action.
  2. Bhakti Yoga: the path of Devotion.
  3. Jnana Yoga: the path of Self Transcending Knowledge.

1. Karma Yoga – Path through selfless action

ज्ञेयः स नित्यसंन्यासी यो न द्वेष्टि न काङ्क्षति |
निर्द्वन्द्वो हि महाबाहो सुखं बन्धात्प्रमुच्यते || ५ ३ ||

jneyah sa nitya-sanyaasi
yo na dvesti na kaankshati
nirdvandvo hi mahaa baaho
sukham bandhaat pramuchyate (SBG 5:03)

He who neither hates nor desires the fruit of his actions is known as a perpetual Sanyasi (one who has perpetually renounced results of action)

O mighty armed one, he who is free from dualities is easily liberated from bondage.

ब्रह्मण्याधाय कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा करोति यः |
लिप्यते न स पापेन पद्मपत्रमिवाम्भसा || ५ १० ||

brahamanyaadhaaya karmaa00000Ni
sangam tyaktvaa karoti yah
lipyate na sa paapena
padma patrami vaambhasaa (SBG 7:10)

He who does his duty without any attachment, dedicating them to the Bhagavan is untouched by sin, just as a lotus leaf is by water.

  1. Bhakti Yoga – Path through devotion

श्रीभगवानुवाच |

मय्यावेश्य मनो ये मां नित्ययुक्ता उपासते |
श्रद्धया परयोपेताः ते मे युक्ततमा मताः || १२ २ ||

Sri bhagavaan uvaacha
mayyaa-veshya mano ye maam
nitya-yuktaa upaasate
sraddhayaa parayopetaah
te me yuktatamaa mataah (SBG 12:2)

The Bhagavan said: Those who worship Me, fixing their mind on Me eternally devoted to me and endowed with supreme faith in Me, I regard them as perfect.

  1. Jnana Yoga – Path through knowledge

ज्ञानविज्ञानतृप्तात्मा कूटस्थो विजितेन्द्रियः |
युक्त इत्युच्यते योगी समलोष्टाश्मकांचनः || ६ ८ ||

jnaana-vinnyaana- trptaatma
kuutastho vijitendriyah
yukta ityu-chyate yogi
sama loshtarashma-kaanchanah (Gita 6:8)

The person whose self is satisfied through self-realisation and through knowledge; he who is steady and has his senses under control, to whom a clod of earth, a stone or gold are the same; is a person who is steadfast.

उद्धरेदात्मनात्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत् |
आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्धुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मनः || ६ ५ ||

uddhared-aatmanaatmaanam
naatmaanam-avasaadayet
aatmaiva hyaatmano bandhur
aatmaiva ripur aatmanah (SBG 6:05)

One must raise himself through the self and never degrade himself. For the self alone is one’s friend and also an enemy.

——————————————————————————————————-

Each of the 700 verses is explained as follows:

a. Original text in Sanskrit

b. Transliteration in Roman Script
Please try and pronounce each and every verse considering the breaks in syllables given. Words are broken into smaller sets of syllables which makes learning to pronounce them easier.

c. Translation in English
Read the translation and try to visualise the respective scenes at Kurukshetra. Visualising is very important as this will greatly help in achieving deep involvement with all the developments during the battle of  Mahabharata. All of us fight such battles in our minds, almost every day, don’t we?

The prime objectives of the TVM Gita Samiti are as follows:

a. To enable readers to learn to pronounce the verses of the Gita.

b. To explain each verse using simple terms which will help readers understand them well.

c. To teach readers the method to use the Gita as a daily guide in life.

d. To enlighten people and to show them the way to treat and respect The Gita as a Divine source for solutions to every kind of problem one may face in life.

e. To encourage children and young people to take to studying the Gita.

f. To study, understand and interpret this great philosophy from a modern and contemporary perspective.

g. To enlighten even atheists by explaining the Gita as the greatest metaphor ever.
