I am thrilled to share with you such a diverse range of events to celebrate Western Australia’s natural, Aboriginal and historic heritage.

The events focused on Noongar woman Fanny Balbuk represent the theme so well. This National Trust program will bring her story to the wider community. She had such a strong voice in a time when women’s voices, and particularly Aboriginal women’s voices, were silent. It is absolutely fascinating.

The festival has new branding and a new website to better represent the national nature of this wonderful celebration of heritage. This year’s Having a Voice theme has been inspired by the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum that gave Aboriginal people the vote. It has inspired a range of diverse events from song and parenting to fashion and news.

CONGRATULATIONS on the launch of the 2017 Australian Heritage Festival I am extremely pleased that the National Trust Heritage Festival, Australia’s longest running community festival, has now been expanded through a three year partnership with the Australian Government to become the Australian Heritage Festival. Running for four weeks from 18th April to 21st May, the Festival engages local communities in their history and the importance of recognising a nationally shared heritage. This year’s theme is Having a Voice— extremely fitting as our national heritage is rich with voices from many cultures. Australia’s heritage is unique, it contributes to our sense of place, community and personal wellbeing, it informs us about where we have come from and who we are, and is an

important part of our national identity. Western Australia is home to some of Australia’s most important heritage places, including Fremantle Prison, part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage listing; the spectacular Dampier Archipelago with its abundant and exceptionally diverse rock engravings with some sites containing thousands or tens of thousands of images; Cape Inscription where Dirk Hartog and his crew became the first Europeans to land on the west coast of Australia; and Lesueur National Park, an internationally recognised ‘biodiversity hotspot’ and one of the most important reserves for plant conservation in Australia. Community groups have embraced this year’s Festival theme – Having a Voice – with enthusiasm. Fifty years ago the 1967 referendum gave Aboriginal people a voice in the affairs of our nation through the right to vote. In this festival other seldom heard voices which contribute to the richness of our community will be heard. From graves to roof tops, voices of West Australians will entertain and enrich you.

Traditional Masonry Skills Demonstrations Day

Join a leisurely walk around historic Sandstone and be guided through local historical buildings for a closer look at the secrets inside.
