Professor & Director, Buckingham Enterprise & Innovation Unit (BEIU), Vinson Building, University of Buckingham. BA (Hons) FCIM

I am going to try to communicate the exciting time that I have had in the last two weeks with Ryan Kerstein, Stefan Hudson from BHT Research BHT Research and many other people running the University of Buckingham Medical School's Student Selected Component (SSC) on Clinical Innovation and Enterprise for third year medical students. I know that I learned a lot working with superb professionals from a range of disciplines and also from eleven medical students, who were surprised by our approach to the module. We explained to the students that their SSC would be a combination of theory and its practical application, guiding them through the principles of clinical innovation and enterprise, including the gathering of ideas for clinical innovation through fast-paced research with staff at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. We split them into two groups and by designing and using research with Stoke Mandeville Hospital staff, each group found out about real problems faced by the staff. Each group then decided to work on one problem from those presented by the staff. Ryan then introduced the students to Google Ventures "Design Sprint" method to develop an innovative solution and produce a first prototype to resolve the problem in just five days. During the next three days, the medical students prepared for the first stage of commercialisation and funding. They learned how to work on all aspects of Marketing, Finance, Operations and Regulations/IP to develop a business plan & pitch deck. During the last day they learned how to pitch to "Buckingham Angels“ to see if they could get the finance needed to continue to develop the innovative solution they had identified. They were taught, encouraged, mentored and supported during an "out of comfort zone" experience by lecturers, doctors, surgeons, lawyers and a range of other specialists experienced in all the fields they needed to complete the SSC successfully. Yesterday the two teams: #ViewOp: @Victor Lee - MD @Omar Alhalabi - Marketing @Santosh Joseph - Finance @Ceren Aydemir - Operations @Ahmed Alahmad - Regulations/IP and #MedLingual: Dyan Pancharatnam - MD @Harshita Buragapu - Marketing Prince Tandukar - Marketing @Lavanya Gupta - Finance Atharv Patankar - Operations Fay Fareed - Regulations/IP pitched to "Buckingham Angels" at BHT Research & Innovation Centre with an audience of nurses, doctors, other staff and Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust CEO Neil Macdonald. The result was: #ViewOp scored 397 out of 500 #MedLingual scored 396 out of 500. They were only going to get chocolates as a prize. but to everyone's amazement, one of the Angels, Dr. Roger Jefcoate, engineer and philanthropist (who has been associated with Stoke Mandeville for more than 60 years) personally awarded both teams £1000. This wonderful award is to encourage the students to work with Buckingham Enterprise and Innovation Unit and BHT Research BHT Research Centre to develop and commercialise both Apps.
