What Rhymes with Mother's Day? Giveaway!
WHAT RHYMES WITH MOTHER'S DAY? GIVEAWAY!

Happy May to all and Happy Mother's Day to many. Cheers to the women who wipe noses, tie laces, and remind us to sit up straight. I remember well the day I became a mother. Four kids later, I'm still learning, still growing, still in awe of my kids and I feel blessed every day. Humbled, too, by the love and sacrifice of my own mother, who raised three girls into women and lived to tell the tale.

What Rhymes with Mother's Day? Giveaway! And I've got a great one—for moms, for non-moms, and everyone in between.

For readers of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, author Suzy Krause delivers a quirky, colorful story about love, loss, second chances, and what it means to truly live in her debut novel, Valencia and Valentine—my Mother's Day Giveaway pick.

How to Build Your Own Bucket List
HOW TO BUILD YOUR OWN BUCKET LIST

What exactly is a bucket list? A hypothetical to toss out when someone asks—a response akin to answering what you'd do if you ever won the lottery? Are bucket lists worthwhile? Out of reach? Or just plain silly? Lately, I've been thinking they're something to build. Something to alter and update as your life unfolds. How about you? Do you have a bucket list? Ever wonder how to build one?
For the Love of Fine China
FOR THE LOVE OF
FINE CHINA

I didn't register for china when I got married. No plates, platters, or place settings for me. Had I, I'd probably opt for simple banded china; white with a platinum band. Instead, we registered for camping equipment and we use it all the time. I still don't own a lick of china. Although, over the years, I've amassed a different sort of "fine china." TYPING "FIN" AT BARBOURSVILLE VINEYARD

Fin is French for end. Often typed in capital letters at the bottom of a screenplay, it means "the end." During a February getaway at Barboursville Vineyard, I typed FIN at the bottom of the manuscript that would become my debut novel, Holly Banks Full of Angst.

Vines quiet. Snow falling. No internet. Just me and my words and the most amazing feeling . . .

HOLLY BANKS FULL OF ANGST
VILLAGE OF PRIMM SERIES, BOOK 1

Pinch me! In April, I shared my first ever book cover on social media.
As a special treat for me, that day was also my first child's 21st birthday.
I think—life's cool like that. I'm still smiling.

Available for pre-order now.
Official pub date is November 1, 2019.

TOPIARY OF THE MONTH:
THE TOPIARY PARK IN COLUMBUS, OHIO (USA)

Holly Banks Full of Angst is the first book in the Village of Primm series—and the Village of Primm loves topiaries! May's "Topiary of the Month" feature is The Topiary Park in Columbus, Ohio (USA).

"The Topiary Park is a landscape of a painting of a landscape. ... If an artist can paint a picture of a landscape—art mimicking nature—then why not a sculptor creating a landscape of a work of art—nature mimicking art?" —James T. Mason, sculptor and creator of the topiary interpretation of George Seurat's famous painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Isle of La Grande Jatte.
QUOTE OF THE MONTH: "You are as welcome as the flowers in May." - Charles Macklin

Charles Macklin (26 September 1690 – 11 July 1797) was an Irish actor and dramatist who performed extensively at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. He revolutionized 18th-century theatre by introducing a "natural style" of acting. Famous for killing a man by plunging his cane into the man's eye in a fight over a wig, Macklin was quite a character. Even his age (106) at the time of his death is the stuff of legend.

Learn more about Charles Macklin in Memoirs of Charles Macklin, Comedian by William Cook, a work originally published in 1804 by J. Asperne and recently selected by scholars as being "...culturally important and part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it."

BOOK OF THE MONTH: Valencia and Valentine by Suzy Krause

One hardback copy is up for grabs!

DRINK OF THE MONTH: "The Mom-scato"

May 9 is National Moscato Day!

My tribute to moms, cherries (featured prominently in my novel), and Barboursville Vineyard's Moscato cottage where I first typed FIN.

Ingredients per glass:
  • 3 ounces of your favorite Moscato d'Asti—the most common type of Moscato wine—white, sweet, and slightly sparkling or "frizzante"
  • ¾ ounces cherry vodka
  • 1 ounce cranberry juice
  • ¼ ounce simple syrup
  • stemmed Maraschino cherry and a "sprig" of mint leaves to garnish

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, shake the cherry vodka, cranberry juice and simple syrup to chill. Strain into a champagne flute. Top with moscato. Drop a cherry and a sprig of mint to garnish.

Cheers!
