T

he experts in these cyber matters tell us it was an exceptional response. In the first weeks after issue two of Society Living was released there were more than 1,500 unique visits to the new virtual magazine featured at www.societylivingmagazine.com. In fact, the response was so impressive the magazine was featured as one of the 10 most widely read online magazines. Some other innovative features of the website are still under construction but while they are being updated the whole magazine, including back copies, can be read digitally online (and printed out) – even before the traditional “paper” magazine is distributed from the first of the month. The same applies to our sister magazine Beautiful Home, the second issue of which is due out in August (www.beautifulhomemagazine.com). While the initial response online has been particularly impressive, we have also been pleased to see how well Society Living is being received at hundreds of prime outlets along the coast. One outstanding example is Starz Café in Central Plaza, which handed out 1,000 magazines in each of May and June, Just as important, especially during the summer high season, is our distribution at the main Costa del Sol hotels, including Lorcrimar, Marriott, Crowne Plaza, Westin La Quinta, Guadalpin and Barcelo – as well as golf clubs, beach clubs and other key points from Málaga to Sotogrande and Gibraltar. THE POWER OF DEPENDABILITY After 14 years at the top of J.D. Power and Associates’ Vehicle Dependability Study, Lexus has now given way to two new pretenders to the throne. Jaguar (pictured) and Buick tied for the 2009 top ranking (with 122 problems per 100 vehicles), as Lexus (126) slipped to third. The study is designed to measure problems experienced by original owners of three-yearold (2006 model year) vehicles. According to Neal Oddes, director of product research and analysis at J.D. Power, “Buick and Jaguar both lead the industry in nameplate performance… We see improvements all over the board with Jaguar.” Nevertheless, Jaguar, which India’s Tata Motors Ltd. bought from Ford in 2007, remains a relatively small-volume brand in the U.S., selling just 14,000 vehicles in 2008 (Buick’s sales were 128,000). The industry average was 170 problems per 100 vehicles. rince Charles has won his battle against the developers of the old Chelsea Barracks site, off the Kings Road. The Quatari Royal Family had appointed Candy & Candy to run this development on the edge of Belgravia, and appointed Lord Rogers to come up with a plan. But no one liked it. against endless modern blocks. The Royal Institute of British Architects thundered against the Prince, telling him he didn’t understand what people wanted. But he did. The public voted for more classic buildings. Then the Candy brothers sold their shares, the Emir of Qatar had meetings with Sir Michael Peat, Charles’ private secretary, and Westminster withdrew their permission. Good for the Prince! Time after time, Charles shows that he has more understanding of what we want than all the politicians and the mighty architects who spoil our townscape with their concrete clichés. ■ The London Eye, Britain’s most popular paidfor visitor attraction, is about to embark on a three-year, £12.5 million makeover, and will be fitted with a “superpod” featuring video screens and wi-fi internet connection. It’s the first facelift since the world’s largest observation wheel was built 10 years ago. Airconditioning will be upgraded, and one of the 31 pods will have four screens, giving information about the landmarks visible on the London skyline during the half-hour trip I’m happy to report that the Eye will not stop running while the work is done. I’ve been on the Eye dozens of times, and it’s always a treat. The views of London are magical and romantic in the evening, and outstandingly majestic during the day!

■ Jennifer Aniston became America’s sweetheart as Rachel in the 1990s television sitcom, Friends. Her latest run of rom-com flicks, Marley and Me, He’s Just Not That Into You and Management rake in the dough, but don’t win her any acting accolades. Which is a shame. She’s a talented comedienne, who needs a good film role. Playing the same Rachel-like character all the time is not worthy of her. The public adore her, and it’s easy to see why. I caught up with her when she was doing the press rounds in London, and found her to be a delight. Naturally warm, she’s a more glamorous girl-next-door type, who married and then divorced one of the most famous and handsome men on the planet. I hope that her next two films, Brand New Day and Travelling, due out later this year, will stretch her talents more. ■ London chocolate lovers have scooped up Le Whif, a calorie-free chocolate that, instead of eating, is inhaled. It has already sold out after its launch, and the team behind it are trying to meet the demand by over-the-moon chocoholics, who can’t believe their good fortune. Punters place the gadget in their mouth and press. A fine chocolate powder is sprayed, giving the illusion of eating chocolate. It costs £9 for six inhalers, and they are selling for more than double their value on eBay. Each unit has four inhales, and several flavours are available. Harvard Professor David Edwards created Le Whif, with French experimental chef Thierry Max. The chocolate inhaler may well be able to fool the brain, but it’s still nothing like the real thing. Far better to indulge a bit of what you fancy from a classy emporium, like Rococo, run by chocolate guru Chantal Coady. ■ “I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers,” is one of the most famous lines uttered by Blanche DuBois, Tennessee Williams’ delusional, faded southern beauty in A Streetcar Named Desire. Now Rachel Weisz, the Oscar-winning British actress, will play Williams’ poignant character in Rob Asford’s revival at the Donmar Warehouse in Covent Garden, which opens at the end of the month. The brainy Oxbridge brunette beauty is no stranger to the London stage, having starred in Design for Living, Gwyneth Paltrow: Prefers not to be photographed in public with hubby Chris Martin

Suddenly Last Summer and The Shape of Things. Blanche is one of the great roles for an actress to play. The character was immortalised by Vivien Leigh in the film version, opposite Marlon Brando, and tackled on stage by Claire Bloom and Jessica Lange. Rachel saw the film ages ago, but has purposely avoided viewing it again. “This is going to be a brand-new interpretation. So, no copying!” ■ Guy Ritchie isn’t the only director who’s giving Arthur Conan Dolye’s most famous detective an up-date. While Ritchie has cast Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr as Watson and Holmes, writer Stephen Moffat has done a TV pilot drama with Mark Gatiss playing Sherlock and Martin Freeman playing Watson, placing the sleuths firmly in today’s society. Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer my Holmes to be more traditional. And I think that

nobody’s done it better so far than the late, great Jeremy Brett. ■ Some consolation to Ritchie after his messy divorce from Madonna is that his pub in Farm Street, The Punchbowl, is one of the starriest in town. Young royals William and Harry like to pop in for a pint before they hit Whisky Mist on Park Lane; and luvvies Kevin Spacey, Cilla Black, Sophie Dahl and Geri Halliwell are also fans of Guy’s fashionable Mayfair watering hole. ■ Gwyneth Paltrow’s an interesting paradox. She’s happy to watch hubby Chris Martin strut his slender stuff on stage, and enjoys schmoozing backstage with rock royalty. Yet she doesn’t want Chris to share the spotlight with her when she dazzles on the red carpet. She also banks big bucks thanks to lucrative contracts with Estee Lauder and Tod’s, and writes a weekly lifestyle advice blog, GOOP, where she shares her wealth of tips to us mere mortals. I’ve often seen the trendy, organically-aware couple dining at The Woleley, the Riverside Café and La Famiglia in London, with their two adorable young kids, Apple and Moses. I’m just puzzled as to why they loathe being photographed together – and go to elaborate lengths to prevent that happening. La dame rumour has it that the lissom Paltrow is planning to return to the West End stage next year, in a revival of Chekhov’s The Three Sisters, directed by Sean Mathias. Will she want Chris to be front row centre at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, rooting her on? I certainly hope so! ■ If you are planning on paying a visit to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane to see the splendid musical Oliver! this summer, I advise you to dress flimsily. Audiences have staged walkouts, and demanded refunds, amid claims it is “insufferably hot”. Oliver!: Great show but the Theatre Royal Drury Lane can be insufferably hot

Temperatures in the theatre have soared because of hi-tech equipment and lighting being used in musicals. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group, which owns the theatre, wants to solve the problem with a £1.5 million air-conditioning system for the Grade 1-listed building, which is nearly 200 years old. The application is being considered by Westminster Council. In the meantime, be prepared and arrive with fans and bottles of water! ■ Tourists and theatregoers are helping to keep Covent Garden in bloom. Waiting for Godot, starring Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, Calendar Girls and War Horse took almost £5 million in advanced ticket sales, and theatrical watering holes like Joe Allen’s, and the Mexican haunt Wahaca, are booked every night. Forty-seven theatres make their homes in the surrounding area, lining the streets bordered by the Strand, Oxford Street, Regent Street and Kingsway. Covent Garden is resilient because it attracts all sectors of the market – tourists, the office crowd, local London pleasure seekers and culture vultures. It’s also a lot of

■ Lovers of JM Barrie’s Neverland will enjoy the magical new stage production of his immortal Peter Pan, which is on in Kensington Gardens until 30 August. Jason Donovan, Tony Sheldon, Oliver Thornton and the Cockatoos are a hoot in Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical at the Palace Theatre. And Jerry Springer’s having the time of his life playing Billy Flynn in the long-running musical Chicago, at the Aldephi Theatre. “I think the producers must have been having a drink when the came up with my name,” Jerry told me. “This is a whole new world for me – so hold o to your seats!” Linda Mindel Carvell is a London-based style and celebrity editor, who contributes to glossy magazines round the world. Summer has arrived and with it the usual batch of blockbuster movies. Our movie of the month was a toss up between the MICHAEL MANN directed Public Enemies, starring JOHNNY DEPP, (this writer had a fascination as a child with the characters and goings on during the “Roaring” ‘20s and ‘30s), and the chosen one – the latest fantasy-adventure film based on the novel by J. K. ROWLING. Our hero Harry (DANIEL REDCLIFFE) is now in his sixth year at Hogwarts and what a year it turns out to be. Voldemort (RALPH FIENNES) is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe place it once was. Professor Dumbledore (MICHAEL GAMBON) knows trouble is afoot and starts to prepare Harry with the help of his old friend and colleague Professor Horace Slughorn (JIM BROADBENT) for what may lie ahead. Harry comes across a mysterious potions book marked “property of the Half-Blood Prince”. It gives advice on how to improve greatly on his potions work, teaches him a few helpful (and dangerous) spells along the way and unearths dark secrets about Lord Voldemort’s shadowy past that would be best left undiscovered. Once again love is in the air at Hogwarts but so is disaster which awaits at the Astronomy Tower, giving an incredible action-packed climax that is sure to leave the watching public stunned and, inevitably, prove that you shouldn’t trust everybody who you think is good and also that not everyone can manage to survive. Then of course all will be revealed when the final chapter of this ongoing saga – the seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – hits the shelves this month. QUICK CLIPS Three original actors from the Lord of the Rings trilogy are returning to Middle Earth for The Hobbit double flick – prequel project. IAN McKELLEN is back as Gandalf, ANDY SERKIS will be skulking around as Gollum and HUGO WEAVING will put the elf ears on again as Elrond. WES CRAVEN, the horror master behind the originals, is to make another three Scream movies – DAVID ARQUETTE and his spouse COURTNEY COX ARQUETTE have been approached to reprise their roles from the original trilogy. Cameras will roll after the summer.


BIG SCREEN Also, the fourth STEPHANIE MEYER vampire novel Breaking Dawn has been commissioned just as the second movie in The Twilight franchise, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, wraps up in Italy. Work on the third installment, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, is due to start towards the end of the year in Vancouver as main star ROBERT PATTINSON is busy until then on his next film Remember Me, a drama about two lovers whose newfound relationship is threatened as they try to cope with their respective family tragedies. His co-star is EMILIE DE RAVIN of Lost fame and PIERCE BROSMAN is also on board. The Twilight franchise heroine Bella (KIRSTEN STEWART), who is currently working on the bio pic of the 1970s girl group The Runaways, playing Joan Jett, has been joined on set by former child star ALESSANDRA TORRESANI (who will soon be seen in the upcoming TV series Caprica – a spin-off of the Sci-Fi Channel series Battlestar Galactica) as Lita Ford. DAKOTA FANNING is Cherie Curry and TV’s Gossip Girl star STELLA MAEVE plays Sandy West. Another Gossip Girl star, CHACE CRAWFORD, has landed a lead role as Ren McCormack in the remake of Footloose and may find himself going

toe-to-toe with the US Dancing with the Stars pro dancing hottie JULIANNE HOUGH. The 1984 original starred KEVIN BACON and LORI SINGER in the above roles. And there’s a nasty rumour going round that SIMON COWELL is to remake Saturday Night Fever with ZAC EFRON donning the white suit that JOHN TRAVOLTA wore in the 1977 original. Work has just started on The Karate Kid remake featuring WILL SMITH’s son JADEN as a bullied youth who learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor (JACKIE CHAN). TARAJI P. HENSON (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) plays a mother who is forced to move with her son to Beijing to keep her job and as the new kid in town he gets picked on. And another remake, Mona Lisa, starts filming this month in New York with MICKEY ROURKE playing an ex-con who takes a job as a chauffeur for a high-class escort. The 1986 original British gangster film starred BOB HOSKINS and CATHY TYSON, whose role may be taken on by EVA “Vesper Lynd” GREEN. Director ROBERT RODRIGUEZ has many offers on the table at the moment including Sin City 2 and Predators but he has decided Machete is to take top priority. This is a full-length feature based on the trailer seen during the “intermission” of his double feature project in 2007 with QUENTIN TARANTINO, Grindhouse. It will star his old buddy DANNY TREJO, who despite rumours is not starring in SYLVESTER STALLONE’s The Expendables. RODRIGUEZ has also put his mark on a live-action adaptation of 1960s/1980s US cartoon series The Jetsons. But he has pulled out of Universal’s remake of Barbarella as the studio wanted to film in Germany and he didn’t want to travel to Europe – instead the job goes to ROBERT LUKETIC. The original 1968 movie rocketed to cult status and starred JANE FONDA as a 41st century sex kitten who is tasked with saving the earth in her own way. SHIA LaBEOUF has revealed that STEVEN SPIELBERG has contacted him regarding another Indiana Jones flick. In the meantime he is starting on the OLIVER STONE Wall Street sequel (working title of Money Never Sleeps) with MICHAEL DOUGLAS reprising his original role and JAVIER BARDEM portraying the villain. Top producer J.J. ABRAHAMS will reunite with TOM CRUISE to make Mission Impossible 4. But before that the pint-sized actor will star in the 20th Century Fox action comedy Wichita with CAMERON DIAZ. He plays a secret agent who finds himself coming into and out of the life of a single woman.

RIHANNA is taking classes to improve her camera skills as she is to star in a movie that is ironically entitled Personal Protection. He faces up to four years time if convicted of the charges. While gigging the UK last month KATY PERRY had her tour bus broken into while she was on stage in Brighton. She said on Twitter, “Someone just broke into our bus, they got caught. All there is, is glitter, cat suit outfits, fruit & a DVD box set of Absolutely Fabulous”. With that city’s reputation I bet the burglar would have been well happy with that swag had he escaped the clutches of the law. The hyper hyped DOLLY ROCKERS release their official debut single Gold Digger on 27 July. These three chicks have been around since 2006 when they appeared on the UK talent show The X Factor although they did not get past the “boot camp” stage of the competition. They recently hit mainstream with the download single Je Suis Une Dolly (based on BILL WYMAN’s 1981 hit (Si,Si) Je Suis Un Rockstar), which got lots of airplay from BBC Radio 1 DJ SCOTT MILLS. Apparently these girls voice their opinions (THE SATURDAYS were in the firing line recently) and don’t hold back so expect a Twitt bitch with LILY ALLEN in the near future. Talking of Silly LILY, she has been twittering on and on as per usual on the site and got shot down in flames by MARK RONSON when she tried taking the pee (too rude to tell you what it was all about).

Some kind of Superstar POP STAR JAMELIA, WHO IS CURRENTLY RECORDING HER FOURTH ALBUM, TOOK TIME OUT TO TALK TO NICOLA MCGEORGE ABOUT HER DAUGHTERS, CHARITY WORK AND MEETING NELSON MANDELA

J

amelia is, without doubt, one of the UK’s most successful female recording artists. The 28-year-old singer/songwriter from Birmingham has also turned her immense talents to presenting, modelling and acting. However, she didn’t always see herself in the world of showbiz. “I went through dreams of working in many different careers before knowing my destiny was in music,” she recalls. “I wanted to be a teacher, a midwife, a forensic scientist and a child psychologist. I was offered a record deal by chance and it was like a secret dream of mine, so I traded it all for that amazing opportunity. “The first time I knew I had made it was when I heard my song So High on Eastenders. I remember being so overwhelmed and screaming out ‘Oh my God, that’s my song!’ I then proceeded to call my Nan, my aunties, cousins and friends. Even to this day if I hear my song on TV, come across an album of mine in HMV or hear my song on the radio, it feels amazing.” Jamelia has already notched up eight UK top 10 hits, four MOBO awards and a Q award. Her most famous hit, Thank You, was even nominated for a prestigious Ivor Novello Award. “I think people related to this track because it was real and it was evident that it came from a real place,” she explains. “Unfortunately so many people have had some sort of experience with domestic violence and this was one of the first times

the subject had been approached in such a public way. I’m glad I did the song and, in a weird way, glad that I went through what I did, because it meant I got to help people, including myself. It was so great to talk about it and for us all to find that we are not alone.” Her biggest inspirations are her two gorgeous daughters, eight-year-old Teja and Tiani, aged three. “I owe it all to becoming a mother. I know that, had I not, I wouldn’t enjoy the successes I do or have the inner determination and motivation for all I do today. My daughters are my world and every step I take is for the betterment and good of them. I want my children to be proud of their mother and I am especially proud when I see how polite my daughters are... I think to myself, I did that.” As a noted style icon, fashion is also a big part of Jamelia’s life. She describes her look as sexy, sassy and sensational, mixing High Street labels such as H&M and American Apparel with designers such as Dolce & Gabbanna, Marios Schwab and Jimmy Choo. I have spotted her on many occasions at London Fashion Week, so I had to ask what are her favourite shows… “Jenny Packham, I just love her stuff, and she gave me one of my wedding dresses (yeah, I had two!). In 2007 she appeared in a high-profile poster campaign shot by Mary McCartney for the animal rights charity PETA, because she feels that “wearing animal fur is disgusting”. She appeared naked under the headline, “Be comfortable in your own skin and let animals keep theirs”. At the end of 2007, she was invited to perform on stage for Nelson Mandela’s World Aids Day. She performed the hit singles Something About You, See It In A Boy‘s Eyes and Superstar. “It was an experience I never 28

imagined having, one so many dream of.” she says. “I feel extremely fortunate to have been in his presence and to have had three opportunities to converse with such an inspirational individual.” This year, with the support of her daughters, she took part in the Brantano New for Old campaign in aid of Tommy’s Baby Charity, which encourages people to drop off their old shoes and in turn help babies in the UK and support deprived communities across Africa. Last year Jamelia married her long-term partner, professional footballer Darren Byfield. Even though she was featured in COED Magazine Online’s list of “The 50 Sexiest WAGS of World Football”, it is a title she does not want to be associated with. “Having a partner who is a footballer isn’t really of any significance to me. As long as he is a good man

who gives me what I need and is interested in building something great with me, I’m happy. I do get offended being referred to as a WAG, as the term describes a certain type of girl, the type of girl I am most definitely not.” Good for her, I say! So what does the future hold for this ambitious lady? “I’m currently recording my fourth studio album; I call it ‘kick in the door’ music. I’m actually interested in working with up-and-coming producers, as I think they are less likely to be stuck in their ways and will be willing to take risks creatively. They’ll also hunger for success! “I just got my first lead in a movie, which I start filming in August, and I have a TV series which I start filming in September. Other than that I’m just loving life and appreciating all of its blessings right now.“

Charity golf tournament in aid of Niños Mariposa The seventh Charity Golf Tournament in aid of Niños Mariposa – sponsored by Linea Direct and Marina Banús – raised a generous ¤59,000 towards a home in Marbella for people affected by the Butterfly skin condition. Despite the poor weather, 190 players took part in the tournament which unfolded over a Saturday afternoon, with the club donating ¤8,000 in green fees to the worthy cause. Prizes were awarded after play by the president of Aloha Golf and representatives from CAM bank, Marina Banús and Marbella Town Hall. This became even more clear to me last month when – with our KS Marine department becoming increasingly active – I accepted an invitation to Monaco on board one of the most fabulous boats I have ever been on. Not so much for its size (100 feet) but more for its stunning finish. The bedroom suite, for example, has such a huge sitting room and terrace it could almost be a luxury villa! They only build one a year and, with a 60,000-litre fuel tank, it is ideal for trans-Atlantic trips. It is two years old and we have it on the market for ¤24 million. As I was looking over this marvellous boat I realised two things. First of all, we also have some amazing boats berthed in the marinas along the Costa del Sol, especially Puerto Banús, that rival the best in the world. And secondly, after meeting two people at the party who I knew from Marbella, it occurred to me that there is definitely a social “circuit” around the world that includes Côte d’Azur,

New York, London, Gstaad, Monaco, Sardinia, Rome, the Balearics – and Marbella. That is, involving people who have homes in two or even more of those areas, and meet up on a regular basis at glamorous international events. When I say Marbella has nothing to envy any of these places, I am referring to everything from the weather to the lifestyle, and this is certainly the case as far as property is concerned. In Monaco, for example, they have few green areas and it is nearly all apartment blocks (villas are a rarity) – most of them without pools! In Marbella, on the other hand, we have an unrivalled range of properties, golfing possibilities, etc. While in Monaco, I attended a charity gala in aid of under-privileged children. Obviously this is not a problem so much in Monaco, but there are many youngsters in the south of France who need support from those who are fortunate enough to be able to help. One of my most thrilling experiences was walking in the gardens near the casino and Hotel de Paris, where – as part of a campaign to save eagles – artists were asked to set up their own projects.

One special artist and sculpturer featured at the exhibition, which will be on show throughout summer, is a well-known personality in Marbella, Owanto. Another highlight was a separate display by one of my favourite artists and sculpturers, Manuel Valdés. Going to Tangier is quite easy, just 35 minutes from Tarifa, and I travelled to a residential complex we represent on the Atlantic coast. There are 15 apartments left on the market and the developers are offering a special deal on two. The normal prices vary from ¤300,000 to ¤360,000, the apartments are very spacious (from 170 to 225 square metres) and they are finished to the same standards as luxury apartments in Marbella. They are very beautiful and almost completed. Back in Marbella, the annual feria was another fun-filled week – the town shown at its festive best. Once again this year a group of friends created a private “members club” especially for the fair, turning Pozo Viejo into a caseta, and treating their guests to some wonderful times. That same week we were guests at a beautiful wedding in San Pedro church for my friends Begoña and Ernesto’s son Alex and his new wife Belén. It was a true “boda rociera” – with traditional music originating from the annual pilgrimage to the village of Rocío in Huelva. Begoña invited her friends to a special dinner on the eve of the wedding at La Meridiana, and the reception the next day was held at Puente Romano, a beautiful open-air dinner followed by dancing at Suite. I love tradition, and there was an amazing garden party at my Spanish friends Pura and José Manuel’s home, a very happy occasion with a fine orchestra of young musicians and the “raising of the flag” to show our hosts’ love of Spain and patriotism. As I have mentioned in previous Diaries, national and international TV channels are very interested in featuring Marbella and last month I was invited to appear on the prime-time Esta Mañana magazine programme on TVE 1. What an experience! It was a huge studio, completely different to my local TV appearances, with big cranes and lots of lights. Sometimes the TV coverage we receive is not as good as one


would like but nevertheless it is always publicity for Marbella. I have a distinct sense that the situation is getting back to normal; people are happier and enjoying themselves, with numerous lunches, dinners – and, most importantly, doing business. Then there is the imminent approval of Marbella’s PGOU town planning and urban rezoning plan. The other day I spoke to Cesar and Marta Repiso from Oviedo, who settled in Marbella with their families five years ago, living and working here, and they said, “We wish we could have moved here a long time ago?” This is a situation I come across quite often: Marbella really is in vogue and not only for people wanting a holiday home, but also to settle and possibly work here. Nearly every sale we have made over the past three months has been 30 per cent lower than the price expected last year, and this means the market has stabilised. It is still sometimes difficult to get buyers and sellers to agree, but in general I believe we have reached the lowest level – and the real estate market is now more in balance. Finally, another reminder that the Rotary charity black-tie gala dinner is on 18 July at Finca La Concepción. I will be the new president by then and I hope there will be a big attendance, as it is the middle of summer, with warm nights, a wonderful venue, dancing under the stars and fantastic prizes. Pure power personified WHEN VOLKSWAGEN VISIONARY FERDINAND PIËCH DECLARED THAT HE WANTED TO CREATE A CONCEPT SPORTS CAR THAT COULD TOP 400 KM/H AND 1000 HP, HIS ENGINEERS WERE INCLINED TO HEAD TO THE NEAREST PSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTION. INSTEAD, THEY ADJOURNED TO THE BUGATTI WORKSHOP WHERE, BY 2005, THEY HAD MET HIS DEMANDING CHALLENGE

t was a suitably impressed local press contingent that arrived at the Bugatti dealership in Marbella one day late in 2006 – and not just because of the free cava and canapés that are press contingents’ customary raison d’être for venturing out during the day. The star of the presentation – sitting resplendent and simply awesome in the centre of the showroom – was the Veyron 16.4. It was revealed that just 300 of them would be produced, over 100 had already been ordered, and 30 had been handed over to their expectant owners – a veritable snip at ¤1.1 million euros each. Now we fast-forward to earlier this year, when Bugatti announced the sale of the 200th Veyron (one of the treasured FBG par Hermès models). The new owner was a “Middle East customer”, which makes complete sense

because with fuel consumption of 17 lt/100km for highway driving, through 29 lt/100km for the city and up to 78 lt/100km at its top speed of 400 km/h, the Veyron 16.4 is not meant to be the plaything of those of us who become overly anxious when fuel prices rise. Not that it would be wise to consider the Veyron a play-thing: this is a serious sports driving machine, capable of reaching 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and a top speed (in 50 seconds) which surpasses that of F1 racing cars (which generally top out at 360 km/h). In fact, the engineers given the task of fulfilling Ferdinand Piëch’s lofty ambitions had to use state-of-the-art FI expertise to build a car that would achieve this sort of power without becoming air-borne. (The finished model generates so much power it has no engine cover and has to be cooled with 10 radiators!)

The seven-speed double-clutch paddle gearbox took a team of 50 engineers five years to fine-tune, with Volkswagen using British company Ricardo, which makes gearboxes for F1 cars. The Veyron was tested in Sauber’s F1 wind tunnel where the engineers discovered they had achieved 1000 hp but not the 400 km/h demanded by Piëch. It was not sufficiently aerodynamic, and – after much hand-ringing and late-night brainsstorming – they devised the idea of creating a car that could change shape according to the speed: adjusting the back spoiler, reducing ground clearance, and opening and closing the lids all combine to ensure the ideal balance between propulsion and downforce. At 200 km/h the nose is lowered and the spoiler slides into the slipstream; at 370 km/h, the car is lowered even more and the back wing comes down. The 16-cylinder four-wheel drive Veyron balances high-powered performance with a sleek design that “honours a great heritage without drifting off into retro style”. For a constant speed of 250 km/h, it only needs 270-280 hp, which means the seven-gear 60

clutch transmission works with a torque of up to 1,250 Newton meters; while the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) ensures the necessary flexibility and manoeuvrability at any speed. Just as impressively, the Veyron’s ceramic brakes slow it down faster than it can accelerate: it needs a mere 2.3 seconds to come to a standstill from 100 km/h. Furthermore, to reduce the risk of injuries in accidents, Bugatti had a Formula 1 safety concept adapted for the Veyron. In an appropriate link with its celebrated history, the Veyron production facility is located in Molsheim near the former Bugatti headquarters at Chateau St Jean. Eight “carefully selected and highly qualified” employees assemble the Veyron piece by piece in a spartan workshop. No more than one or two vehicles are produced per week, and each one requires nearly three weeks of meticulous assembly. Owners are able to witness this creative process first-hand at the Bugatti birthplace, before finally powering out into the streets of Alsace behind the wheel of a stunning machine that is, arguably, the fastest car on the road.

Jackie Llewelyn-Bowen recently went from a size 18 to a 12 on the controversial diet plan and said: “I’ve felt so well on this diet – better than I’ve felt for ages.” But a reduced calorie programme can bring about side effects such as gallstones, fatigue, nausea and diarrhoea and a 40-year-old mother of five died recently after consuming four litres of water in two hours.

Alli diet pill An over-the-counter pill to aid weight loss when taken with a balanced low-fat diet. It can help people lose 50 per cent more fat than dieting alone by stopping the fat from being absorbed. But that means the fat has to go somewhere, leading to unpleasant side effects. The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain issued pharmacists with guidance for the drug. Its overall assessment of Orlistat (the ingredient found in alli) is that it can help achieve steady, gradual weight loss, when used as directed. Big Brother’s Kinga tried the pills after a constant battle with her weight and said she experienced some of the worst diarrhoea of her life. Even worse, she said: “One morning, a week into taking the tablets, I woke up with a huge, dark yellow, oily stain all over my sheets. “Fat, which looked exactly like olive oil, had been leaking out of my bottom. It was disgusting.” Kinga lost a stone (6.5 kilograms) in a month but said she would never use alli again.

Martha’s Vineyard detox diet A detox diet to cleanse the body of toxins and help you lose weight at the same time. Only to be followed for two, seven or 21 days at a time. The diet requires you to eat up to 20 portions of liquidised fruit and veg a day while consuming supplements and enzymes – no solid food or alcohol. Angelina Jolie used the detox diet, losing 21 pounds (9.5 kilograms) in 21 days, to prepare for her role in her up-and-coming film Salt, where she has to disguise herself as a man. The star feared her curves would be unconvincing in the role but colleagues expressed their concern as she appeared weak and suffered fatigue on set.

FOUR WAYS TO SHAKE YOURSELF FIT Are you bored with your regular exercise routine and looking for quick results? Then it’s time to shake, rattle or roll. According to new research, women who worked out on one of the most popular forms of vibrational exercise machines – the Power Plate – lost almost twice as much weight as those who did more conventional sports (when combined with dieting and regular use). Madonna and Kylie are fans of the machines, which cause muscles to contract and relax more frequently than in normal exercise, leading to greater calorie loss. According to Nahid de Belgeonne, director of Good Vibes, three classes a week will get you into shape for a holiday and instructors will select exercises to target your chosen problem areas. “The vibrations transfer energy to the body and trigger rapid muscle contractions,” says Belgeonne. “In a 25-minute workout, you can effectively train every muscle.” Does it work? Although there is little scientific evidence on the merits of vibration platforms, anyone who has used them will tell you how they leave you with thighs of concrete after just a few minutes. A review by the American Council on Exercise, a watchdog for the US fitness industry, concluded “conceptually, it has merit” but added there was insufficient scientific research to support the fitness claims made. “It is not a magic bullet that helps people to lose weight without doing anything else.”

Flexi-Bar What is it? A class that mixes conventional weights and exercises using a Flexi-Bar, a fitness tool that looks like a plastic garden cane with rubber pieces attached to the middle and ends. Devised by German physiotherapists as a therapeutic tool, it has become a popular training aid for athletes looking to improve their core strength. To operate it, you shake the bar forcibly a couple of times until momentum takes over. Against this vibration you perform various

You need to be inventive to work your upper body on an Indo Board, but your legs, bottom and core will become supremely toned. It is important that the laser you choose is FDA cleared to meet official standards. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) uses a very high energy beam at high intensity levels to destroy the hair follicle. The Alexandrite achieves good results but is only recommended for very fair skins. The YAG – which we use – is a softer laser which shows excellent results and can be used on all skin tones and types. Is it true that you cannot expose your skin to the sun for some time following laser treatment? With medical and more conventional lasers you cannot go in the sun for some time after laser treatment. The YAG laser is a softer laser which means it can be used during the summer months when skin is regularly exposed to the sun. Some lasers are so intense that further exposure to the sun will damage the skin too much. Following IPL laser, you cannot go into the sun for some months; following treatment with the YAG, you can go into the sun after just one or two days. 82

How does laser compare to waxing? A main advantage is that there are no ingrowing hairs as a result of laser treatment. You don’t need much re-growth before laser and the skin improvement with laser is massive. In short, the result is a smoother re-growth and smoother skin.

How much hair growth do I need to have before a laser treatment? Very little. Just the very first growth within a day of shaving for example. How many treatments do I have to have to see results? It really depends on the person but the hair removal can sometimes take effect immediately. I ask the client to come back for a follow-up treatment within the first three weeks of the initial treatment (both visits to the salon are included in one price). How does the laser work? It cauterises or destroys the hair follicle, which makes it take much longer for the hair to build its root and grow again. What effect does laser treatment have on the skin? It depends largely on which laser you choose but the YAG gives a deep exfoliating effect and the skin improves dramatically. The laser literally lifts the whole top layer of skin – a result which cannot be achieved with products or a loofah. Which parts of the body can be treated by laser? Everywhere – legs, bikini, arms, underarms, face, buttocks – except the area directly underneath the eyebrow. Is laser recommended for men? Yes, absolutely! Laser is very popular with men who have treatment on all areas including the back, chest, legs… Men are increasingly expressing the fact that they don’t want or like body hair.

Q

Can you tell me more about the possible side effects of scarring after a surgical peel or laser resurfacing? I have very fair skin but scar very easily. What would be the best option for me?

Q

I am well over 60 but reasonably fit; I go to the gym three times a week and keep myself very busy. I had children quite late in life and it has left me with unwanted skin and stretch marks around the waist. Would I be a good candidate for a tummy tuck or am I too old?

A.

The skin of each patient needs to be assessed in a physical examination, because some skin types are not suitable for deep resurfacing procedures. The fact that you simply have a fair skin type does not mean automatically that you can’t have a deep peel or a laser treatment, but in some cases the application procedure and the concentration of the peel must be adapted to your skin. Any kind of deep peeling procedure has a potential risk of scarring if the peeling reaches deep dermal structures, so it is paramount that the treating doctor evaluate your skin to minimise that risk. Taking this into account, a deep peeling or a laser resurfacing can provide a safe alternative to surgical rejuvenation procedures, and remove acne scars and deeply pigmented lesions.

A. If you are physically fit, a tummy tuck procedure can be safely

performed at your age. Aesthetic surgery is very often performed on older patients, and under the conditions named above they have no more risk then younger patients. Recovery may take a bit longer, depending on the kind of procedure, but outcome and aesthetic result can be equally good. Also scarring tends to be less prominent in older patients due to less collagen production.

Q

Just recently I heard about how Botox can be used for preventing over-productive sweat glands. How long does it last and does it have different reactions to men and women. Also, how long does it really stay in your system, even after the treatment has worn off?

A. Botox, or Botulinus Toxin, can indeed be used to reduce

the sweating in people with a medical condition called hyperhidrosis. Botox works in the human body by blocking the signal from the nerves to the muscles, thereby reducing or preventing the contraction of the muscles in the treated area temporarily (five to seven months). In the case of hyperhidrosis the Botox treatment blocks on the one hand the signal transmission from the nerves to the sweat glands and on the other, induces an inhibition of contraction of the muscle cells of the sweat glands, therefore inhibiting effectively the production and the excretion of sweat. Before the first treatment, a thorough assessment of the extent of the overactive area is performed and the treatment is applied by multiple injections within the area (armpits or palms). Botox is degraded quite quickly and the effect on the whole body is negligible when used in doses needed for aesthetics or hyperhidrosis. IT’S BARBECUE TIME SO THE SUMMER HEAT IS WELL AND TRULY WITH US AND, AS GILLAINE HATHAWAY NOTES, IN THIS WONDERFUL CLIMATE IT IS A GREAT TIME TO PREPARE MEALS ON THE TERRACE OR IN THE GARDEN – WHERE THE ALL-IMPORTANT BARBECUE COMES INTO FULL PLAY

W

e all know that men think they are great at cooking in the open air, and have all “enjoyed” burnt sausages, etc., but remember that in Spain cooking in the open air dates back to times past. In olden days homes did not have indoor ovens because it was too hot, and most cooking was done on the top of the stove. There was also very little firewood available so they used olive pits, dried grape twigs or charcoal made by smoldering bush branches, which burn relatively free of smoke, as chimneys were unknown. Come the summer then, cooking in the open air was easily adapted and the pleasure of cooking over an open fire on the beach or in the garden became a tradition. Though indoor preparations simmered on dying fires for long periods of time, outdoors they were cooked rapidly and, as the province of Málaga is famous for its fish and its variety, many of the recipes were based on the sea. But whether you cook meat or fish another important part of successful barbecuing is the marinade. That is what make barbecued food so delicious, whoever cooks it! Another advantage of barbecuing is that, not only is it a great time-saving way to cook, but it also avoids a lots of dirty saucepans. But it is important to care for your barbecue. If it gets dirty it becomes unhygienic and inefficient to cook with. Clean it as you go along to save a bigger cleaning job. It is also a good idea to line the drip tray with a double thickness of aluminium foil and a layer of

commercially available barbecue soak or claytype kitty litter. When it becomes completely fat-soaked, simply wrap the litter in the foil and dispose of it, before re-lining the tray. Then when you have finished cooking on the grill allow the flames to burn on high for another five minutes so that any fat and stuck-on residue burns off and carbonises. Anything remaining is then very simple to scrape off. Scrape down the hotplate after every use, using a metal brush, and remove any accumulated fat and debris with paper towels. If your barbecue has an oven hood, wipe it down while it’s still warm, using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. Then wipe the outside of the barbecue and spray the grill and hotplate with a light coating of cooking oil to keep it lubricated and rust-free. Known as “costillas” in Spain pork ribs are delicious cooked on a barbecue, though this is also a recipe that you can cook indoors under a hot grill. If you want a sweeter flavour try using freshly squeezed orange juice instead of sweet sherry.

Barbecued mini ribs (serves 6 to 8) Ingredients: 1 kilo pork ribs 6 tablespoons sweet oloroso sherry 1 tablespoon tomato puree 1 teaspoon soy sauce 1/2 teaspoon Tabasco 1 tablespoon brown sugar 2 tablespoons flour seasoned with sea salt and pepper 1 tablespoon sea salt ■ Separate the ribs, then, using a meat cleaver or a heavy knife, cut each rib in half widthways to make about 30 pieces. ■ Mix the sherry, tomato purée, soy sauce, Tabasco and sugar in a bowl. Stir in half a teaspoon of salt.

■ Put the seasoned flour in a strong plastic bag, then add the ribs and toss to coat. ■ Dip each rib in the sauce. Cook on the barbecue for 30 to 40 minutes, turning occasionally until cooked and a little charred. Sprinkle with salt and serve. So now on to chicken and a recipe that come from Cataluña. Aniseed is an important part of this dish and really gives it a “zing”.

Grilled chicken wings (serves 4) Ingredients: 12 chicken wings 2 tablespoons fennel seeds 2 tablespoons thyme (dried will do) 1 tablespoon salt approx. 2 tablespoons olive oil ■ Put the fennel seeds into a pestle and mortar with the salt, gently grind the seeds and then mix in the thyme. ■ Lay the wings out on a tray and rub in the olive oil as this will help the rub to stick, then sprinkle on the rub and work it into the wings. ■ Leave to marinade for a minimum of 15 minutes and then grill for around 20 minutes, turning regularly. Serve immediately. Of course, no Spanish barbecue would be complete without plenty of fish and there is nothing tastier than sardines, especially with a dash of dry sherry! Such an easy dish… but you have to make sure your fish is fresh and gutted, with the cavity washed out (something your fishmonger will be happy to do for you). You also need to give a light coating of oil on the barbecue rack to stop the sardines from sticking. www.societylivingmagazine.com

TASTES OF SPAIN smooth paste. Scoop out into a serving bowl and leave to cool. ■ When ready to serve toast the bread lightly on the barbecue and spoon on some of the aubergine and pepper mix. A simpler version, and also a great accompaniment to any barbecued dish, is toasting the bread and simply spreading with tomato. You can make as much as you like of the tomato topping and keep it covered in the fridge to use again and again.

Sardinas al Jerez (serves 4 to 6) Ingredients: 1/2 kilo sardines 4 tablespoons dry sherry 2 teaspoons honey approx. 2 teaspoons of sea salt and 1 of black pepper 1 lemon for the garnish ■ Put the sherry and honey into a small bowl and mix together until you have a nice consistency. ■ Place the sardines in a rack on medium coals. Season with salt and pepper and brush on the glaze. Cook for around 10 minutes and turn over and re-coat with the glaze. After a further 10 minutes remove, transfer to a hot dish and serve with lemon wedges and a green salad. On now to grilled prawns, the shellfish king of Spanish food, which you can simply griddle just as they are with heads and shells on. Though great on their own, barbecued prawns taste even better with a freshly made garlic and basil oil.

Gambas con salsa (serves 4) Ingredients: 1 kilo prawns with heads and shells on 100 ml extra virgin olive oil juice of half a lemon 4 garlic cloves, peeled and very finely chopped 2 basil leaves, finely chopped 1/2 teaspoon salt pinch of freshly ground black pepper ■ Add the olive oil to a small mixing bowl with the lemon juice, garlic, basil, salt and pepper. Mix quickly to emulsify the mixture and set aside. 88

■ Heat up the barbecue and throw on the prawns. Cook on one side for one minute. Turn and cook for another minute. ■ Pile onto a plate with a bowl of the garlic and basic oil in the centre and serve. Each person shells their own prawns, being careful not to burn their fingers, and then dips the shellfish into the oil. The following roasted pepper and aubergine dish is a great accompaniment for the ribs and chicken wings or simply as a “tapa” on its own. It is, of course, great for vegetarians. But you have to make sure your barbecue is really, really hot.

Roasted aubergine and red peppers (serves 4 to 6) Ingredients: 2 aubergines 2 red peppers 2 cloves garlic 4 tablespoons olive oil juice of half a lemon salt and pepper to taste a little chopped chili (or substitute chili powder) 1 tablespoon coriander, chopped slices of bread for toasting ■ Prick the aubergines with a fork and place them on the hot grill together with the peppers. Let them char and blacken for about 30 minutes, turning regularly. Then remove and place in a bowl, cover with cling film and leave to cool. ■ Slice the aubergines lengthways and scoop out the flesh into a food processor. Peel the black skin off the peppers, slice into long strips, discarding the stem and seeds, and add to the aubergines. ■ Add the other ingredients (except for the bread) and process until you have a nice

Pan con tomate (serves however many you wish) Ingredients: 1/2 kilo ripe tomatoes, skinned, seeded and chopped 2 generous tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons salt 2 or 3 cloves of garlic slices of local bread ■ Mix the tomatoes, olive oil and salt together in a bowl. Toast the bread on the barbecue grill lightly, halve a garlic clove, and scrape the garlic across the bread. Spoon the tomato mix on top and enjoy! All barbecue dishes are, of course, accompanied by plenty of wine and, as for a dessert, well how about putting a great plate of fresh seasonal fruit in centre of the table and let guests help themselves.

Social fusion A gastronomic journey of exotic artistry

I

t was an invitation from culinary heaven. When Schilo Van Coevorden asked Society Living’s Fay Jones to arrange for a select group of gourmands to savour one of his celebrated tasting menus there was no shortage of colleagues clamouring to volunteer their journalistic services for the evening. The more delicate task was finding five guests to accompany them and photographer Johnny Gates. They obviously had to be true lovers of fine cuisine, excited at the prospect of savouring what Schilo describes as his eclectic mix of world gastronomy. But it was just as important that they reflect the similarly eclectic melting pot of people who live on the Coast – cosmopolitan, widely travelled, successful in business, genuinely delighted to be part of the Costa del Sol’s fascinating fusion of cultures and, quite simply, good company over dinner. In that sense, the evening was essentially about people, about enjoying the intimate experience of

watching Schilo and his team at work (our table was set up next to the serving bar of the openplan kitchen), about discovering the pleasures of a restaurant that oozes sophistication and chic innovation while also offering a warm ambience of convivial informality – plus, of course, impeccably professional service. In short, the eponymous Schilo restaurant at Finca Cortesín resort in Casares was the perfect setting for Society’s Living’s fledgling gourmet club, and the first members of this exclusive group certainly ensured it was a memorable evening. Joining us were Inge Losak (Alcazaba Hills Resort), from Estonia; Jules Franken (Bryce Franken), English with a little Welsh in there as well; Thomas Unger (Loft Design), a Swiss who lived in South Africa for various years; Alexander Corsell (Jensen Beds), a Swede from Malmö; and Englishman Gordon Powell (Chill Out Beds). Fay, Society Living’s sales director, is also originally from England; Johnny Gates is an

avowed Welshman who will, in a weak moment, admit to some English blood; and the chronicler of the evening (who picked the long straw back at the office), is Australian. Schilo’s main objective is to provide clients with a rich and (in the true sense of the word) unique demonstration of his love for Asian influences, with a touch of Arabic exoticism added to the mix, as well as fresh local produce. To that end he offers the choice of two different tasting menus each night. In our case, after various snacks and canapés, we were treated to tuna belly served with a garden-style salad (including flower petals), accompanied by saki. This was followed by an earthy salad of daikon root, asparagus, avocado and Japanese sauces, and a bottle of Condesa Eylo Verdejo. Next was an exquisite lobster cappuccino (not to be mistaken for the dreadful foam that makes its appearance in too many “nouveau” dishes

these days); then soft shell crab topped with nuts and a citrus garnish; and gyoza (ravioli) foie gras with truffle grating. Then, as a bottle of “joven” López Cristóbal from Ribera del Duero was opened, came Schilo’s pièce de résistance: Kobe beef. At least it was the pièce until we were served an encore of berries with saki sorbet, and one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, the “Finca Cortesín Olive Tree” – chocolate in the form of an olive tree (accompanied by a Par Naranja dessert wine from Huelva). So what was our guests’ verdict? Enthused Inge, “Everything was simply perfect: superb setting, in a “chic Andalucian” finca, sumptuous décor, candlelight… exquisite food, professional waiting staff and, last but not least, most enjoyable company.” Inge admitted to not being able to recall the names of all the dishes from the “exceptional” tasting menu, but said it was evident that Schilo was using the best quality (locally grown) ingredients for his “fusion cuisine masterpieces, with some of the most amazing designs”. She also noted that the chef’s own charisma was undoubtedly an important ingredient in the establishment’s success. “Its ambience is without equal on the Coast, his cooking is ambitious and up to the highest international standards, and no less important is his open, friendly attitude – not always seen among many chefs. “It was a truly memorable evening: a sophisticated dining experience that was both worldly and home-grown, and dining companions second to none. I can only think of one thing that would make it even more perfect: the possibility of staying the night in the beautiful boutique hotel!”

Commented Jules, “After many conversations with countless friends who had had the privilege of eating at Schilo I was delighted to be invited to enjoy an evening of indulgence there with Society Living magazine.” Jules noted that evenings at Schilo really begin with the hotel itself, “the beautiful Finca Cortesín nestled in the foothills of Casares. The entrance to the hotel is understated and elegant, belying the opulence inside. Moroccan chill area, elegant colonial bar and terraces that span the length of the hotel, overlooking the countryside.” As for the restaurant … “It has been designed to induce intimacy between the chef and his guests, and we were entertained during the evening with his witty stories and delicious food.” Jules said that, without a doubt, her favourite dish would have to have been the Kobe beef. “But just when you thought you had no more room left for another morsel they present you with the chocolate tree, a fantasy plate of a hand-crafted Belgian chocolate tree surrounded by edible foliage – fantastic.” The Kobe was also a highlight for Tom, though by no means the only high point. “As for the rest of the evening, I can only say, wow! The unpretentious indoor setting yields ‘casual’ dining at its very best.” Tom said that, from start to finish, he would rate the restaurant 10 out of 10. “And the fact that the chef does it all in front of you and comes out to speak to the clients is a nice little touch for sure.” As a diabetic, he needs to take special care when eating out in restaurants, and later he revealed, “I thought I would give that a miss for once, checking before I had dinner, injecting my insulin and all that – just enjoy the night out without all those instruments. I took a slight

chance of having a high blood sugar level when I got home, but the total opposite happened, which means the food was light on carbohydrates and sugars and was certainly very fresh. “I can only recommend it be tried over and over again, although I gave that fantastic looking chocolate dessert a miss! (Schilo produced a stunning fruit platter as an alternative). I’m looking forward to some other experiences in the future at Schilo.” For Alex, “It was an evening and experience outside the box. This is a true food journey with all sorts of amazing impressions and tastes. Great food for all senses. It was impressive, absolutely stunning in tastes, variety and aesthetics. You can really tell this comes from a chef who lives to cook and create quality. He clearly loves food and loves even more to share it with the world.” As for the ambience, Alex said, “We really forgot why we were there. The whole atmosphere in the restaurant gave us a very comfortable and relaxed feeling. You felt you were in good hands with the staff and everything flowed like water in a creek. Smooth.” His favourite dish was also the Kobe beef, “but mostly because I love red meat. I also enjoyed all the little small dishes. The chicken starter, in particular, was delicious. I think this is a place every person who enjoys new food experiences should visit.” And a final word from Gordon… “The sheer variety was enormous – so incredibly diverse. The atmosphere was super, the staff were ultra efficient without being intrusive, and the view of the team preparing dishes and working in the kitchen really adds to the place. You could almost write a book about the tastes of the flowers, and there were so many unusual fruits I can’t remember their names.” Apart from the Kobe beef (“obviously”), Gordon said, “I have to say the work and image of the chocolate tree was absolutely amazing, a work of art. “It’s the complete experience for diners. The evening was simply mind-blowing. I can’t think of a single thing I wouldn’t give it 10 out of 10 for. Thai-style mussels Ingredients: 200-240 ml coconut cream 1/2 tbsp ginger 1/2 chilli 20g fresh coriander 50g red onions, diced 50g red pepper, diced 2 handfuls mussels 50 ml white wine 1 stick lemongrass Steam the ingredients (apart from the coriander and coconut cream) with the mussels in a dash of white wine. When the mussels open (which usually takes around two minutes) add the coconut cream. Reduce slightly. Finish by adding the fresh coriander and serve.

Cream the butter and the sugar together and melt the chocolate. Add to the creamed butter, along with the flour, baking powder, eggs and pistachios. Line a baking tin and bake in the over for an hour. For the sauce, cream the chocolate and the butter. Serve warm with good quality or homemade vanilla ice cream.

Grind the spices, chillies and onion into a paste. Slow cook with oil for two to three minutes to release the flavours. Add the coconut milk (about two to three tablespoons of paste to one litre of milk). Next add the king prawns and mixed vegetables into the sauce, bring to the boil and simmer for four minutes. Add salt, sugar and fish sauce to taste. Garnish with reduced coconut milk and fresh basil and serve with basmati rice.

The wood theme continues throughout the main restaurant and covered terrace to the outdoor decking where customers can relax with coffee or drinks, and enjoy lunch, dinner or a light snack from the salad or antipasti menu. The term “authentic” is often over-used when it comes to Italian food, but the menu at Dual truly does encapsulate fine Italian cuisine with an all-Italian kitchen and restaurant team which stand the venue a cut above many other Italian restaurants. Moving away from the over-sized portions which are often typically Italian, dishes served at Dual are notably elegant with an emphasis on the finest ingredients, presentation and delicate flavours. Pasta dishes are fresh, colourful and bursting with creativity and flavour. The chef’s specialities include spaghetti with soft-shell crab and tiger prawns in a shellfish sauce; spaghetti with clams from Cantabria; taglioni with spiny lobster; and tortellini with cream and porcini mushrooms.

The fresh fish selection is a feast for the eyes and particularly enticing at this time of year. A house favourite is the mouth-watering tartar of red tuna from Barbate with a light dressing, but equally delicious are the warm monkfish with aromatic herbs; sea bass with soya beans, cherry tomatoes and basil; and the classic Italian fresh fish “al cartoccio”, which is baked in paper for guaranteed moisture and extra flavour. Succulent meat dishes are another speciality at Dual and include beef julienne sautéed with rocket salad, parmesan and balsamic vinegar; veal fillet wrapped with Parma ham and sage; ovenbaked rack of lamb; and the finest solomillo grilled with pepper and gorgonzola. And not forgetting Dual’s famous pizzas, which are baked to perfection in a traditional pizza oven and come in irresistible combinations such as the Saporto with mozzarella, tomato, bacon and rosemary; Gambereti with prawns, courgette and parsley; and the ever-popular Dante with San Daniele ham, cherry tomato, rocket and parmesan. The event, which was supported by 80 volunteers, raised over ¤44,300. Meanwhile, plans are now underway for the second annual Wow Factor talent competition,

organised by Talk Radio Europe, Steve Shappelle and Cudeca. This year the competition, which is open to solo singers and vocal groups (like Girls Aloud or Westlife) though not bands, will be held in three locations – Benidorm, Gibraltar and the Costa del Sol – and feature celebrity judges for the final and semi-finals. leading over-35 amateurs playing in Europe, was won by Englishman Stephen East, who beat his compatriot Nigel Sweet, the overnight leader, by one shot; with Brazilian Rodrigo Lacerda third, another stroke back.

FUENGIROLA ZOO BIRTH OF PYGMY HIPPOPOTAMUS A third baby pygmy hippopotamus has been born at Fuengirola Zoo, as part of its internationally recognised reproductive programme. This was the third time the species, which is at serious risk of extinction, has been reproduced at the zoo. Scientists had been convinced the species had disappeared from Liberia, but hidden cameras arranged by the London Zoological Society last year discovered examples still living in the jungle. It is estimated that in the entire Guinean jungle there are no more than 3,000 examples, though there has not been a recent census, so the figures are not precise.
