Help The Homeless

What can we do to help?

Many people think that Chandler is a safe place with little to no problems, but one situation, not just specifically in Chandler, but throughout the world, is homelessness. It may not seem like a big deal, but when there are around 45,000 students in Chandler Unified School District, one-fourth of all the students in CUSD are homeless, according to https://azcend.org/ . That's about 11,250 students whose families are in financial problems. However, that number may have decreased throughout the years.

Of course, that doesn't mean that all families are the stereotypical "homeless" that beg for money on the streets. It may mean they don't have a consistent place to live, i.e. moving from house to house, living in a friend's house, living in foster care or shelters, or even living in motels, cars, and trailers. While these students may not seem like they are struggling at first glance, some of them may not get a real, hot meal after Friday's lunch, until they come to school on Monday morning. What can we do to help?

Genius Hour, or 20% Time, is an in-school project in which students get to research, make, and present a project of their choice. For our Genius Hour, we are working on the HelpTheHomeless project. Our teacher, Mrs. Shannan Wright, along with 2 others who are working on different Genius Hour projects are helping to make the bags.
