Selection Process

Create an account today to get started on the application, receive NYC Teaching Collaborative program updates, and be invited to upcoming events.

The selection process for the NYC Teaching Collaborative consists of three parts: the online application, a phone interview, and an in-person interview (Selection Day). We recommend that interested candidates apply as early as possible. Our admissions process is done on a rolling basis and interview spots for candidates interested in teaching particular subject areas may close sooner than other subject areas.

  1. The online application.

The online application collects information about your employment and academic background and subject area preferences, and also includes several short-answer essay questions.

A full transcript from the university where you completed your bachelor’s degree is a required element of your application. Depending on your education experience, you may also be asked to submit transcripts from other credit granting institutions as part of the application process.

For this reason, we strongly recommend that you begin the application process early to provide sufficient time to gather the transcripts and records you need.

Please note: Candidates who received their bachelor’s degree from a university outside the United States, or Puerto Rico, are required to submit a course-by-course evaluation of their degree and all coursework as part of their application process. This is required to determine the candidate’s potential subject area teaching assignment and their university placement during training. Review this article to learn more about course-by-course evaluations.

  2. The phone interview.

Following the online application, a select group of candidates will be invited to a phone interview. You can expect to hear back from us regarding the status of your application within 5-8 weeks of submitting a complete application.

Please note: Some candidates may skip the phone interview and move directly to Selection Day if sufficient evidence has been collected through the review of their Online Application.

  3. Selection Day.

Following the phone interview, a select group of candidates will be invited to an in-person interview in New York City. The interview will include a teaching sample and a group activity with other candidates.

You must be prepared to interview in New York City. Not all candidates invited to a phone interview will be invited to an in-person interview.

Based on the strengths of your application and interview, your subject area eligibility, and the needs of New York City schools, you will receive an admission decision from the NYC Teaching Collaborative. All candidates invited to interview will receive an update regarding the status of their application.
