The Word on the Street

Halloween draws nigh,

so it’s time to decide

on a costume.

haddonfield.today | 3

What was your favorite,

as a kid? Or what costume

do you wish you had been

able to wear?

SONNY GOLDFIN

of Blackwood would

love to have dressed

as The Man from

Glad. “I liked his

all-white costume,”

Sonny says. “A

superhero for purity

and cleanliness.”

As a ten-year-old in

Scranton, CATHIE

MCGEEHAN of

Haddonfield was

fascinated by the

exotically dressed

lady who sold

huckleberries doorto-door.

“That year, I

dressed as a gypsy.”

Haddonfield’s

MARIA GORSHIN:

“When I was about

nine, I dressed as a

flamenco dancer.

My mother had all

the components:

red-and-black skirt,

castanets, combs,

shawl, and fan.”

“I really wanted to

dress as Zorro,” says

NICK NICOLAY of

Haddonfield, “with

a mask, cape, sword,

and sombrero.” But

all his folks came

up with was a black

cape and a bayonet.

“I carved Zs in trees.”

As a ten-year-old,

VINCENT BELLIZIA

dressed as an FDA

inspector. “When a

homeowner opened

their door, I insisted

on inspecting their

candy to make sure it

was FDA-approved,”

he says. “I wore my

dad’s fedora, with

fake business cards

in the band.”

DEBBIE PECK, coowner

of Melange

Boutique, wishes she

could have dressed

“in the Cruella de

Ville costume I made

for my daughter,

Courtney, when she

was in first grade.

We both loved ‘101

Dalmations’ – still

do. It was a terrific

costume.”

Let’s hear it for Haddyween!

OpenSouthJersey.com is publicizing a number of activities in Haddonfield

related to Halloween. Locally, the site has branded the initiative, “Haddyween.”

Details on two scavenger hunts may be found on the website – one

sponsored by the Historical Society and the other by The Allison Nagle Team at

RE/MAX One. Scavenger hunt cards are available to diners at The Bistro, on the

corner of Kings Hwy and Tanner.

Families are being encouraged to create scarecrows for their front yards.

Information about getting the ingredients may be found on the website, along

with details of a planned townwide scarecrow walk.

Between Fri Oct 16 and Sun Nov 1, downtown shoppers can vote for their

favorite Haddyween window displays. One lucky shopper will win a Trick-or-

Treat bag of gift cards contributed by participating businesses. The business

that gets the most votes will win free advertising in Haddonfield Today, sponsor

of the contest.

The Happy Hippo

has a wide variety of

dinosaur-themed toys,

and there may even

be an appearance by a

friendly dinosaur on the

corner of Kings Highway

and Haddon Avenue.

Visit Inkwood Books for

dinosaur and Halloweenthemed

reading fun.

DiBartolo’s new

European-style pâtisserie

will be baking up

something special – stay

tuned!

Photo opportunities

for families by the

bronze sculpture will

be available, including a

guest appearance from

the artist himself, John

Giannotti. At 11am on

Sat Oct 31, he will talk

about the process of

creating the sculpture.

King’s Road Brewery

will feature a Haddythemed

beer for the

occasion – “Hadrosaur

Hop Giant.” It will be

released on Sat Oct 31.

Then, when the sun goes

down, King’s Road will

screen Jurassic Park on

the outside wall of their

beer garden (weather

permitting).

All across town, thru

Sat Oct 31, Haddonfield

residents and visitors

can enjoy the spirit of

the holiday with these

and other Haddyween

happenings.

Bancroft update

The Borough released the following statement with respect to the Bancroft

property on Wed Oct 13.

The Board of Commissioners has spent several months communicating with

Two Hopkins Lane Urban Renewal, LLC (“2HL”), the designated redeveloper of

the Bancroft site, in an effort to spur the productive re-use of the Bancroft site.

2HL has recently submitted site plans for the Bancroft site, seeking approvals

to construct a proposed redevelopment project consistent with the terms of

the redevelopment plan and redevelopment agreement between the Borough

and 2HL.

The filed site plans (the “2HL Plans”), which are on file within the Community

Development Office, are nearly identical to those submitted in 2019. The 2HL

Plans will be made public on the Borough website once deemed complete

in accordance with applicable land use laws, and may also be obtained by

residents via request pursuant to the Open Public Records Act (“OPRA”).

Importantly, the 2HL Plans will be subject to multiple public hearings. The 2HL

Plans were already under review by the Historic Preservation Commission

(“HPC”) back in 2019, when the review process was halted due to litigation.

HPC will now convene a sub-committee to re-examine the 2HL Plans this fall.

After appearing before HPC and receiving their Certificate of Appropriateness

from the Planning Board (“PB”), 2HL will then apply to the PB for site plan and

subdivision approvals. The Borough anticipates that the Planning Board will

hear the 2HL Plans during the fourth quarter of 2020.

As always, the Board of Commissioners will continue to pursue the

productive re-use of the Bancroft site in a manner beneficial to the residents of

the Borough, and will provide regular updates to the public moving forward.

Plan” may be accessed here: bit.ly/2HcOAIn n.

A Frog Race?

New Year’s Eve 1897:

Bicycle riders raced

through Haddonfield to

try to catch a leader who

happened to be wearing

... a large, inflatable frog

costume.

The organizer of the

1897 race – and the

rider wearing the frog

costume – was G. L. Carr,

a clerk for the druggist

C. S. Braddock Jr., at 201

East Main Street (now

Kings Highway).

Newspapers around

the country ran articles

about the 11-mile race.

Inspired by these

reports, the Historical

Society has decided

to host a virtual

Haddonfield Frog Race

and is challenging

participants to complete

11 miles biking, running,

walking, or even

swimming, before Sun

Nov 15. It’s a fun, familyfriendly

diversion. Frog

costumes optional!

Registration for this

fundraising event is

$25 for ages 13 and up,

and $20 for ages 12 and

under. The first 100

registrants will get a free

tee-shirt with an image

of the original frogcostumed

bike rider. All

who submit completed

race forms before

Nov 15 will be entered

to win four tickets to the

Philadelphia Zoo.

The 2020 version of

the Haddonfield Frog

Race is virtual, of course

– inside or outside, fast

or slow, in one outing or

100 – and participants

must follow COVID-19

health guidelines and

safety regulations.

COVID-19 update

In the October 6 issue of Haddonfield Today, we

reported that as of Wed Sep 30, the Camden County

Department of Health had confirmed 116 cases of

the novel coronavirus COVID-19 for Haddonfield

residents – 64 males and 52 females, and five

fatalities.

As of Thu Oct 15, the number of cases had risen

to 130 – 71 males and 59 females (including one

High School student). The number of fatalities

remained unchanged.

By decade, the most cases to date fall in the 20s

– 17 males and 14 females, a total of 31. Next, the

10s – 9 males and 15 females, a total of 24.

The uptick that Haddonfield has seen in the past

seven days – 11 new cases – is consistent with

trends in New Jersey and nationwide.

The 973 new cases reported in New Jersey on Thu

Oct 15 marks the third straight day with a number

higher than 900; hospitalizations topped 700 for the

first time in two months.

On Wed Oct 14, nearly 60,000 new cases were

reported nationwide – up 16 % from the previous

week.

In commenting on these trends on Thu Oct 15,

Camden County Freeholder Director Lou Cappelli Jr

said: “We are seeing spiking cases not only at home

but across the country and other parts of the world.

Public health experts have linked the rise at least in

part to the increasing number of small gatherings

indoors. I know it is not easy to go without seeing

friends and family for extended periods of time, but

we have to do everything we can to stop the spread

of COVID-19. Please continue to wear a mask, social

distance, and take all necessary steps to minimize

the chance that you could spread or contract this

virus.”

The current age/gender stats for Haddonfield are:

• <10 – 2 (1 male, 1 female)

• 10s – 24 (9 males, 15 females)

• 20s – 31 (17 males, 14 females)

• 30s – 15 (7 males, 8 females)

• 40s – 15 (8 males, 7 females)

• 50s – 18 (15 males, 3 females)

• 60s – 7 (2 males, 5 females)

• 70s – 6 (males)

• 80s – 4 (1 mail, 3 females)

• 90s – 1 (female)

• Unknown ages – 7 (6 males, 1 female)

• Total – 130 (71 males, 59 females)

Comparison (using 2010 Census):

• Haddonfield – 130 cases (11.21/1,000); 5 deaths

• Camden County – 11,413 (22.22) cases; 562 deaths

• New Jersey – 216,994 cases (24.43); 14,408 deaths

• United States – 7,916,100 cases; 216,872 deaths

• World – 38,584,723 cases; 1,092,783 deaths

Memo: Local Real Estate Agents

From: David Hunter / Publisher, Haddonfield Today

Date: October 2020

It’s true: Nearly 90% of buyers use some sort of online

resource during their house hunt. 1 So you absolutely

must include online in your marketing toolkit.

However, newspapers give you

credibility. 2 And that really

counts, especially in your

incredibly competitive world.

Why do so many local

businesses – including Realtors

– advertise so consistently in Haddonfield Today?

Because it works. And why does it work? Because

readers trust it. That trust will rub off on you!

Let’s talk! Call or text me

today, at 856-428-3399.

Virtual concert

Haddonfield United

Methodist Church will

host the Mi Wha Lee

Memorial Sanctuary

Organ Recital, featuring

organist Matt Smith, on

Sat Nov 14.

The virtual concert

may be viewed on

the church’s website:

A second concert is

planned for Sun Dec 13.

Trick. No treat.

In light of the fact that

the number of reported

cases of COVID-19 has

been increasing in recent

days – nationwide,

in New Jersey, and

in Haddonfield – the

Borough Commissioners

are strongly urging

residents to refrain from

trick-or-treating and

hosting large gatherings

this year.

The Centers for

Disease Control and

Prevention have

identified trick-ortreating

as a high-risk

activity and the NJ

Department of Health

has issues guidance

highlighting alternatives

to traditional trick-ortreating

so as to prevent

the spread of COVID-19.

The Borough is urging

residents and visitors

to “Celebrate Halloween

on the Highway,” and

is planning to display

bales of hay, luminaria,

painted pumpkins, jack

o’lanterns during the

week prior to Sat Oct 31.

“We hope everyone

understands that this

is to safeguard not

only the children who

participate in these

activities, but also our

entire community,” the

Commissioners wrote in

a posting on the Borough

website.

A new memorial marker

The Haddonfield Garden Club will dedicate a Blue

Star Memorial Highway Marker at 1pm on Veterans

Day – Wed Nov 11 – rain or shine. The marker is

located on the sidewalk in front of the Borough Hall.

The Blue Star Memorial Program began in 1944

with the NJ Council of Garden Clubs planting 8,000

dogwood trees dedicated to World War II veterans.

The National Council of State Garden Clubs

adopted the program, named for the blue star in the

service flag, which hung in windows of homes and

businesses to honor service men and women. In

time, the program extended to highway markers, to

recognize all who had served in the U.S. military.

A REALLY BAD BUG HAS INVADED OUR AREA

The Spotted Lanternfly causes serious damage in trees

including oozing sap, wilting, leaf curling, and tree dieback. Also,

when spotted lanternflies feed, they excrete a sugary substance

(“honeydew”) that encourages the growth of black sooty mold.

It’s harmless to people, but it causes damage to plants and can

coat decks and play equipment. ALSO, the Spotted Lanternfly

is a HUGE threat to New Jersey’s agriculture industry.

In the fall, these bugs will lay egg masses with 30 to 50 eggs

each. They are called bad bugs for a reason. If you see a

Spotted Lanternfly, email SLF-plantindustry@ag.nj.gov or call

1-833-223-2840 (BAD-BUG-0).

What else? Kill it! Squash it, smash it ... just get rid of it.

Your BEST DEFENSE is to CALL US FIRST! We can treat for

Spotted Lanternfly, in advance.

The Last Word

#082 • OCTOBER 16 TO 30, 2020

To hire, or not to hire?

That is the question.

By David Hunter

To hire, or not to hire?

That is the obvious question employers ask themselves about the leading candidate

every time they seek to fill a vacant position. Oftentimes, the answer is indicated not

so much by how well the applicant did in interviews and on tests, as by an assessment

of the prospective employee’s character.

Character counts.

That’s why, when you roam the halls of schools across the country, you’ll see

posters with those words in common areas, classrooms, and libraries. Educators

in Haddonfield and around the world know they “cannot just sit back and hope our

children and young people will grow up to become caring, respectful, responsible, and

decent human beings.” [Gary Smit, a retired superintendent of schools in Illinois, on

charactercounts.org n.] Core values and desired character traits can be taught, and

“we can nurture the qualities that enhance ... moral growth and development.”

Created in 1992 by the Josephson Institute of Ethics at Drake University (Des

Moines IA), Character Counts! is a comprehensive student development program

embracing academic, social, and

emotional skills and traits, as well

as the Six Pillars of Character:

trustworthiness, respect,

responsibility, fairness, caring,

and citizenship. It claims to be the

largest character development

organization in the world.

The eight guiding principles for

Character Counts! remain profound

and pertinent nearly 30 years after

they were written:

October 18 to 24, 2020

1. The next generation will be the stewards of our communities, nation and planet

in extraordinarily critical times.

2. In such times, the well-being of our society requires an involved, caring citizenry

with good moral character.

3. People do not automatically develop good moral character; therefore,

conscientious efforts must be made to help young people develop the values and

abilities necessary for moral decision making and conduct.

4. Effective character education is based on core ethical values rooted in

democratic society, in particular, respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, justice and

fairness, caring and civic virtue and citizenship.

5. These core ethical values transcend cultural, religious and socioeconomic

differences.

6. Character education is, first and foremost, an obligation of families and faith

communities, but schools and youth-service organizations also have a responsibility

to help develop the character of young people.

7. These responsibilities are best achieved when these groups work in concert.

8. The character and conduct of our youth reflect the character and conduct of

society; therefore, every adult has the responsibility to teach and model the core

ethical values and every social institution has the responsibility to promote the

development of good character.

As millions of Americans head to post offices, secure drop-boxes, and polling places

to cast ballots in the 2020 presidential election, I hope they will think of themselves as

employers. I hope they will put the candidates’ resumes aside, and make “character”

the key criterion in their decision to hire, or not to hire.

I’d like Democrats to ask themselves, “If Joe Biden were a Republican, would I vote

for him?” And Republicans to ask, “If Donald Trump were a Democrat, would I vote for

him?” Those questions put the focus on character. Ultimately, that’s what counts.
