Dean Farm Trust water pipe appeal

Tax deductible
The Dean Farm sanctuary water system is connected through 750 metres of  hose pipes taking water to our residents' fields, ensuring they have fresh water daily.  This water comes from one tap near the barns, with various connectors and attachments used across 32 acres of pasture. It is an extremely time consuming method and plagued with problems, but until now we have not had any extra funds to put in an underground system.

Earlier this year we applied for a grant to have a system installed, this would greatly help the residents and mean at least 25 hours a week of volunteer and staff time would be freed up. Not to mention the cost of replacing 100's metres of hose, it's attachments and repairs on a regular basis. After a detailed application, we were absolutely delighted to be awarded a grant of £6,874.01 from The Marchig Animal Welfare Trust.

At the time of the application we were in national lockdown so couldn't get contractors out to give us an estimate, our figure was based on research and planning, and hoped it would be enough. After lockdown, our contractors came on-site and gave us the estimate. We are pleased to say we were pretty close, but £1,806 short due to a number of reasons: the digger and mole was more expensive than we had thought, it's a huge piece of machinery with higher running costs than predicted. Also because of its size, we need to take a portion of the  fencing out of 5 paddocks to allow room for machine to pass through. The fencing will then need to be re instated, all of this was not factored in.

It's been a challenging few years managing the water at the sanctuary. Hoses perish, split and break. The connections blow off and residents stand on them and chew them. We also struggle with very low water pressure at times, which means hours spent filling wallows and buckets out of a 50mm hose pipe.

On freezing winter days, we have to carry water from the barns to the paddocks in containers. This takes so much time, which could be used more effectively.

We have waited so long for this to happen and desperately need another £1806 to pay for the extra costs. The work needs to be completed as soon as possible before the weather changes and the ground gets wet and muddy. Please donate if you can, it will be an enormous help to  the running of the sanctuary with many hours being used more effectively with our residents and other vital jobs. This is a big project that we have waited so long for, please help if you can - any donation will help. Thank you.
