The award-winning humanitarian and former UN Senior Advisor on Gender Equality shares an inspiring life's journey that was sparked by a near-death experience.
Elizabeth Nyamayaro launched one of the world's largest global solidarity movements for gender equality, HeForShe. Before that she was a senior advisor at the United Nations. But at eight years old, she was almost dead from hunger and drought in the village of Goromonzi in Zimbabwe. She encountered a United Nations aid worker who gave her a bowl of warm porridge and saved her life. That one moment inspired Elizabeth to become a humanitarian, and she vowed to dedicate her life to giving back. Her work is grounded in the concept of of ubuntu—"I am because we are"—and it has taken her over two decades from Harare to London, New York, and beyond. Nyamayaro's memoir recounts her perseverance through incredible odds and how she found a true calling.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Elizabeth Nyamayaro is an award-winning humanitarian and former United Nations Senior Advisor on Gender and Equality. Born in Zimbabwe, Elizabeth has worked at the forefront of global development for over two decades, improving the lives of underserved populations and has held leadership roles at the World Bank, World Health Organization, UNAIDS, and UN Women. I Am a Girl from Africa is her first book.
Gillian Tett serves as the chair of the editorial board and editor-at-large, US of the Financial Times. She writes weekly columns, covering a range of economic, financial, political and social issues. She is also the co-founder of FT Moral Money, a twice weekly newsletter that tracks the ESG revolution in business and finance which has since grown to be a staple FT product. Tett is the author of The Silo Effect, the 2009 New York Times bestseller and Financial Book of the Year at the inaugural Spear's Book Awards Fool's Gold, and Saving the Sun. Her next book, Anthro-Vision: A New Way to See Life and Business will come out in June 2021.
