ABOUT

The AALL State of the Profession report provides an overview of the law library and legal information landscape. This report captures the range of legal information professionals’ contributions, challenges, and goals. It is intended to be used as a tool for benchmarking, advocacy, strategic planning, and personal development. The inaugural edition debuted in 2019, the second edition was published in June 2021, and the third edition published May 1, 2023.

STATE OF THE PROFESSION REPORT COMMITTEE

The State of the Profession Report Committee reviews and revises the surveys that inform the AALL State of the Profession report to ensure they reflect the current state of law librarianship and the legal information profession.  The committee produces separate instruments for academic, firm/corporate, and government settings.

2023 Edition

The report was published May 1, 2023 and is available for purchase. The 2023 edition highlights how law libraries in various organizations have bounced back following the pandemic, especially with respect to budgets and remote/in-person work. 2021 Edition

The 2023 AALL State of the Profession report has been covered in an exclusive interview with Law360 that AALL President-Elect June Liebert participated in, and was also covered by Bob Ambrogi in his LawSites blog and shared on InfoDocket.

The 2021 AALL State of the Profession report has been covered by Above the Law, Dewey B Strategic, InfoDocket, LawSites by Robert Ambrogi, and Legaltech News.

The 2019 edition was covered by ABA Journal and 3 Geeks and a Law. Robert Ambrogi wrote about the publication for Above the Law and LawSites and discussed it with former AALL President Femi Cadmus during an episode of his LawNext podcast.
