Deserts are known for being hot and dry. The largest desert by far is the Sahara Desert, with an area of 9,200,000 square kilometers, covering most of North Africa. This desert continues to grow at an estimated rate of 48 km per year, which creates more food instability for local countries. This rapid desert growth is also called desertification.
