Women's Diversity Network Health Equity Task Force
Task Force Sign on Letter:
Dear Community Based Organizations, Partners, Colleagues and Friends:

The Women’s Diversity Network (WDN) connects and mobilizes women of diverse backgrounds to create positive change through collective work and a unified sisterhood.  We educate communities and advocate with women to break down barriers that limit our potential while celebrating our diverse backgrounds.  At this time, we ask for your solidarity in raising awareness and garnering support around dismantling racial, economic, and social inequalities affecting Black women and other marginalized populations on Long Island.

One issue that is having a disparate impact on black women and families across the country is the maternal mortality rate. While the United States is one of the wealthiest nations in the world, it is the only developed country whose maternal mortality rate continues to increase. Black women who make up 14% of the population, are 3 times more likely to die in childbirth or from pregnancy related complications, than their white counterparts. These statistics remain consistent regardless of access to care, income level, or educational attainment. Recognizing that disparities in healthcare not only compromise an individual’s quality of life, but also that of families, communities, and our nation at large, WDN has created the Health Equity Task Force to create a space for discussion and collective action, which will lead the way for meaningful change.
Following the model of the New York State Task Force on Maternal Mortality and Disparate Racial Outcomes launched in 2018, WDN will address health disparities by:
 (1) building and sustaining a Health Equity Network that creates a sense of community and promotes best practices;
(2) increasing awareness of racial disparities in maternal/child health and health outcomes;
(3) assisting women and other vulnerable populations in demanding a better standard of care;
(4) holding providers accountable to crucial standards and recommendations set forth by their organizational and governmental bodies;
(5) creating an advocacy platform that brings about policy change.

As organizations that are dedicated to providing fair and equitable health care, we implore you to sign on to this letter in support of WDN’s Health Equity Task Force and to work collaboratively with us to accomplish its goals.
