Job Summary

The Director of Recreation Programs is a Department head position, reporting directly to the Executive Director and responsible for all operations of the Recreation Programs Department. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to producing, implementing, and administering comprehensive programs to meet the recreational and leisure needs of the District; selects, trains, supervises, evaluates, and coordinates activities of subordinate Department personnel and delegates appropriate responsibilities; prepares and administers the Department budget, develops and maintains necessary records on a current and accurate basis; and submits various reports to the Executive Director and Board of Directors as requested.

Job Requirements

The ideal candidate must be a passionate, creative, constructive and high performing leader who can shape and carry forward a dynamic vision for the Department. South Suburban Parks and Recreation is looking for a progressive and talented Director or senior Recreation professional with solid leadership skills.  Candidates must have extensive knowledge and experience in many or all aspects of Recreation Programs. NRPA Gold Medal and CAPRA accreditation experience preferred. 

A Bachelor's Degree in Recreation, Leisure Services, Public or Business Administration, or a related field is required. A Master's Degree is preferred. Certified Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE) and/or Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) preferred. A minimum of five (5) years of increasingly responsible management and administrative experience in public program administration, project planning, personnel leadership and recreation program management. Experience working with Boards, Commissions, community associations and/or partner agencies for at least five (5) years. Management experience in a Department with similar facilities, functions and programming, preferably serving populations of 100,000 or more. A combination of experience and education may be considered.
